“A green oasis on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2012

Tucked in between the large resorts of Golden Sands and Park Royal, and not to mention the hundreds of souvenir stalls lining the main road on Batu Feringghi, the Lone Pine Hotel is like a much welcome oasis in a parched desert. Even after its recent renovation, where a brand new 5 storey block was added to the existing 2 storey-high blocks and old bungalow, it remains quietly understated.

It is probably one of the best choice for resorts in this part of the island, if you are looking to be away from the crowds in a typical beach resort.

Being an architect, i especially like the textures of the brickwork and the perforation blocks used throughout the resort as well as the lush hanging landscaping flanking the entry foyer to the hotel. The green lawns surrounded by the low rise blocks of rooms with quaint wooden louvred windows reminds me of the scale of a Malaysian Kampong (village). And the balcony bathtub in our deluxe room with a view of the sea was quite a nice touch as well.

The breakfast, with a mix of the international standards and local Penang favourites (char koay tiau, freshly cooked on the wok upon request) was one of the best I have had in any hotel.

Room Tip: Because the Lone Pine is located almost at the end of Batu Feringgi, one must not miss the chance to...

Dear SFR6262E,

Sunshine Greetings from Malaysia's Premier Boutique Beach Resort.

We are so happy that you have enjoyed your stay with us and we really value your comments on the design and service of the hotel. In fact, the architect firm who did the job, received an award for the best commercial building this year in Malaysia. We do try our best to provide good food and service to all our guests as we feel that this is the only way to distinct ourselves from the other establishments in Penang.
We wish you and family well and enjoy a wonderful festive season.

Best regards,
Khoo Boo Lim

Just left the hotel yesterday afternoon and it is a much better experience than the last hotel. Lone Pine is a remodeled hotel. It has old school charm with modern amenities. If anyone ever watched "Dirty Dancing", the place feels like the summer lodge in the movie. The rooms are big, doesn't feel cramped even with the three of us. We hanged out mostly in the verandah overlooking the Strait of Malacca. The staff members are amazing, so patient with our rowdiness. (It is an open bar wedding!) The wedding took place on the lawn adjacent to the beach, although it rained the previous night, someone was thoughtful enough to cover the grounds. I would recommend this place to stay for those who like Penang for its rich history and yummy street food.

Room Tip: Ask for the wing with elevators.

We chose a ground-floor room in the old wing - with a patio looking on to the garden and the sea beyond. A good move since it gave immediate access to the garden. And it was quiet. The patio provided a great place to 'chill-out' with a glass of wine (or two!). Very relaxing and peaceful.

Dear Ronda 2_2,

Sunshine Greetings from Malaysia's Premier Boutique Beach Resort.

We are very glad that you have enjoyed your stay with us. The Premier Garden room is indeed my personal favorite too and it is actually the original room of the first block of rooms that was built in 1948. Apart from maintaining the original structure, everything have been refurbished and upgraded.
Please keep in touch and we hope to see you soon again for another relaxing stay with us.

Best regards,
Khoo Boo Lim

After leaving the magical E&O in Georgetown for its sister hotel we knew we wouldn't be disappointed. We stayed in a super deluxe corner as we have a small child, this was perfect to fit a cot, and the day bed was excellent to put all the suitcases and such. The room was spacious and well designed, and the balcony and outdoor bath was so amazing. I used this during a thunderstorm and it was bliss.
The staff were attentive and friendly, especially with my son and our traveling companions children also. The beach is just a stroll away, with loads of fun to be had, although sadly no swimming. However the pools made up for that. A toddlers pool and normal pool with wonderful deck chairs to relax in. The night market in the Main Street our front was handy, but go further afield for good food.
The Japanese resturant was wonderful, the chef and staff were friendly and sweet.
We look forward to returning.
Mr and Mrs Rashid

My partner and I wanted to try somewhere different in Asia- We have done Bali and Thailand numerous times and thought we would give Malaysia ago and stumbled upon Batu Ferringhi. After looking at all the hotels in the area, we decided Lone Pine looked the most suitable.

Lone Pine certainly is a funky hotel- it looks great. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with a nice bathroom. My only issue with the bedroom was the "Free Mini-bar".. Whilst this was the case- I find it a bit of a joke when the mini-bar consist of 4 cans of softdrink and nothing else. The only softdrink I could drink was pepsi- the rest were horrible such as Lychee flavour.. I'm sure some people like this, but am surprised there wouldn't just be the classic flavoured softdrinks that appeal to a wider group. This certainly could be improved and perhaps a few other items to make it a positive.

Free wi-fi was great, pool area was really nice and never an issue getting pool chairs as is so often the case at larger resorts.

