“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

We stayed here for 5 nights in late Jan. The hotel is designed to fit in with the area. It is elegant and casual at the same time. The spa is beautiful and the messages we received were as good as we have had anywhere. The only downside is that you are isolated and other than a restaurant at the beach club all your meals are at the hotel. We enjoyed Di Mare for dinner including the chefs dinner for our anniversary. The head chef is charming and if you enjoy cooking you will love watching the kitchen preparing the meals. We thought the steakhouse at the golf club was a nice evening but if you are used to the prime beef we get here then you will have to lower your expectations to be happy. The breakfast buffet is wonderful with different dishes daily as well as the omelet and pancake stations.

The staff make this one of the best properties we have visited. From the head concierge Sara to the guest relations manager they all great.

We did a Sea Bird snorkel trip that we enjoyed but the snorkeling in the area was not great.

Room Tip: We liked the building close to the main lobby

What an incredible location - the resort is gorgeous and the staff was superb! We were there as a couple but want to return with the entire family. A great destination that would work for couples or families - that's not an easy feat! Two beaches to choose from and a beautiful pool - the restaurants were great! We didn't use the spa facilities but our friends did and they raved. From the moment we arrived we were pampered and spoiled and never wanted to leave. The concierge desk was wonderful at setting up any of our activities - golf, zip lining, and tours.

Room Tip: We upgraded to a bungalow and it was lovely! Monkeys right off our balcony!

A fantastic place for a honeymoon! We highly recommend the sunset catamarran cruise and chef's special dinner. The service, food, activities, amenities and facilities were spectacular! Even the most basic room is worth the trip. This is also a great place for families, with the highest level of service and thoughtfulness for parents with small children and teens. All of the employees we met at the resort were genuinely pleased to meet and assist us!

This is a wonderful property in a beautiful setting. The Resort handles everything including transportation from and back to the new, modern and clean airport in Liberia which should be arranged when booking. Diverse activities are offered on the property, but reserve early as space is limited. Ask for a monthly schedule when booking the room and plan accordingly. Off-property sightseeing excursions are handled through the Concierge using one company exclusively and although somewhat expensive, probably worth the convenience, surety, and safety. Unfortunately, if a minimum number of participants is not reached, the tour may be cancelled and the on-site activity already filled for that day.
Many restaurants are available at the resort or by quick and complimentary shuttle to the nearby beach and golf clubs within the property. Food is excellent everywhere; try the macademia encrusted sea bass at DeMare or the "Crab Brulee" appetizer in Prieta, but expect to pay Four Season prices.
Great service and friendly staff contributed to this glorious escape from winter. Will definitely return.

As very regular Four Seasons guests, we had high expectations for our experience and staff and were not disappointed. Unfortunately while we were there, the resort had a major facilities incident which knocked out air conditioning for most of the rooms. It was an unfortunate incident that was out of their control and what was so impressive was how quickly and effectively the entire staff responded. Fleets of workers jumped on the repair work while the rest of the staff did everything they could to make guests comfortable. For some people and certain rooms, the loss of air conditioning was not a major issue. For those of us from Alaska, it was a big deal. The hotel quickly moved us to a room which did have A/C, and Marco Zeffiro, the Front Desk Manager we dealt with, was just terrific in making sure we left as happy as possible. We lost a very valuable half day of our short vacation due to the incident but still, because of Mr. Zeffiro's sensitive and fair handling of our situation, we would like to return. As always, even in desperate times, the Four Seasons responded the way you would expect. All of the staff were lovely and gracious during our entire stay and as they always do, really made the difference between a four star and a five-star experience.

Room Tip: We chose a fairly basic room and it was STILL fantastic! They actually put something like a mattres...

Four Seasons resorts never disappoint, and this resort is no exception. The quality of the rooms and service is unparalleled. The thing I like best about this brand, though, is their uncanny ability to create an uncrowded feel even when the resort is at high occupancy.

Location: If you book here, you need to know that this resort is not near ANYTHING (except gorgeous beaches, views, and a world-class golf course). It is about 40 minutes away from the airport in Liberia, and is about 1.5-2 hours from the nearest tourist attractions. It is located on an unbelievably beautiful peninsula in a tropical dry forest. It is hotter and drier up there (low 90's when the more inland capital of San Jose is in the low 80's). There are monkeys, iguanas, and coatis on the property, but you won't see any of the other typical Costa Rican wildlife such as sloths, poison dart frogs, toucans, and parrots. The nearest rain forest is about 2 hours away, and to get to the Monteverde Cloud forest or Arenal volcano it is 4 hours. Fortunately, there are plenty of things to do on the resort property.

Food: The food is wonderful...but, as is typical of Four Seasons, very expensive. For example, the fruit platter that comes with a banana bread slice is $17. Entrees at the restaurants tended to be priced at $26-$40 with side dishes and salads not included. The breakfast buffet is $33, and you really can't piece together a normal breakfast a la carte for much less than that. There are a good variety of restaurants on the property, and number about 5-6 total. Each of them has a unique menu with both innovative and classic choices. There is a restaurant (Papagayo's) which features Costa Rican cuisine and is quite fun. Congo's restaurant offers Brazilian-style tableside meat service for dinner, and even at $58 per person is worth it. The beverages throughout the resort were surprisingly more mainstream in price, and the alcoholic drinks were made strong. The resort will gladly put a small refrigerator in your room for no charge--get one and ask your airport transportation or tour guides to make a stop at a mini-mart.

