“Great Beach Holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2009

We had a great holiday at the Parkroyal Penang and would return again. The staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was good and provided excellent variety, the pool was great (although I do agree with a previous contributor that some umbrellas would be welcome) and the location is excellent. Feedback from people we met was that apart from the Rasa Sayang, where the Rasa wing is the only one recommended (more than twice the price of the Parkroyal), this is the best of the hotels in Batu Ferringhi.

There are a couple of things though that people should know to assist with their stay:
- the lobby, restaurants and bars are not air-conditioned (ceiling fans are everywhere make sure you are seated under one) - initially I thought this was a drawback however in the end this may have helped us acclimatise quicker.
- smoking is allowed in certain areas of the restaurant. Just ask the staff for a table in the non-smoking area.
- the rooms are in need of a bit of a makeover. We had a Grand Deluxe Ocean View room. There is plenty of room, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom is clean, we had free broadband, 2 free bottles of water each day, cookies each afternoon. To be truthful although initially I was a bit disappointed in the room we were very comfortable.
- drinks can seem expensive. Take advantage of the 2 for 1 deals available from 5-7 pm. On Fridays and Saturdays (not sure about Sundays) Happy Hour is until midnight.
- food is cheaper outside the hotel however we had the Malay Set Dinner with Drinks Option (free flowing wine and beer) one night - approx $70 AU for 2, so it is still good value!

The hotel is in a great spot with the night markets right outside. Never pay the first price asked. I always feel around half is a good price although I understand that prices start off higher in the High Season. For great food - the Long Beach Cafe is fabulous and cheap (try the freshly made spring rolls MYR3 each - $1 AUS). Jewel of India was good too.

Catch the shuttle bus into Georgetown. The Perengin Mall has great shopping and is not aimed at tourists so prices are excellent. Try the free hop on bus service however our bus finished at the ferry terminal and we had to wait some time for another bus to come. Best for the more adventurous.

We have just returned from a 12 day trip to Penang, Langkawi and KL.
We stayed for 4 nights in the family room of the Park Royal on Batu Ferringhi.
The room was huge with a king bed and 2 singles(which they happily put together for our son to enjoy a king size bed) in the non smoking area, our balcony was one of the smaller ones but still gave a beautiful view of the ocean and beautiful hotel grounds.
Room was clean and bright and only criticism is the tv was the old type, not a flat screen plasma, however that didn't phase us as we weren't there to watch television. The family room was well worth the little extra money it cost. Also we agree that the drink prices in hotel were way too high, if they lowered them they would make a lot more money. The one milkshake and large glass of beer that we ordered by the pool cost around RM50 (AUS$17). Other than that we were very happy. Breakfast was great with a huge amount of variety for westerners and Asians. The freshly squeezed juices were yummy. A nice touch were the 2 large choc chip cookies they left when doing turn down service. The hotel was right in the thick of the night markets and I would highly recommend Long beach hawker market for fresh cooked cheap food. Our son loved the pizzas there. Also another great restaurant was "Kampungs" opposite the Rasa Sayang hotel. if you ring them they will pick you up from your hotel. It had a fantastic buffet for RM19 approx AUS $7 all you could eat, 88 choices of food, which was freshly cooked as you ordered it, you could just keep ordering until you burst, they also offered western food. We took a walk down the beach to the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel which was amazing but a good 15 minute walk to the markets and restaurants. All in all we were very happy with the Park Royal and would return tomorrow if possible......

We arrived after a 12 hour flight for our holiday, booked over a year earlier to be told by a disinterested receptionist that our rooms were not ready. The hill view rooms we finally moved into although good are not 4 star. One room had a bath mat covered in black mould, however this was quickly changed.
The hotel is in a good location midway along the Batu Ferrenghi strip with convenience stores and the night market right outside. The pool was excellent but could do with some parasols or shades in some parts of the grounds. The restaurants are average and expensive. The lounge bar had entertainment most evenings, the drinks a little on the expensive side my first two gin and tonics cost the same as the bottle of gin I bought at the airport.
Eating in the village I recommend the Ferrenghi Gardens, turn right out of the hotel and around two hundred yards up the road. It has top class furniture and amenities with great food at only a little over hawker prices. We initially booked the Golden Sands after previously staying there, due to the refurbishments we changed our booking. We think the Parkroyal is not comparable in service or standards.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your feedback which are always sincerely much appreciated as it is only through your positive criticism that we can improve our service befitted to all our guests.
I have personally reviewed with all concern the manners and behavior that it is expected from all of us at Parkroyal Penang and would like to offer my most sincere apologies for our poor staff's attitude upon your arrival; Yes we were running a very high occupancy at the time of your arrival and even so our check in time is at 3.00PM, we do our utmost best to check in guests as earlier as possible, however there is no excuse to be found for such poor behavior.
In regards of the meals and drinks cost I am pleased to let you know we have reviewed our pricing which seem to be very successful with all our guests. (For your information a gin tonic is at RM.16) Of course we won’t be able to be achieving the lower pricing offered by outside outlets as we are more restricted with more stringent health, labour, tax and standard regulations throughout our operation; and as well our food is in most part imported at a higher cost to assure that we offer the top quality daily products at its best of freshness.
I sincerely regret you did not inform me or my Team at the time of your stay about your dissatisfaction as we will have try our best to rectify where necessary.
I do appreciate that you may be deter from patronizing Parkroyal Penang again in a near future but will sincerely hope that you will reconsider and give us another opportunity to redeem ourselves and prove to you that we at Parkroyal Penang do care about all our guests.
I look forward to hear from you and wish you a wonderful day.
Sincerely

