“A very special place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

My wife and I have been going on beach vacations for 40 years, all over the world, and we've never enjoyed a resort more than this. We look for small, quiet, boutique hotels directly on a beach with good ocean swimming. We stayed for 4 nights and wish we could have stayed longer. We were there the week after the Christmas/new year holiday so there weren't many other guests, mostly young couples. Ian, the manager, was terrific and Felipe at the reception desk and Charles at the bar and the entire staff are very friendly and anxious to please. The setting is on a very pretty, miles long beach with more palm trees than people. No crowds in sight. The grounds are beautiful and constantly being groomed, swept and cleaned. There are 9, identical, free standing 2 story villas, offered as either 2 or 3 bedroom apts. with large rooms, a full kitchen and a tv in the living room perfect for families or 2 or 3 couples, or a very spacious, beautiful bedroom suite upstairs for 1 couple with a small refrigerator and microwave but no tv. The large decks overlook the ocean which is just a few feet from the villas. In front of the villas is a small pool, but it is big enough to swim in, and there is a small bar between the pool and the ocean. Everything is very luxurious, but because it is such a small resort there are certain limitations that one might otherwise look for in a luxury resort. They don't have a wide selection of wines and the restaurant menu is very limited. We ate lunch and 1 dinner here and the food was ok, though to be fair its hard to pass judgement having eaten so few meals there. There are several other small resorts within an easy walk and we ate breakfasts and dinners in the other places too and thought the food selection and ambiance were better off the property. The town of Hopkins is about a mile away down a dirt road, and there are several local type restaurants that others told us were very good. The town is a small fishing village, not a resort town, so it is authentic central american, in other words, it is a charming atmosphere but the people are poor and live in shacks, there are small grocery stores but no supermarkets, banks or tourist shops. So if that bothers you do not go into town. But if you don't go you will be missing a great experience. We walk every day and walked into town and on the road in the opposite direction and we met the most wonderful friendly people. There are kayaks and bicycles available and there are several fun excursions to go on, both on land, e.g. Mayan ruins, jungle hikes and cave experiences and on the ocean, snorkeling and diving, otherwise there is nothing to "do". I usually don't write such long detailed reviews but we loved this place and if it's the kind of vacation you're looking for you can't beat it.

Wonderful staff. It was low season when we were there with our 1 yr. old grandson. It was great, everyone made us feel at home. The villa was lovely. We had the entire downstairs and enjoyed the layout. Kitchen! Right on the beach! Stormy in October but sun in between. Snorkeling trip delightful. Trip to the ruins not to be missed. Food delicious. Bar and kitchen staff felt like friends forever. Very pleasant people and place. They had an infant life preserver for us as well as high chair at our table for every meal.

Our trip began when we arrive in Belize City too late to make the Maya Island flight (because a lot of the small town runways don’t have lights, you can only fly during the day). We hired a driver to take us to Hopkins for $180 USD. After contacting the resort with our new travel plans, we coordinated a meeting with Ian in Dangriga vs. the taxi going all the way to Hopkins on the dirt roads. Although dark, The drive was quite pleasant and uneventful (2.5 hours). We met Ian in Dangriga and he drove us to Belizean Dreams. The resort was very well maintained with good landscaping. Our room was nice and we had floral turndown on our first night. The staff: Ian, Rafael, Franco, George, Doc Como (bar), Arnold, Edso, Ramon, Bernardo, Phillipi, housekeeping, grounds, etc did a wonderful job! The room was very nice with local furniture, right on the beach with ocean views. The choices at breakfast, lunch and dinner were more than sufficient and we had excellent food and wine. The first day we walked the beach into town (1.5 mi) and stopped in town at a local bar for a drink, went to the grocery (to review prices although we didn’t buy anything) and then walked the road back to the resort. The next day we went to the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins which I would highly recommend. Day 3 was spent lounging on the beach (where we did see manatees eating the grasses off our beach). Day 4 we went cave tubing and zip lining which was also a lot of fun. Finally, on the last day we checked out the local spa just down the road (but they were booked) and then took our golf cart into town. We toured Hopkins Bay which was too large for our tastes. In the “downtown” area, we stumbled upon Driftwood Pizza and stayed here all day. Driftwood Pizza is a great local beach bar and pizza place (and a must do on your visit)—we enjoyed the beach here better than the resort and the pizza and drinks were great and a very good value (2 med pizza/drinks all day $40). The resort pool was also nice, although a little chilly. The resort could do some things better including hiring a larger staff to work the meals, bar and pool area (moving chairs etc). The rooms, although nice could have used nicer shower heads and a light down blanket (vs. what was offered was just a sheet and light woven blanket + extra very scratchy acrylic blanket if desired). We had an upper unit and the lower unit connected via a stairway/interior door so if housekeeping was in the lower level or the guests below were using the kitchen in the morning, we could hear them. We enjoyed our time here and the people, with a little more focus on the details, this would be an excellent resort.

Room Tip: a room on the beach, upper or lower is in a shared villa

Hopkins is a beautiful local small beach town that is very warm and welcoming to visitors. The staff was very catering and professional. The restaurant was delicious and private. LOVED everything about this hotel and area.

