“Perfection. No Complaints. Very Satisfied!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2009

My wife and I stayed here while in Penang over a long weekend during a lengthy business trip. We were extremely happy with the hotel and wouldn't think about staying anywhere else when we return to Penang. From the beautifully appointed room to the excellent food and service, it was all top-notch.

We stayed in the Rasa Wing though I also took a brief tour of a few rooms in the Garden Wing - just in case we aren't so fortunate next time. As of this writing, the rooms in the Garden Wing are in the process of being renovated and the finished product is quite nice. My understanding is about half the rooms have been renovated. One should definitely consider staying in the Rasa Wing however, if the serenity of the adults only (saltwater) swimming pool is appealing. The Rasa Wing also provides complimentary High Tea and a brief cocktail hour. I noticed that the availability of complimentary cocktails and canapes have been reduced to just one hour, from 6 pm to 7. Fine by me.

The public spaces of the hotel are exceptional and the gardens are amazing. The amount of space is phenomenal. The lounge chairs on the shaded sand and lawn just behind a hedge from the public beach allow total relaxation well within the sound of the crashing surf but nicely isolated from the riff raff on the beach. The adults only pool for guests staying at the Rasa Wing is beautiful and provides a highly relaxing environment. The pools at the Garden Wing are also very nice and highly suitable if you're unforunate enough to be travelling with children under age 16.

The staff at the hotel is amazing - all the way around. From the front desk receptionists to the spa employees, and from room maintenance staff to the bell hops, each staff member was hard working, pleasant and efficient. They really know how to treat guests here. Management has done a fantastic job.

We stayed in this hotel for a week before heading on to Borneo. The hotel itself was good and in a great location; the start of the night market is just outside and to the right. The room (1305) was clean and a decent size with good LCD TV and separate bath and shower and the staff were always courteous and friendly and really couldn’t do enough to help you. There was a decent Happy Hour at the beach bar with half price drinks and the 2 for 1 offer on the hotel buffet was good value. There was a huge choice for breakfast, catering for all tastes and a decent pool with plenty of loungers, etc.

The best thing about this hotel is the location. As I said before it is just at the start of the night market with loads of eateries on its doorstep. If there was one I would recommend it would be Flare (straight out of the Garden Wing entrance, to the right and about 300 yards on the opposite side of the road). The staff there were brilliant; really friendly. The food was excellent and inexpensive and they do amazing cocktails; some of the best I’ve ever had! There was a live band there on a couple of nights which added to the overall experience.

Overall, a great hotel with true Malaysian hospitality in a good location. No complaints whatsoever.

I stayed in the Rasa Wing Premier Room which was highly recommended to us when my mum made the reservations over the phone. The moment we made reservations, the Diana Sylvester contacted us if we had any special requests and reservations we need to be made. The service is really perfect and it is amazing how they can remember our names just after one day! Ms Sylvester helped us arrange our reservations and took really good care of us during our stay!

We stayed in room 2538, which was on the 5th floor and had a wonderful balcony with great views of the beach. The sound of the waves made the balcony a great place for an afternoon nap. The room was large and well appointed. The sofa cushions did smell a little funky... but besides that.. it was perfect and HUGE! I especially liked the large shower which had 3 different showerheads... you could fit a party of 4 in that shower! The balcony also had a large tub where you can have baths drawn for you with different bath salts!

If you are at the pool (the Rasa pool is only for Rasa Wing guests), you can get a lovely foot massage on the pool loungers... those were awesome!!! Chi, the hotel's spa was amazing too... the spa villas were the largest I have ever seen, which steam rooms, large showers, private changing room and huge treatment room. The staff at the spa were very knowledgeable and presented themselves very well.... One of the best spas EVER. The hair and nail salon however, which is within the hotel (but separate from the spa) was alright and I think has room for improvement.

Rooms in the Rasa Wing include breakfast, tea and evening cocktails as well as free flow of non-alcoholic drinks all day. The concierge at the wing was also very helpful in arranging for water sports and beach activities (or a trip to Georgetown) which was very helpful, we literally did not leave the hotel during our trip! The food is great and moderately priced so there was really no need to leave the comfort of the hotel.

The staff really makes this hotel as amazing as it is. The hotel building isn't really the best out there but what makes it memorable are the people. From the previous reviews, we knew not to take the Garden Wing, but I think the upgrade is worth it! I can't wait to return!!!!

Rasa Sayang is the perfect hotel- it has life and energy but at the same time it can be beautifully quiet and relaxing. I have been coming here since the 1990s, and can say that it is just gorgeous especially since the refurbishment. On my last trip, we stayed for 10 days in August in the Rasa wing which I would recommend instead of the garden wing if you want a higher level of exclusivity and a more personal experience. Plus, there is the private pool purely for Rasa wing guests and I loved the free drinks all day long plus afternoon tea and canapes in the Rasa lounge.

The weather was a bit hit and miss as it tends to be during this time but we made full use of the pool which has a lovely peaceful atmosphere- and contrary to what other reviews say, I did not notice the noise of jet- skis etc. from the beach at all. We ate at both the Spice Market Cafe and the Feringgi Grill- the latter I found really good value for money considering the quality of the food and the fact that the chefs take so much care to provide little extras such as appetizers in between courses etc.

