My wife and I, along with another couple, visited the FS Costa Rica last August (we are all mid 30’s). First off, the service is the best I've ever experienced. The staff is extremely nice and accommodating. I don’t think “no” is in their vocabulary. We are pretty low maintenance, but they seemed to serve every request from all guests. They always remember your name which was impressive.
The room was very nice and clean. We stayed in one of the 1 BR suites with the separate covered patio. The views of the ocean and plant life were good (rainy/green season). Not great, but CR isn’t like a typical Hawaiian destination.
The private drive leading to the property is unbelievably beautiful. The views are incredible.
The architecture of the lobby, restaurants, rooms, spa, etc was spectacular to look at. If you are there to relax (I assume you are!), take the time to look at it in detail.
We went on the golf course tour. If you want to get some great pictures, I highly recommend it.
The food was excellent. We ate at every restaurant except the Italian one (forgot the name). We especially liked the Brazilian "meat fest". Come hungry because you will have the opportunity to sample 12 different types of grilled meat (beef, fish, lamb, pork). The ceviche bar was very good as well. Overall, it was a fun and delicious dining experience. The restaurant at the golf course was also very good and beautiful. Another recommendation, have a pitcher of sangrias delivered to your room. It’s a great way to enjoy the view from your balcony. Room service was always prompt which we used often.
There are tons of activities to take advantage of. One of them was the canopy tour. All I can say is unbelievable. This is probably the closest you will ever get to experiencing human flight. Martin, our guide, was way cool. He was very knowledgeable about CR, the people, the land, the govt, etc. We learned more from him in two hours than we did on our six day visit.
Being the rainy season, we experienced a decent amount of it. The rain was never an issue nor was the heat and humidity. It is simply a part of the experience which I came to enjoy. The rain showers were quite sporadic. Instead of seeking shelter, I found myself sitting or walking in the rain quite often. It never lasted very long and was always refreshing.
The spa was very nice. The “cool” pool was great. Transitioning from the hot pool to the cool pool felt exhilarating and cleansing. Be prepared to dip into water that is 50ish degrees.
We toured the vacation homes which you can purchase (full or partial). They are beautiful. Similar look and feel as our 1 BR suite only larger.
If you rent a car, obey the speed limit everywhere, especially on the property. The first time behind the wheel in CR, I didn’t even make it 2 km before getting pulled over by two “gentlemen” on a dirt motorcycle brandishing semi-automatic weapons. Apparently, the speed limit is 35 km and I was going 39 km. I pleaded “dumb Californian” and was let go with a warning. It simply reminded me that I was there to “slow down”. Not just when it came to driving, but life itself while in CR.
Needless to say, we all enjoyed our Costa Rican vacation. I could not imagine doing it without the Four Seasons as our place of comfort. If you come, be prepared for heat and humidity. If you enjoy this type of climate or have an open mind to experience and enjoy Costa Rica for what it is, this place is for you. Definitely not a “Hawaii” destination. Somewhat pricey, but for what you get in your room, food, service and experience, it is worth it.
In closing, since you are on vacation, have a shot of Guaro. It is CR’s most popular liquor made of sugar cane. Typically, it is used as a mixer, but a shot never hurt anyone! And, no doubt, it will enrich your Costa Rican experience!
We will be back this August.