I had the most amazing time at Belizean Dreams. After the first few moments, it really felt like home, so hard to leave in the end. My villa was large and always incredibly clean. The food was A++ and so were the drinks. The staff were the friendliest, most amazing people I've ever met. I definitely recommend this resort. The tours are amazing! I recommend for you to purchase the package with tours included. The guides will take you everywhere and show you absolutely everything. Don't forget to include a few days to be lazy and lay on the beach... listen to some reggae and lay in the sun. It's well worth every penny

Room Tip: The villas on the beach are the most amazing but not the quietest. My villa was towards the back of...

The most relaxing, exciting, authentic holiday vacation I've ever had. We were promptly welcomed at the airport by the Belizean Dreams' driver and jostled through Dangriga on our way to Hopkins. We were greeted as we got out of the van and the staff seamlessly whisked our baggage and us to our villa and a welcome drink. Dinner awaited us at a table by the pool. Sweet potato soup, lobster, pesto chicken-all delicious. Did I mention the incredibly attentive staff? Nicest, smiling people I've ever met!

You could tell the gorgeous stone tiles in our villa were handmade by the occasional dog or hand imprint. The sheets were crisp and clean, the kitchen well appointed, the air conditioners were appreciated during the hot afternoons. Ian planned our excursions, transported us and went out of his way to make sure we received the best treatment everywhere we went.

The Belizean Dreams staff went above and beyond to make our visit individually personal and memorable. A huge coconut fell while we were eating dinner and our kids had never experienced that before! Our daughter named it Lucille and she stayed with us the whole trip! To our delight, the staff picked 4 more coconuts, macheted off the tops and stuck in a straw. That's about as fresh as you can get! Chef Reynaldo made a juicy turkey and the best stuffing I've ever had. His carrot ginger soup was worth having thirds and I think I personally ate an entire tray of Ms. Lamby's cassava root pudding from fresh root we brought her from the capital city on one of our many adventure tours. The resort is intimate and well designed. Views of the ocean from almost everywhere. Easy transportation by van, golf cart or bicycle into Hopkins. Our villa cleaned well and requests met with eagerness by staff.

Ian was one of and took us to the most incredible, knowledgeable guides who took the time to let us take our time to fully enjoy every moment and event. Isabelle was flawless in her reservation booking and providing local air and ground transportation. We were in knowledgeable and talented hands from the beginning to the end of our holiday.

More about Belize: We ate termites, saw an Elmer's glue tree, held a tarantula, cave tubed, snorkeled, zip lined, island hopped, afternoon napped in a hammock, shopped at local markets, climbed to the top of a Mayan temple, and rode bicycles on the pot-holed road into Hopkins where all the food was great and the people incredibly friendly. The owner of U Ga Da sang the Belize national anthem for us and the staff joined in from the kitchen. It was a very memorable experience.

Our daughter turned 13 to a homemade cake and local drummers who sang and danced Happy Birthday for her. We felt welcome and safe everywhere we went, the prices were right and we most certainly look forward to going there again someday.

We had wanted to plan a trip with our friends in a warm destination. We wanted sand, sun and great food with five star accommodations. We stayed at Belizean Dreams for 6 nights in November 25 –December 1, 2011. We stayed in a villa on the beach and when they say villa on the beach they mean it. We stepped off the porch of our three bedroom villa into the sand of the beach. Loved that! We were all pleased.
Our villa was very nice. There were three couples and the villa was perfect. Enough privacy for all and yet it was great to come together as well in the spacious living room and kitchen.
We opted for the all-inclusive package which included meals. The onsite restaurant was excellent and we felt the cook, Reynaldo, quickly learned our preferences and made every effort to accommodate them. Franco, our dinner waiter, offered accurate descriptions of the nightly dinner menu complete with wine suggestions. The menu was planned daily and we were never disappointed with the offerings. We spent every night enjoying fine meals and catching up as friends. It was awesome.
Our days alternated between excursions and lazy beach days. Just what we wanted. We just mentioned our curiosity to snorkel or zip line and Ian lined it up. One day we went to the reef and snorkeled stopping for lunch at their sister resort Coco Plum Island. My kind of excursion is being told where to show up and then having everything taken care of...boat chartered, gear procured and lunch arranged. Ian was great that way. Same thing when we went on the zip line and cave tubing tour. We just showed up at the office in the morning and Ian took us to the destination. He escorted us to the zip lines and then to lunch and then to the cave tubing. When we finished, he was waiting with the van. Ian is great!
On the other days we lazed around on the beach and in the pool. The staff made sure our every need was taken care of from drinks to snacks and even the volleyball.
Maybe the best part was after dinner every night. We would head over to the bar and meet up with George, the bartender. He was a wealth of information about Belize but also let us have fun and cut loose. We made many memories at that bar and we left a t-shirt stapled to the roof to prove it.
I don't know when we will return to Belize (I hope soon) but as a trip with friends (40 somethings) that are busy with kids and activities and work...it was awesome. We are all closer for it and really glad we planned it out. If you keep telling your friends we need to get together, book it today. It was great!