The food outside the hotel in the hawker stalls and night markets is also delicious and extremely cheap. But I would not recommend eating at some of the other restaurants opposite like Marios which clearly do not know what Italian food is supposed to be like. The breakfast in the Feringgi Grill is great and a really pleasant experience- the only thing I would say is that I got a bit annoyed when some of the staff were a bit too intrusive and asked personal questions when we were trying to eat. But overall, the staff are extremely friendly and very professional, yet know when to step back.

What I do wish they would get rid of though, is the extremely annoying elevator musack in the Feringgi grill and the Lobby! I have no other complaints though- the rooms are comfortable, stylish and well designed and the surroundings are really pleasing on the eye. The Chi Spa is gorgeous, the beach (although not tranquil and untouched like in the Maldives or wherever) is lively and still has sparkling blue water. Rasa Sayang is perfect if you like to laze around by the pool and stay in the lap of luxury- you really don't need to leave it at all.

Dear TripAdvisor Member,

Greetings from all of us here at Shangri-la's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa!

Thank you for your wonderful feedback on the resort. We are glad to hear that you have enjoyed all your previous stays and this one as well, particularly the Rasa Wing and its accompanying dining privileges as well as the selections at the Feringgi Grill.

We apologise that you found the staff at Feringgi Grill a little too intrusive. They were probably just trying to be friendly and it was not our intention to cause you any discomfort. However, we are glad you found the overall level of service to be very satisfactory.

Thank you for your feedback concerning the elevator and Lobby muzak and we will give it due consideration. We are delighted that you are pleased with other aspects of the resort such as the rooms, gardens and CHI, The Spa.

Lastly, thank you for being willing to recommend our resort to others and we hope to see you again.

Overall we enjoyed our time in the hotel and if we would go back to Penang we would consider this hotel again (or the Eastern and Oriental).

First the positive things:
The staff members are all very friendly and helpfull. Not only the staff that is meant to to that, but also the cleaning staff and maintenance.
The hotel grounds are very nice and well maintained. NIce gardens and a good pool with enough chairs.
The food was very good and the prices are quite low for this kind of hotels. Really enjoyed our breakfast and dinner in the main restaurant, again with perfect staff.

But there are also two downsides:
The garden wing rooms are not good. They are old and there are a lot of stains in the floor. You can upgrade to the RASA wing rooms, but the upgrade is quite expensive. And altough they are better, they still lack a wow factor. So we decided not to upgrade (since we were only 2 nights there).
The beach does not belong to the hotel. This is not a problem, but the beach is really not clean at all. There are people trying to sell you boat rides, horse riding, etc. I am not sure if they create the mess, but no one bothers cleaning it a bit. It really spoils the view.

All with all this is defeneatly not the best hotel I ever stayed in. If you want to have a few days relaxing at a beach I recommend the Datai in Langkawi. Nevertheless if you want to go to Penang (a lot to see and do there), I would still consider this hotel. The negative points are acceptable, but it could be a great hotel if they solved this.

Dear TripAdvisor Member,

Greetings from all of us here at the Shangri-la's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa!

Thank you for sharing feedback of your stay experience with us. We are glad that overall, you are satisfied with your stay at the resort and would consider us again for your next trip.

We regret that our Garden Wing rooms were not up to your expectations. To ensure our guests' continuous delight and comfort, the rooms undergo thorough cleaning regularly. We pay utmost attention to stains on the carpet/floor and if these marks are not removable, then the affected section of the carpet will be replaced.

Unfortunately as the beach is a public domain, we cannot control its conditions even though we are very committed to environmental causes. We conduct regular beach clean-ups among the resort staff while working in tandem with external organisations. The latest effort was on September 15 in conjunction with World Coastal Day. The resort works closely with the Penang State government to regulate the activities of the beach vendors to ensure the best possible experience for the beach-goers.

On the positive side, we are glad to hear that you are happy with the service, food and gardens at the resort. Your wonderful comments will inspire us towards further excellence.

We are continuously improving all aspects of the resort and your comments are much appreciated to help us advance further. We hope to see you again.

Yours sincerely,

Desmond Hatton

What a beautifull hotel ! Check-in, rooms, interieur off the hotel, swimming pool, restaurants all is just perfect. We spend our last Malaysia nights (2) here and enjoyed every minute. The best breakfast buffet we ever had..... and we are spoiled ! In the evening its nice to walk a little bit and go to the night market. We had dinner in the spice market restaurant in the hotel and the buffet was great. Special thanks to the footmasseur at the swimming pool (wellew). We all 3 had our feet feeling very happy and young again ;-) , We only relaxed so did not see anything off the island Penang.

I stayed in the Ocean wing premier rooms, you have a bath on the balcony with a big sitting area also the bathrooms are massive you have a shower room with a rain shower head, you can probably fit about 10 people in there and you would still have loads of room!, Included in the cost of the room you have breakfast, high tea and evening canapes! Also you have drinks included, the champagne is a lovely start to the evening! This place is amazing. i would definately go back!