Francois Sigrist

This was our first visit to Penang and we stayed in a grand deluxe seaview room wth balcony. As previously stated in other reviews, within the hotel is great!
A cocktail is $30 ringotts which is approx the same price at bars outside the hotel, but a local beer was much more expensive. Food is an acceptable price within the hotel compared to Sydney prices, and if you want cheap, there is a large range on restaurants and the open air food court (nightsonly) within a few minutes walk from the hotel.
If i had to find any faults at all about the hotel ....the free internet keeps dropping out, we keep getting a knock on our door to see if we are happy with our room, the rain and storms, only 2 chocolate biscuits at night, i had to cook my own toast for breakfast, i had to wait for the scrambled eggs, pancakes, french toast, (and the list goes on) to be cooked for me at breakfast....
Oh dear....what a problem these things were! NOT.......LOL
We will definately be returning again to Batu Ferringhi.
There is one downside to the area....only 2 ATM's!
A definate 'must do' is the fish foot spa. There are plenty along the main street and all are good.

I arrived in Park Royale penang on August 31st , and stayed there for a week with my wife for my honeymoon. Once we were there , we were greeted by the customer service and checked in within 2 minutes , it was really quick. And we stayed in the lanai suite , amazing suite , and we were given a boquet of flowers , and even though the location was a little bit far , but still the hotel offered us a discounted rate on car rentals which helped us , but I suggest just take a cab doesnt cost much . But the hotel is in full high class and is amazing , the rooms are spotless and clean , there is nothing better than staying here , its the most amazing time we had in malaysia . Prior we stayed at the shangrila , but if u dont stay there in rasa wing , the stay isnt worth it , and to stay in the rasa wing , its huge amount of money. So I suggest this as the best place to stay , soo much to do in the resort and food isnt expensive at all !!

Service at hotel was excellent. Stayed in Grand Deluxe seaview room with balcony, the best, recommend you get a balcony room. just in case it rains, like it did in August for most of our trip except for 4 days of lovely sunshine. Good to sit on the balcony and watch all that is going on. Gardens are beautiful, and pool is lovely and clean with lots of chairs to lye on. Many restaurants close to hotel , good indian and malaysian food available anywhere from $3.00 to $10 per person. Hotel tours were reduced in price so many people took advantage of this and went on them. Not much to do when it rains all day, go shopping in Georgetown, watch videos etc. Too wet to do sightseeing if it involves getting in and out of car. Would recommend going to Happy Feet Fish Spa ,turn right at second set of lights past Parkroyal hotel and its on the left on the next corner. Night shopping was good. Personally we liked the shopping here more than KL. Unfortunately nothing comes alive till at least 11am or later so if you are an early riser go to the gym (which is excellent) or go for a walk / run . turn right at front of hotel and head off past Hard Rock Hotel. There is an old chinese cemetry along this road, and you see many things early in the morning you wouldnt see in the day. ie monkeys jumping out of the forest and running along the power lines!!. Just be careful as there is not much room on the side of the road. Would like to have got to the National Park and walked up to the lighthouse which was built in the 1800's , but too wet. Stayed for 10days, could have just stayed for 7 and still had good time. All in all great hotel and area.

My husband and I stayed at the Park Royal for 6 days in the middle of August. We had a grand delux room with a seaview, Unfortunately when we arrived we weren't happy with the standard of the room, had an unusual smell. Within 30 minutes we were allocated a new room up one floor, which we were more than happy with.
We loved the Chocolate Chip cookies that were put in our room each night, it was a really nice part to our hotel stay. The pool area is lovely.
I do think the cost of food and drink in the hotel is extreme, that is why we and many others ate outside the hotel. The rooms were very clean, and the breakfast choice was amazing. We both had a few massages, which were just lovely, also the ones out in the garden, lovely couple who do the massages.