Rooms: Wow. This was the most spectacular hotel room we have ever had, and we've stayed at some amazing places around the world. We booked through American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, which includes as one perk a one-category room upgrade if available at check-in. I booked a Canopy Suite for all but the first night, as we were to arrive quite late. That night I booked the lowest level room at the resort. When we checked in, we were taken to a Canopy Suite with a plunge pool. This constituted a four category upgrade for that first night and really knocked my socks off. The room was private, huge, luxuriously appointed, and had the best ocean view I've ever encountered. My 8-year old daughter was given a stuffed turtle, two bath toys, a gift bag of 3 children's toiletries, a princess toothbrush, a large tube of children's toothpaste, a cookie made to look like a turtle on a coconut beach (with gummy bears), and her name spelled out in stickers on the shower. The walk up to the suites was steep in parts but not bad, and if you prefer, the bellmen will drive you up or down in a cart. While I can't speak directly about the non-suite rooms in the main portion of the resort, I could see that they are arranged cheek to jowl in buildings containing about 30 rooms. The building next to the pool is really close to the pool--which might be a plus for some families but I would have not cared for.

Service: It is pretty typical of the Four Seasons brand. The staff is friendly and interested in making guests happy (ok, some staff more than others). Housekeeping was very detail oriented. We got a kick out of seeing all the stuff they would do, such as making sure to straighten out my book light so that it was in a perfect line on the bedside table. There is a turndown service in the evening during which the towels would be replaced, the lighting adjusted, the ice bucket filled, and the beds turned down. We were most appreciative that the service in the restaurants was not the typical Latin American slow service that turns every meal into a 2 hour ordeal.

Best thing ever: There are guest washing machines and dryers with laundry soap nearby to all rooms. They are free to use as much as you like.

Tours/Activities/Transportation: The resort will book all of these things for you, and probably do an amazing job. However, we chose to use Tours Your Way (Mainor Lara) after reading several positive recommendations on this resort's TripAdvisor reviews. If you use him, you will pay about half of what the resort charges for the same thing, and you will have a private tour. Through him, our transportation from the airport to the resort was $80 each way--much, much cheaper than the Four Seasons transportation. We did the following tours with him: Mega Combo (zipline, hotsprings, horseback ride, waterslide), Palo Verde boat tour, and a day trip to Nicaraugua. The resort offers a free golf cart tour of the golf course, titled Trail of Giants. It lasts an hour and you get to drive your own cart. This was really fun and the golf course is spectacular (high praise from this non-golfer) and you will see lots of animals. The water activities offered by the resort are varied, and include snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboards. While the paddleboards are free, the resort only has two of them (!) so I recommend you get there early.

Pools: There are four pools, including an adults-only pool and a children's-only pool (at the Kids for All Seasons program). The other two pools are large and have plenty of lounge chairs. The attendants set up the chairs with towels, bring water and little treats periodically, clean your sunglasses, and spritz your face with Evian. They are very good about coming around frequently for drink and food orders, and are very prompt in delivering the drinks cold and the food hot.

Spa: This is a really comfortable spa. I got the best massage of my life here. While not the most visually stunning spa I've ever visited, it is the one in which I felt the most comfortable and catered to.

Kids Activities: there is a Kids For All Seasons program which runs from 8am to 5pm. They also have teen activities in the evening. It is free of charge, well staffed, and there are varying activities throughout the day. This hotel goes out of its way to cater to children. One restaurant (Di Mare) took my daughter on a tour of the kitchen. She got to make her own brownie desert with the pastry chef. Another restaurant (Caracol) gave her a huge bag of toys at the end of the meal. All of the restaurants bring the child's meal out very fast, often before the adult's appetizers arrive.

Sleep quality: the beds and the linens are very high quality without sags in the mattress or rickety jiggley supports that transmit your spouse's every move.

Room Tip: Rooms in the building next to the main pool are really close to the pool. The lounge chairs are abo...

Rooms: they're huge with large patios and I think all of them have ocean views. You're also so close to the ocean you get to hear the waves crashing from your room! Great way to wake up & fall asleep to! We had our own pool and facing the ocean.

Food: Restaurants and room service were all delicious! Yes a bit overpriced, but when you're staying at the Four Seasons you expect it to be, but at least portions are big so you can split entrees and still feel pretty full.
Beaches: Having 2 beaches was great! The ocean side was perfect to lay out or swim in without any boats obstructing the beautiful view. The gulf side had all the water sports which are free for hotel guests: paddle boarding, paddle boating, and kayaking! They also have sunset kayak or snorkel tours!
Golf: Unfortunately we don't play gulf, but this was ranked one of the best golf resorts in Costa Rica.
Wifi: Pay for it or use the computers at the business center for free. Doing the latter forces you to truly spend your time relaxing instead of being on your iphone =)
The fitness rooms were great!

There isn't much of a hiking path if you want to explore the property, you run on the road that the cars are on. We got to the closest lookout point and then found a wooden staircase wrapping around all the way to the beach.
