“Lovely….but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

We have just spent a very relaxing 10 days here.
First impressions weren't great, our room ( having paid extra for a family suite)
was although spotless drab and in need of redecoration and not what I would expect from a 5 star hotel. We were offered another room in the Rasa wing at an extra cost- having already paid an extra cost for the family suite we felt this was too much.
One of the managers explained that this was a "Resort" and we shouldn't compare the hotel to city "Shangri La's" . Maybe this should be mentioned when booking !
When we checked in we weren't given any information about the kids club or any other services….the couple next to us who where staying in the "Rasa Wing" were greeted with drinks and cold towels…..! My children stood there complaining they were thirsty and weren't offered a drink. Little attention to detail I know but this isn't what I would expect from the Shangri La .

Breakfast was very good and staff were excellent.
The resort grounds were stunning.
The Kids Club was excellent once we found it and my children age 6 and 10 spent a few days there.
Batu Feringgi is an ok place with plenty of restaurants , none that were amazing though.
Food although much more expensive was much better in the hotel.

had 2guestrooms in rasa wing. Overall excellent in terms of facility, service, cleanliness, location, food.
however, we were particularly disappointed by the lack of 'real' sea-view despite booking a seaview room (&following this up by repeated email requests for the highest floor room possible for an unobstructed sea-view).
There was a particular reason I wanted at least 1of the rooms to have a sea-view for my mother in law.
However, we were allocated rooms 349 & 352 (i think) which were actually only 1floor up from garden level, & although the rooms really were superb with unbelievably impeccable service from all, the lack of a true sea- view as well as a rather weak 'monsoon' shower made the stay less than perfect.

We also thought that the beach needed a general cleaning-up every morning to remove washed-up detritus - glass, plastic bottles, even used diapers!

We have stayed at golden sands, lone pine, E&O etc and probably will return here in future despite all the above, but not in the immediate future.

Dear farahnaz,

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

We are disappointed to know that you were not accorded the room as per your request. We have informed our Customer Sales Agent to contact you directly on this matter and hope to make amends. We will ensure that you will get a room of your choice during your next stay with us.

We will also look into the overall cleanliness of the public beach fronting our resort. We work closely with the local council to ensure that the beach remains cleaned and well kept all year round.

Thank you for staying with us and look forward to welcoming you back again to Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa.

We booked two rooms in December and were pleasantly surprised when we were offered a free upgrade to the Rasa wing. The rooms are spacious, very comfortable and have everything you can expect from a 5-star hotel.

Guests at the Rasa wing enjoy afternoon tea from 3pm-4pm and evening cocktails from 5.30pm-7.30pm. For the evening cocktails, men are required to wear long pants or you will be asked to sit at the terrace. On the second day of our stay, the terrace was full and the waiter insisted that I wore long pants. As I didn't bring one with me, the hotel lend me one. This is where the whole formal dress code thing got ridiculous and hilarous. The "pants" they lent me were a big piece of apron/robe/table cloth for someone with a waist size of about 60 inches. I seriously wondered how is this apron/robe/table cloth helped with the "formal" atmosphere the hotel over-zealously wished to create.

Rasa wing guests can also opt for a more exclusive breakfast at Ferringhi Grill. However, what they serve here is not a full breakfast meal but merely a much smaller, continental version of the buffet breakfast, which means really limited in choice. We ended up back in the main cafeteria with the crowd.

The main pool is big but lacked character. This is not surprising as the hotel positioned itself as a luxury hotel rather than a family hotel. Rasa wing guests have access to an exclusive pool which does not welcome children. However, the reception was very helpful that they arranged for us to visit the pool in Golden Sands (their sister hotel next door) where there is a water slide and a more child-friendly environment.

The beach is overly crowded with operators of various water sports activities so much so that the hotel had to resort to setting up the beach benches on the garden lawn instead of on the beach itself.

Notwithstanding some of the shortcomings of the hotel, we did enjoy our stay very much. And we have to thank the staff of Rasa Sayang for it. The service level here is probably the best we had experience in Malaysia (along with Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu). They were very friendly, sincere and went all out to make our stay a great one. Special thanks to Darren and Jon.

Definitely would recommend this place if you are looking for a luxury, romantic holiday but there are better choices for family with young children.

Room Tip: Ground floor room has direct access to the gardens/pool but lack privacy.

Dear penangowl,

Thank you so much for sharing your recent stay experience with us on TripAdvisor.

We are pleased that you had the opportunity to be upgraded to Rasa Wing during your stay with us. We have noted your comments regarding the dress code during cocktail hours. Suffice to say, all views will be taken into account. We will address your views with our Rasa Wing Manager to ensure that all guests are catered to.

Rasa Wing was originally designed for couples in mind. However, we do welcome young families with young children and Rasa Wing guests have access to the main pool. Having Golden Sands Resort located next door allows our guests with young families to have a wider choice of child friendly activities. In that manner, guests can have the best of both worlds.

Our resort is located on a public beach. The beach operators are not affiliated with our resort in any way. We have placed lounge chairs at the beach front at the Garden Wing area.

