““Wonderful Visit!””
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

Just came back from our vacation at the Hilton Papagayo, it was absolutely amazing, very different than other resorts we have stayed before. The resort is beautiful and clean. The rooms were comfortable and we had an amazing view of both the wildlife and the beach. There are a few hiking trails and the resort spans over a wide spread area where every person has some sort of amazing view. The hotel staff and service was also incredible with assisting us with every request we had. We did three tours during our stay, we booked with Easy tours and transfers Guanacaste and we really had a blast!!! These guys are amazing.... ask for Edwin or Diego! Our trip from the airport was amazing, we where picked up in an air conditioned van (not a large bus). We where the only people in the van, our driver Edwin gave us a great tour on our way to the Hilton. What a nice way to start a great week. I have no complaints about this resort and we plan on visiting again as soon as we have a chance! I highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed, WE LOVED IT!!!!!!!

I am a Hilton Diamond member and therefor did not consider other resorts for our trip - that was a mistake. In hindsight, the food and service is probably fair for the money, but it was less than we were looking for. They have a reservation policy with the restaraunts that basically serves as their cost control - to make sure they don't serve too many "nice" meals in one night. The wine list offered 8 wines...they were out of 6 of them and told us we had ordered the "last bottle" of the 7th selection? On several occasions I laid by the pool for hours without a single server stopping by. The main pool was great, but children are welcome there. The spa pool is kid-free, but it was dirty (literally) and boring. The spa was very nice. We stayed in an ocean view bungalow and the view was beautiful and room was very nice...no complaints there. If you are looking for an affordable trip and are not overly particular with food, this is a good choice. If you are looking for premium food and service, do not choose this location.

DEFINITELY check the season...we went at the end of the dry season and it looked more like a desert than any tropical destination. The grounds of the hotel wer nicely kep and green, but the general area wasn't that pretty.

Room Tip: Ocean view was the way to go. Especially since we went in the dry season...

Thank you for writing a review about your recent stay at our hotel.

I am sorry that the food and the service received didn’t live up to your expectations. Your comments about the dirty pool in the Spa area have been brought to the Maintenance Manager attention as we consider them improvement opportunities to seek excellence.

Our restaurants reservation policy have nothing to be involved with our cost control. I would like to highlight that we are a one of a kind All-Inclusive Resort … without the need of no limits on the amount of times you can enjoy a la carte restaurants and personalized service with reservation requested.

Despite your comments, I am glad to know you found the main pool, the spa and the view from your room to your liking. On your next visit to our area, I hope you will give us another opportunity to provide you with the excellent food, service and hospitality we are known for.

Sincerely,

We went to the Hilton Papagayo from April 16 to 26, 2013 for some rest, relaxation and sun. It was the ending of the dry season so everything around the resort was brown. We stayed in a bungalow near the spa and the spa pool. It was quiet and restful. The bungalow was not far from the spa pool and faced the gulf so we could hear the gentle waves as they splashed on the beach. The bungalow was pleasant and the bed was comfortable. The TV even had a few channels in English so we could keep up with the news. Most of the staff spoke English so we never really had a language problem. There is a room safe to keep valuables and the furniture was typical hotel stuff but ok. The small refrigerator was stocked every day with a couple of beers, some soda and a bottle of water. There were also packets of coffee to make fresh Costa Rican coffee in the am. The room as generally clean and the air conditioning worked fine. Although they mopped the floor every day, they didn't always get in the corners and behind the toilet. The fixtures were old and a bit worn. They should be replaced.
The staff was generally wonderful, pleasant and welcoming. It was hot outside (generally in the 90+ Fahrenheit and we often took two showers a day. The bed was made every day and a towel-animal was placed on the bed. There were two wash bowls and a huge mirror. Shaving was easy and there was always plenty of hot water.

