“Excellent Sunday BBQ!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Went for Driftwood's Sunday barbecue. I live in Hopkins and this is the place to go for barbecue! As we were waiting for our burgers Denise explained how they were using local woods in the grill to give a better smokey flavour. We enjoyed our yummy OJ and rum drinks while we waited. driftwood always uses fresh squeezed juices for their drinks instead of the concentrate. I'm always amazed at these little details that make a big difference but living here I know that these small details can make for a lot of work behind the scenes. We chatted with the tourists, expats, and locals while we waited. Driftwood has always had a great mix of people that hang out and it really says a lot about the place. To me it says that everyone is treated equally, the food is good, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming and the prices are reasonable. Our burgers did not disappoint and I could taste that smokey flavour that she was talking about. Our burgers came with a side of home cut fries (another detail). I always love the pizza at Driftwood but don't pass up the other offerings here because they are delicious and well presented. Keep up the good work Denise and Oliver!

“Amazing Pizza”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

Situated on the beach in what we like to call NoHo (North Hopkins), The Driftwood Beach Bar and Pizza Shack is one of my favorite restaurants in Hopkins. The atmosphere is quintessential expat—with that perfect balance of embracing the local culture while maintaining a clean charming shack on the beach.

All ingredients are fresh and cooked right on the spot. As with most restaurants in Belize, the wait for the succulent fish & chips or lovely pasta or perfect pizza is part of the dining allure. This gives the diner a chance to mingle with fellow diners, chat with the darling owners, Ollie and Denise, or just sit back and listen to the waves while sipping one of Ollie’s faultless rum punches.

My preferred pizza is the BBQ chicken, but the Mediterranean is such a close second, I always must order both! (Where does Denise find feta in Belize?) Not overwhelmed with heavy sauces or greasy cheese, the crust is crunchy and flavorful in its own right. The only reason we had any crust remnants left over was because we were so damn full. “Hey, Ollie! Bring me a doggie bag for this crust, will you?” “Absolutely, love!”

No trip to Hopkins is complete without at least one visit to the Pizza Shack!

“A great spot!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

After reading the Trip Advisor Reviews, we knew we had to try this place, and weren't disappointed - in fact, we went back a 2nd time!! The pizza was fabulous - be sure to try the ham, pineapple with honey crust which was our favorite. Absolutely loved the local "flavor" of this place from meeting the owner, to the lady in the kitchen who prepared and (on one occasion) served the pizza. The 2nd time we visited, we sat outside on one of the picnic tables and enjoyed a conversation with one of the locals who sat down and had a beer with us. Had planned to spend that afternoon on the beach there, drinking beer and just chilling. A few lounge chairs up near the beach would have been nice and would have kept us there for the afternoon, but there are none so we returned to our resort.

Pricing? The way I feel about it -- you're on vacation! I truly have no idea how much the pizza was nor did I care .... it's all part of the experience. Our last night in Hopkins, we stopped by for a drink, as it was their "Locals Night" -- you just never know what to expect. That night, there were camera men there, and people all around one particular individual who we later learned was a famous singer - Ourelia somebody - even saw his CDs in the airport. So, we think a visit to Driftwood should definitely be put on your agenda!