I have read so many Lone Pine reviews about weddings. We specifically asked about this when booking and requested to be in a quiet room etc. The day of arrival we were told of a wedding the following evening. This hotel unfortunately gives preference to weddings for the extra revenue rather than other guests that are staying in the hotel. The wedding was in a marquee with music blaring until past midnight. It was completely unacceptable but we couldn't be bothered to complain- the hotel clearly has made up their minds that the hotel will continue with night time weddings and disturb all guests that are trying to sleep.

Breakfast buffet was good- as always with buffets food tended to be a little bit cold, and selections got a bit boring after a couple of days- but that's to be expected.

Location in Batu Ferringhi was central and easy. Unfortunately, we found the area itself not to our liking.. If you are going to completely switch off and relax on resort grounds and enjoy the feeling of nothing to do then I highly recommend Batu Ferringhi as an area- if you like a few more nice dining/drink options for lunch and dinner, and a bit more of a vibe I would recommend elsewhere.

Service at Lone Pine wasn't as attentive as I had expected from many other reviews- some simple questions/requests were treated as hassels or not done. Staff often didn't say hello or stop their conversations when walking past one another in the lobby, corridors. I am from a hospitality background where you should always acknowledge the guest- not just to be polite but also for security purposes.

We checked out most of the surrounding properties, and Lone Pine certainly is the best in the area.

Dear Aussie_Traveller 30,

Sunshine Greetings from Malaysia's Premier Boutique Beach Resort.

Thank you very much for your review on the hotel during your recent stay with us. The points that you have raised have been taken in constructively and we will take the necessary measures for those that require improvements. The decision of providing a mixed of fruity drinks and standard sodas was taken as we have to be mindful when catering for both local and international guests. If a guest requests for only standard soft drinks, we would have oblige so without any hesitation. This initiative of providing complimentary drinks in the mini-bar is seen by us as another "Value Add" to all our guests unlike many other hotel establishments that charges you for almost everything.
As for the music played during any wedding events at the hotel, we observed a very strict rule to stop all entertainment by 11pm. We will normally adviced and informed the guests to move their partying to the hotel bar. This clause is stipulated in the contract and explained to all our guests upon confirmation of any events.
Anyway, our appreciation again for your feedback and we hope that we will get another opportunity to be of service to you. Have a nice festive time ahead.

Kind regards,
Khoo Boo Lim

Ok, I booked this place after looking around, and I COMPLETELY screwed up. I thought I was booking the Lone Pine Hotel. What a mistake.

After a hell drive from KL (flat tire and dead battery), we arrived about 3 hours late... at 3am. It took as 15 minutes circling around to find the entrance. No way did it look like a hotel at all from the outside. I had to bang on the gate to wake the sleeping security guard for another 10 minutes. Unlike most hotels, this one all the staff seems to go home after 10pm I guess.

We walked through the deserted lobby, up to the 2nd floor (3rd floor)... Found our closet entrance, I mean room entrance, and opened up. After waving away the musty odor that hit us, and figuring out the lights, we got a look of the place.

I wish the lights hadn't worked... My wife and I thought about sleeping in the car, but we were just too tired... We fell asleep with our clothes on (the bed linen smelled like it hadn't been changed after the last guest)vowing to be out first thing in the morning.

We mistakenly booked for 2 nights, and stayed a total of 8 hours, sleeping for 7 of them on the creaking bed with lumpy mattress.. I tried to cancel the rest, but they wouldn't refund, company policy...

The receptionist in the morning was friendly enough, saying we should just stay, she couldn't refund. I don't know if anyone else works there except the guard. Oh, and after daring to use the shower, and walking around the room, the bottom of my feet were black!! The rugs were so dirty and greasy... Shampoo the carpets!! Oh, and replace the florescent light, and the broken lamp that is taped together, and the creaking bed, and the carpets, and the room furniture...

Stay away from this place, it almost made me want to leave Penang!

Room Tip: Pick somewhere else to stay...

Thanks for your review. I appreciate your frank review and we will look into upgrading and improving our service for future customers. For other's information we would like to clarify but not justify are as follow :-

1. Our reception will only be open until 11pm. The room keys are given to our security for late check in guess.
2. The gate to our hotel will be closed after 12 pm to ensure the security of our inhouse guess.
3. Any bookings done through agoda, refund have to be referred to them too.
4. We do try our best to ensure customers are aware that we are Lone Pine Resort and not Lone Pine Hotel.

I would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused and I do feel the same way if my car had the same amount of problems as yours.

We were on a three day get away from KL and were looking forward to revisiting some of the things that everyone enjoys about Penang. We arrived late afternoon and were met in the entrance by Guido, who made a delightful first impression. The staff were all friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay a memorable one. We had booked a deluxe room with breakfast and a bath tub on the balcony. The bath tub was a great touch. With a great pool side area, and happy hour in the Batubar it was very hard to go out exploring. Breakfast in the morning was a typical buffet with a good range of foods and flavours. This is a great resort to kick back and enjoy being beside the beach. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Take the Deluxe room with the bath tub on the balcony. It is a relaxing way to end your day. Do en...
