We booked 3 excursions through Issys and had a mixed experience.
Borinquen Safari - excellent. Horseback riding, then zip lining, then lunch, then mud baths from natural hot springs. The key here, though, was our tour guide - DIEGO was amazing. We really couldn't have asked for a better tour guide. His English was very impressive, and he bent over backwards to make us happy. 5 stars.
Tenorio River Rafting - mixed. We enjoyed most of the time there. But the time that was bad was very bad. Each raft has 4 tourists + 1 guide. Our guide intentionally flipped our boat over on the 12-foot drop. He thought he was being cute/funny. For 2 of the tourists in our raft, that was fine. They were unharmed. For the other 2, we each got one giant painful bruise on our left knees. We also got stuck under the raft, which is/was a very scary experience. I was taking in water and trying (unsuccessfully) to lift the boat over my head before my life vest carried me up to the middle of the flipped over boat where I could get a breath before swimming out from under the raft. All of this with a river current. Pretty scary for less than a minute. And I am not happy about having a banged up knee. Otherwise, it was good. We saw a few monkeys, iguanas, and a giant frog/toad. The lunch was good, typical Costa Rican food - get the tilapia, it was better than the chicken. 2 stars.
Fishing - this was really disappointing. My dad is really into fishing, and he had been looking forward to it for months. The boat left at 1:30pm. The guides (there were 2 of them) didn't speak much English, but luckily my Spanish is pretty good after years of studying. One of the guides told me that fishing in the morning is very fruitful, but in the afternoon is terrible. He was right. The guides did not come with bait, so we fished for bait. We didn't catch any. We found another boat that had caught some, this one with professional fishermen, that had caught some bait. They gave us a few of their bait fish in exchange for beer. We fished with those, but we never caught one fish. No one ever even got a bite. So, it wasn't really fishing. It was more like an expensive boat ride. Huge disappointment. 1 star.
