Boy oh boy was I wrong about this place.... I was looking for the perfect exotic honeymoon for my husband and I-we are from Georgia. We used our frequent flyer miles for airfare and found Hamanasi on Tripadvisor and on the web. It got tons of great reviews and still continues to get steller reviews, but I thought that I'd share my honest opinion about this place so you are aware of what you are about to get into.
We had booked a 7 day/6 night package including the tours and meals to stay there in June 2006 for our honeymoon. It was quite expensive but we figured that we wouldn't have to spend anything else when we got there.
We got a nice treehouse room towards the back. It was very clean and tidy with a front porch, ceiling fan, and air conditioning. Our welcome was pleasant and the staff was great. The food was good except after breakfast, lunch, and dinner for 2 days-everything starting being boring and monotaneous. Granted there were many things on the menu, but when the same cook makes dinner-it kind of all tastes the same if you know what I mean.
We signed up for the discover scuba since we have never dove before. In order for my husband to go since he has asthma, we needed a doctor to check him out. The staff drove us to the village doctor, but he was on vacation for 1 month. So, they drove us 1.5 hours to the next city, left us at the front door of a public clinic which didn't open for 1 hour, and left us. My husband was terrified because he thought someone would kidnap me. This town had many poor people and we felt that we were sitting ducks in a foreign county where there were potholed dirt roads and concrete block shantys everywhere-no joke.
We ended up waiting for 1 hour, saw the doc, and got a note saying that my husband was clear to go. The driver found us a little later and headed back to the resort-thank God.
We went scuba diving a couple times and snorkeled-the water was fantastic! It was very clear and blue! Wildlife was obviously abundant there.
The beach at the resort was a brown colored sand with larger granules-try eastern US beaches and the beach water was brown! Meaning-brown! Not a spec of blue anywhere! Why? A river feeds into the ocean nearby and therefore no blue water. There is nothing like going to a beach to relax when the sand is not attractive and the water is murkey brown! There was seaweed that washed up daily but the staff raked it feverishly. So we spent some time at the pool which is decent but nothing fancy.
When the sun goes down, it is soooo dark. You need to bring a flashlight with you to see since our treehouse was way back. Bugs were insane-this is to be expected but I looked like I got attacked by chicken pox 2 days after being there! I even brought 4 different bottles of spray-needless to say the relaxing hammock at my front porch could not be used at all! After dark, there is NOTHING TO DO. There is the bar at the front desk which is 15' long and that it-seats 5 maybe? Some bar....and you can't really walk anywhere. Beach is pitched black-I believe there is only 1 other hotel nearby? And walking into "town" is a joke-the main intersection where King Kassava is located is a hut on the corner with 4 tables. I can't believe anyone likes this place-we sat down and ordered a beer but it was the only place to go! There is no shopping of any sort. You are pretty much isolated when you get here. There is no TV which is fine with me, but at 7pm there is NOTHING TO DO. I can't read my entire honeymoon! We went crazy with nothing to do that we asked the staff for a radio to listen to something. We were bored to tears literally and we totally regretted booking this place.
We ended up leaving Hamanasi early and savaging the last 3 days of our honeymoon. We told the front desk of our dissatisfaction and they would not even prorate our package which was not cheap-we had to pay in full when we booked it 6 months prior. We ended up buying another airfare to Ambergris Caye and wished we had gone there in the first place-white sand, blue, clear water, a town to walk to and go out to eat at any restaurants, etc. When people say that it is touristy-it's not. Yes, it is more popular, but there is a reason why people come here-nice beaches, lots of activities, restaurants, shopping, etc.
Hamanasi is good if you want to loaf around by yourself for days or have many friends to hang out with-then you could really be anywhere and it would be great. Diving is fastastic, but only if that is what you love and want to dive for 80% of the time that you are there. The rest of the tours are fine, but we couldn't stay another day there to go on one. I would not say that this place is good for families nor honeymooners-maybe for 3 days max. If you want peace and quiet for real, this is your place.
FYI-We are in our early 30s and have traveled to Costa Rica, Vietnam, Phillipines, Europe, across eastern US seaboard, and western US seaboard. We are well traveled and couldn't wait to leave Hamanasi. That's my 2 cents and we selected this place primarily because of Tripadvisor. So know what you are getting into before you pay your hard earned money for this place.
