5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

Had a great time at the Shangri-La's Rasa Rayang Resort & Spa.

Would definantly recommend paying to upgrade to the Rasa Wing Rooms (Probably the Delixe or Premier) - There are lots of extra benefits with the Rasa Wing Rooms that are definitely worth taking advantage of (i.e seperate pool just for rasa wing guests inc free soft drinks by the pool. Afternoon tea from 3-4 - yummy sandwiches, cakes & scones!). Cocktails & beers between 6-7). 2 choices of restaurant for breakfast.

Hotel is only a short walk from shops /market stalls. Taxi's everywhere - very reasonable prices.

Geat hotel - highly recommended!!

It was our first stay at Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, check-in was fast. We stay 3D2N at the Garden Wing, felt the room was quite old and dated. The staff on the other hand were very friendly and attentive. We liked the grounds of the resort as the rainforest trees provided great shade and time away from the many guests. The resort knew it was our wedding anniversary and gave us free cake and wine. That was a nice surprise. They just need to upgrade and refresh their rooms and it would have been much nicer. The breakfast and dinner spread was great. Kids Zone was great for the kids, and our daughter enjoy it and is free, wish the kids program run through lunch time as well to allow the parent to have their quite moment alone.

It was my first ever stay at a Shangri La hotel and must say was I was quite disappointed. For a 5 star hotel everything seemed pretty mediocre. The sea facing deluxe room was really average, nothing sumptuous about it. The carpet and the upholstery looked very tired and seemed rather well worn. Staff did try their best but seemed largely overworked especially at the 'mass breakfast production area'. Despite their efforts it still clearly lacked the "5 star ambience". The swimming pool seemed to need a clean, there was to much leafy foliage around the pool and all kinds of such debri floating on the water. The beach area is nice and secluded but you can't swim due to the jellyfish so that pretty much leaves the over busy pool as the next choice. Also the hotel is divided into 2 sections, one for the more up market customer and this has clearly led to the inferior section to be neglected.

Reception staff was good, Fauzia in particular who dealt with us, did her very best to and gave us personal service. The breakfast staff did try but they were so rushed off their feet, it felt like some large eatery, where one could not relax at all and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.
If you are travelling to get away from it all then avoid this place, its much more suited to families and young children. The busy public areas are way too busy and no there is luxury feel about the place. I have made up my mind never to stay with a Shangri La hotel again. It's boutique hotels I will be looking instead of these large chains that ride on their larger than life reputations.

Room Tip: If you can afford it stay at the Rasa wing for sure.

We had a great weekend here.A short trip with our little boy to enjoy the pool.
When we arrived at the rasa wing there was no greeting.Being locals we didnt really mind that though. We went to the reception and then was a proper greeting, a welcome drink offerred immidiately.
Check in was smooth and fast and it was funny when they asked for both our ICs.so far i have never experience that in any hotel. We complied anyway. We were then ushered to our room by the staff.we were extremely happy with the room.Pool view with magnificent view of the trees and the garden.
Everything was in place.
The pool was wonderful. my son enjoyed it very much. i notice some tourists have left their children playing in the pool alone , playing water guns and splashing water to everybody walking nearby.
None of the hotel's fault anyway but i think the staff should be calling their parents.
We were very careful watching them closely just in case the kids pointed the water gun at our son!!
We went to the beach and was very disappointed.Jetskis were back in business.Stray dogs walking around leisurely. The excuse will always be this is a public beach and those are outside operators .Well ,outside operators who make money from the hotel's patrons.
I have to be on the look out for parachute taking off and landing and there was no way kids can play by the beach peacefully.Having stray dogs walking around..there s no way we are sitting on the beach or let our son make sand castle with sand with dog's poo.!!!Something have to be done by the hotel about this.
we had dinner, it was great but we had to rush because of the rain.
the next day we took the breakfast, wonderful selection and perhaps the best breakfast we have so far!!
other than the beach we have no complaints.!!

We have stayed several times at the Rasa Sayang, Garden Wing and never had a bad stay. Last week was no exception and we managed to get a room on the top (8th) floor with a sea view, which was blissfully quiet.

We particularly like the ‘happy hour” drinks down at the beach bar, great setting and good prices. The pool area and gardens are delightful and there are nice touches such as bringing around fruit skewers to the guests. The buffet breakfast and dinner are very good quality and you can also charge to your room, if using the restaurants at the adjacent Golden Sands Hotel. If you are a Malaysian resident, ring up the hotel direct, to get the best rate.

Recently stayed there during a company conference and was surprised to see that the hotel did not change much despite its multi-million ringgit refurbishment in 2004 to 2006. The room was comfortable and clean but the furnishing look a bit tad dated for a 5 star resort. Food was average as in any other hotel in Penang. Nobody eats in. After all this is the street food capital of Malaysia! I would give plus points for its big sprawling white sandy beach and its swimming pool. As for ambience and facilities, I believe it is comparable with any other hotels within the Shangri-La Group. Overall, I wouldn't mind staying there again but I would definitely not be spending much time in the room except to catch the much needed beauty sleep!
