“Amazing resort!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2009

My husband and I have stayed at quite a few Four Seasons Resorts and this is by far the best. The room was very comfortable and the staff was the friendliest we have encountered. I recommend the bamboo massage. We hired a private tour guide, Mainor Lara (www.tours-your-way.com) who was incredible. He does airport transfers and tours. Mainor took us on fantastic day trips, including to Granada, Nicaragua. He is an expert (third generation Costa Rican) and took us on a private snorkeling tour with caves which was outstanding. The best part of using Mainor's services was that we were able to design our own adventure. We told him what we like to do and took care of everything. And, his fees were 1/2 of what the Four Seasons Resort would charge. Mainor made our trip so memorable and we HIGHLY recommend him. (P.S. We heard about Mainor from Trip Advisor!!)

Having stayed at many luxury resorts (including 17 other Four Seasons) with my family over the past decade, I can honestly say this was our best overall experience (Four Seasons Hualalai is a close 2nd). The location of the hotel is incredible with a beach on both sides of the peninsula. The views of the bay and the surrounding mountains and green jungle are beautiful. However, location and facilities will not alone make for a great experience, especially when paying the prices of a Four Seasons. The staff has been trained extremely well and seem to genuinely take interest in wanting to help you. They remembered us by name every day, where we like to sit, and what we liked to drink, etc. Very nice touch. We were also impressed with the dining options. Often times resorts have 1 or 2 restaurants that seem to be OK, but we enjoyed all of the restaurants here. We decided on one of the canopy rooms with a plunge pool. Absolutely worth the extra money. Ask for one on the bay side, the view is a lot better than the Pacific side. Another tip. The Papagayo Peninsula has a Beach Club located 5 minutes from the hotel. As a guest you can use this Club too. Great change of scenery, not crowded at all, waves are a little bigger for my teenagers to play in, and the pool is beautiful. Sports bar there is a great place for lunch and their restaurant and sushi bar for dinner were also excellent. You can charge everything back to your room, and their prices (including drinks by the pool, etc.) were cheaper than the Four Seasons.
If you have the chance to go, DO IT.

We just spent five nights at the Four Seasons and had an amazing stay. The service was truly top notch and the entire staff was extremely friendly. Whenever you want to lay out by the beach or pool, there is somebody there to set you up with your towels and drinks or whatever else you may need. They also have plenty of sunscreen and bug spray on the beaches and at the pool in case you forget to bring some. There were plenty of free activities to participate in at the beach. We rented some kayaks one morning and paddled around the bay. We also snorkled right off the beach and saw some great tropical fish. The reef was more of a rock reef than a coral reef, but still lots of fish and tour groups were coming by boats to this area, so we knew it must be one of the better locations. We booked a private tour with Mainor at tours-your-way.com. He was great. Picked us up at the hotel and took us to the Rincon de la Vieja volcano. Great hike, swimming in a waterfall, then lunch. Afterwards he took us in town to pick up some things from the market and to a souvenir shop. We also booked a tour to Witch's Rock for some zip lining. It was a blast! Our second morning while we were at the beach, a boat captain came up to us and asked if we were interested in taking a boat tour to Coco Beach (across the bay). We rounded up some of our friends and decided to go. He charged us $50/couple and drove us over. He took us around the town and recommended a place for lunch. Overall, we didn't think too much of Coco Beach. It's very touristy and the beach is rather undesirable. But it was nice to get away and see something else and the boat ride back was really nice. He drove us around the coast and near some islands. It was well worth it. The food at the hotel was of course pricey, but it was really good. We enjoyed every meal we ate there. We did the Brazilian dinner at Congo's and ate at Di Mare and had some delicious pastas. The Brazilian dinner included a salad bar, dessert bar, and an awesome ceviche bar. We tried the Beach Club down the road one day. It's a nice change. It was a five minute car ride and the service level is high there too. We ate lunch and had some drinks. The prices may seem a bit cheaper but we noticed that the sevice fee was higher than at the Four Seasons, so I think in the end the prices are about the same. They had some nice infinity pools and a black sand beach. The room we stayed in was in building 4000 on the 4th floor. We had an obstructed view of the bay, but it was still so relaxing leaving the door open and listening to the waves. You will also experience the not so pleasant sound of the howler monkeys. We could see them from our room one evening and they are so much smaller than the noise they make. It's just all part of being a part of the jungle. We loved it. My husband and his friends played golf one day. They all said it was the best course they have ever played. The pictures I saw were amazing. While they golfed, the girls hit the spa and I did the aromatherapy massage. It was great. Probably the best massage I've ever had. Overall it was a fantastic trip. The hotel is isolated, but we liked that and still did a few tours that allowed us to explore the country. We wish we had extended our trip longer as we did not want to leave!