FOOD: Breakfasts were at the restaurant (El Chescha?) by the main pool. The breakfasts were wonderful. Omelets were made to order and there were scrambled eggs every day. Lots of bacon, sausages, potatoes and usually a Costa Rican specialty like beans and rice or baked honeyed plantains. There was lots of fruit including sweet mangoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and whole fruit like apples and bananas. The coffee was Costa Rican and superb. There were small pastries to finish off a great breakfast. At night the breakfast restaurant was also the buffet which was also very good.
The El Diablo (? not sure of name) restaurant was very good, especially the fish. Steak is not good in Costa Rica because it is not very thick and is not very marbled with fat. Vegetables were plentiful and good. The Restaurant by the spa specializes in Italian fare and it is ok but not outstanding. The El Bocadillo (?) restaurant by the spa is also ok but I had a steak there and it wasn't very good. Overall, the food is good but not outstanding except for the breakfasts. The liquor does not seem very strong and I suspect it may be watered. There a lots of fruit drinks including the Howler Monkey and the Sunset Papagayo Gulf.
TOURS: The Divers group at the resort was very friendly. A young lady there, Grace, was simply charming. She even brought us some cashew fruit after telling us about it the day before. She went out of her way to get it for us and it was so very thoughtful. It was the highlight of our stay. We took the Wednesday afternoon sunset cruise on the sailboat out into the Pacific, out of the Gulf, and it was terrific and worth every penny. Dolphins swam along side the sailboat, we saw Monkey (King Kong) rock, and we experience a gorgeous sunset. It was delightful. We also took an ISSYS tour to Arenal but that is a separate review.
OVERALL: Overall it was a pleasant experience but it is not the 6 gold apples that Apples Tours says it is. It was generally easy to get a shuttle to get around the resort. It does have lots of birds, lizards, a few monkeys, cats and raccoons that begged near the open restaurants.
Wear sunscreen as the sun will burn as it is more intense in this area of the world. Also, bring water shoes as the beach is black sand and gets very hot during the day. If you want to be constantly pampered, go to the Riu Palace where they constantly ask if they can do something for you according to a couple we met at the Hilton. We don't care for that and the Hilton gave us the R and R we needed. It is an ok resort but not a luxury resort.

Room Tip: The rooms near the spa were quiet and restful and near the spa pool and a small beach. The rooms in...

Overall this hotel is not bad. While it could use some repairs/updating it was very nice and not nearly as bad as many of the reviews make it out to be. The beach at the hotel was amazing and there were never too many people on it. It isn't dirty like some reviews say, the sand is just black. We also thought the service was very good and everyone working there was very friendly. Our biggest complaint would have to be the food. Nothing tasted amazing and at one point I got food poisoning from eating there. We had issues all week with receiving under cooked food (I don't mind steaks that are rare so when I think it's undercooked it is pretty bad). Overall the facilities at the hotel were very nice but the low quality of the food made the price of the hotel too expensive. I would only stay there again if I didn't have to pay for the all-inclusive meals.

We stayed April 28-May 3rd. They had several restaurants and they were all great. Didn't matter which one you went to the food was five start quality. The staff was happy and gracious to get you anything you needed and anticipated what you might ask for and say "con mucho gusto". Wonderful drinks at the bar.

We had an ocean front room in the 400's. It was quiet and far away from the main area. You have to walk to get to and from the main areas; however, if you wait a minute a open air shuttle will be around to get you. Never a problem. Sometimes the walk was nice and helped you get ready for another afternoon of lounging. Slept great. Mini bar with bottled water, diet cola and beet. They had activities every day there were well planned and short and sweet.

I especially liked the Spa vida and went twice during my stay. I am a very experienced spa goer and the spa here was clean, beautiful and the waiting area was stocked with water, tea, apples and a beautiful view of the sea. After a couples massage there was champagne waiting for us with a sweet thank you note.

Only critiques I have are that the rooms need more hook for towels and wet swimsuits.

We will be back for a another romantic getaway and even our four year old would enjoy.

Room Tip: We liked the rooms far away from the main area for tranquility. However some people have said here y...

This resort is beautiful! We spent the past week at the Hilton Papagayo and had an amazing experience! The location is great! You are in a private bay with a gorgeous view! Others who have written reviews complain about the dark sand on the beach...while this is true and the sand is not your typical colour...its because of the volcanic activity around the country...the sand is this colour for a reason...if u want to complain about the colour go elsewhere..the beach is great here and u can walk for miles. The room is very comfortable as well..your on vacation so you shudnt be spending much time in the room but its great non the less. What i found amazing were the shuttles that would bring you around the resort! They pick you up from any location and bring you whereever it is you want to go. If you dont like to walk use the shuttles...during my stay i heard several complaints about the size of the resort and the need to use shuttles. If you dont like big resorts find another place to go...if u dont like the shuttles-walk. This resort is on a mountain, people have the opportunity to experience soo much nature and cant find Anything better to do than complain. The shuttle drivers are beautiful...always helpful and ready to take you anywhere! They even ask if you want to see monkies or iguanas ans cut down coconuts for you to drink the milk. Kindness is key. Hulio made my stay the most memorable, as he brought me to the best location in the resort to watch the sunset! The staff is wonderful and always polite, and speak english very well. The food is incredible...definitely some of the best food ive ever had at an all inclusive resort. For those to complain about the smallest detail-stay home! I would return 100% to this resort!

We travel a lot and stay in a lot of different hotels and never write reviews. But future travelers just stay away from this place unless your looking for a 1 star hotel. Just that simple. The spa was great, my only positive experience there. But that should not be the reason to spend 8 nights at a hotel.

Thank you for your review.

I am so glad you were able to experience our authentic Vida Spa.

I would like to apologize if your stay at the Hilton Papagayo were less than expected.

We hope that you will continue to use Hilton properties and your experience is not the determining factor in your choice of hotels.

Sincerely,