Thank you for your compliments about Darren and Jon. I am sure they will be pleased to know that they were mentioned in your review.

We look forward to your visit to Penang again very soon.

My husband and I stayed here as part of our honeymoon in April 2013 and it was absolutely amazing. We upgraded to the Rasa wing and it was well worth it. Staff are the most friendliest I have ever come across in the world, genuinely and sincerely nice to you, not expecting tips like other places I have been to. The food was outstanding from the excellent breakfast buffet to the afternoon tea (on par with London hotels) and the canapés and cocktails in the evening. Lots of restaurants nearby where you can have dinner and also enjoy a lovely foot massage. Lots of sun beds available, no need to reserve. Would definitely return and recommend this hotel (have been to shangri la in Borneo and KL too and they were just as amazing).

Just spent 5 nights at Rasa Sayang. Lovely hotel in lovely grounds. Arrived very tired from an overnight flight from the Middle East. Room wasn't ready but lady on reception did her best to get us to our room as soon as possible. Fab room which we presume was an upgrade as we hadn't booked a room with balcony & sea view. Booked Rasa Wing which was a blessing as it had an adults only pool - other pool in Garden Wing resembled Butlins! Cocktails served from 5.30pm-7pm with nibbles. Some staff more than happy to keep replenishing your glasses (Chan), some just ignore you when doing the rounds (young miserable lad).

Spice Market brunch - food was fab, as was food at Pinang Bar. However our Christmas Gourmet dinner in the Ferinngi Grill didn't meet our expectations. Extremely slow in getting the food to us, so much so that people who were seated after us were served before us. The service only picked up after we mentioned it but then we felt like we were complaining. Also our champagne was left sitting on the counter for at least 10 minutes before being brought to our table, we sent it back for a cold one although no doubt it just went off to sit in a bucket of ice! Seems every lady received a red rose upon departure - I didn't. Water added to our bill too which we didn't have. Quite disappointed with overall experience although when the food did come it was very nice.

Booked jungle walk for one morning and turned up only to be asked 'have you booked'? We certainly didn't get up for 8am for no reason! We didn't go in the end as felt extremely unwelcome.

Free shuttle bus to Georgetown was good. Went one afternoon for a meander around, got the last bus back just before the heavens opened!

All in all we had a good time, shame the Christmas dinner saga put a small dampner on it.

Dear Hufflepuff33,

Thank you for sharing your comments with us. We are pleased that you were able to experience your stay at the Rasa Wing. We are sure that Chan at the Rasa Lounge will be pleased to know that he was mentioned so kindly in your review.

With regards to your cocktail hour and jungle walk experience, we will brief and train our staff to be more attentive, sensitive to guests' needs and pleasant when serving during busy hours.

We are disappointed to hear about your less than perfect experience during your Christmas dinner at the Feringgi Grill. Service was not consistent on the evening you visited our grill. Please be rest assured that this is an exception rather than a norm. Please provide us with more details via e-mail at communications.rsr@shangri-la.com so we may investigate internally and take necessary action to improve.

We hope that you will choose to stay with us again so that we can deliver hospitality that is above and beyond your expectations.

Kind regards,

Having saved hard for most of 2013, we stayed here from 22nd December 2013 to 29th December 2013, and have found the hospitality, food & drink, and the standard of appointment of this hotel to be nothing less than exceptional. To stay in the Rasa Wing is an extra expense, but without doubt, worth it ten times over. Among other benefits, the exclusive pool, free soft drinks and complimentary drinks during cocktail hour were greatly appreciated.

Staying in the Rasa wing has been ideal for us as, even though we are only in our mid-twenties, we wanted a quiet luxury adult-only get away without too many screaming kids around. Families with children are generally accommodated in the Garden Wing which has more appropriate facilities for them and made our stay all the more enjoyable.

Both myself and my partner have been extremely impressed with all of the the staff, many of whom remembered our names after only the first day of our visit. In particular, the friendly lads by the Rasa wing pool do a great job with the towels and serving of any food or drink that you might order during the day and the service staff in all of the restaurants onsite are very courteous and professional.

The amenities within the hotel are all certainly deserving of the 5* rating, in particular the Ferrenghi Grill restaurant which exceeded our expectations by a mile. The food there is simply fantastic. Such quality comes at a price, but only comparable to visiting a top hotel restaurant in the UK (the bottle of wine often costs as much as the food as alcohol is comparatively expensive in Malaysia). Visiting the sister resort (Golden sands) for a meal on our last day highlights the difference between the two. Nothing wrong with Golden Sands, but the Rasa Sayang is simply a cut above. In addition, everything is spotlessly clean and maintained to a very high standard.

The hotel seem to have an affiliation with Tour and Incentive travel group who can organise day trips for guests. We met the extremely helpful Janet in the Rasa lounge at 10:15 am on each occasion and were glad that she could arrange for the very polite and professional Philip and Lawrence to take us on sightseeing tours around the island. We found these to be great value trips.

In short, we have enjoyed our stay in Malaysia thanks in no small part to choosing the Rasa Sayang. Yes, it is expensive to stay here, but in our opinion worth every single penny.