After a series of disappointing trips to luxury hotels I was nervous that I had become a "difficult guest" with expectations that were unrealistic. The FSH Costa Rica put that to rest! They restored my confidence in luxury hotels! From the moment we were greeted all was perfect! The car door opened and my 6 yaer old son was met with a bright smile and receptionist said "Witt, we've been waiting for you!" and gave him a stuffed animal and treat to chose from. Checkin and luggage was quick and efficient. All the rooms are basically the same with the only difefrence being what level you are located on.

The room was spacious- loved the huge screened balcony with sitting area.

We overpacked as usual! Next time (and we do plan on returning), we'll bring fewer clothes and take advantage of the spacious, clean complementary washer/ dryers located on each hotel floor.

We discovered the adjacent beach club that is affiliated with the hotel. Free shuttle service (less that 5 minutes- don't walk it as it's all uphill on way home!) Excellent casual dining and fine dining- bit less expensive than than FSH.

Kids Club was one of the finest we've ever experienced at any FS or Ritz carlton. They had their own private pool, excellent staff/ counselors. Our son asked to go back each day!

Spa was beautiful and traetments excellent

My husband and I stayed at the Four Seasons for 6 glorious days and I have to say this hotel far exceeded our expectations. The location is beautiful, the staff unbeatable, and there is so much to do! I was worried that we would be a bit bored- ha,ha- not a chance at this resort! The food was great. We particularly loved the brazilian bbq, although the Italian restaurant was also fabulous. Meals were a bit pricey, but it is a Four Seasons Resort, so that is to be expected. The staff was one of the best we have ever encountered- if you needed anything they were there to get it for you and pleased to do so! It was a rude awakening to come home!
The spa was a wonderful part of our trip. Just thinking about it makes me want to
return...
We did several activities off site that took between an hour and a half and two hours to get to. This property is pretty isolated, but not so far that you can't go see more of Costa Rica.

My husband and I have never been so impressed with a resort, location, and its staff. Everything was perfect. We ate the best fresh fish at Papagayo restaurant! We swam in the beautiful waters, walked on the beaches, went on 2 kayak tours, ate the best lunches-the popcorn shrimp served over real popcorn are a treat! We also went to the spa and had a couples massage-Ann Karol is terrific, I highly recommend the rainforest aromatherapy massage. I also had the Rejuvenation Treatment with body scrub, wrap and massage, my skin has never felt better. One day my husband chartered a boat that took him to Witch's Rock and Ollie's Point, they picked him up right at the hotel on the beach. Renting a boat is much faster and more stress free than going by car which can take hours. We recommend Secret Spot CR charters for the surf excursion. We loved the Playa Prieta Beach Club as well, located a few minutes drive from Four Seasons Hotel on Peninsula Papagayo. The 3 minutes spent in the car is well worth the reward of finding the quiet and ultra-friendly people at Playa Prieta.

Our family of four stayed at this beautiful property for around a week. We've stayed at many Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton properties and can honestly say that the service and friendliness of the staff was some of the best! My husband and son played golf several times and my daughter and I took the golf course tour. It has magnificent views and some that rival those of the golf course at the Nevis Four Seasons and the White Witch in Jamaica. The food at the resort was very good and at a price point you would expect from a resort of this quality. They could easily have charged more, given that you have to drive almost an hour to get to a restaurant. The beds were wonderfully comfortable and the rooms have great screened in balconies. We had great sport massages and enjoyed the kayaking and ocean trampoline. The only negative comment is that you need to understand you're really going to a resort that is part of the jungle. We loved seeing the iguanas, crabs and white-faced monkeys, but didn't love the bugs (the pool-side kiosks even offer mosquito spray). It probably would've been unbearable to sit on the porch without the screen. We left the resort for two excursions with Mainor from www.tours-your-way.com. Not only was he responsive and reliable, but also he was a pleasure to spend the day with. He took care of our airport transfers and took us to ziplining and to the hot springs at Borinquen. We had a great day and he even found some howler monkeys to communicate with. He also arranged a great 1/2 day fishing trip where we caught mahi-mahi and a 30 pound wahoo. Overall, it was a great trip. Just remember ... you are going to the jungle (not a white-sand Carribean-like beach resort)!
