“Usual Superb Shangri-La Standard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

We stayed here for 4 nights in October after staying in Shangri-La's in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu. Check in was a breeze and we were offered free Nutmeg juice on arrival. Breakfast was a choice of every cuisine imaginable, however, no chocolate fountains like in KK and also no proper bacon which was disappointing. We ate at the buffet 2 nights which was great and tried the Ferringhi Grill also which was fine dining at its best.

The hotel is showing its age compared to the newly refurbished Singapore Shangri-La. The beds are very comfortable and staff friendly and helping out when they can. I expected the gym to be better equipped given the size of the resort. Another point to note is that you are warned about jellyfish in the sea and as a result nobody goes in. The pool is very relaxing and could easily stayed for longer after an energetic sight seeing holiday around Malaysia. Poolside drinks were expensive but the milkshakes were amazing.

Room Tip: The Rasa wing is the posher section of the hotel.

Service at the front desk was superb. They made sure you are aware of the latest promotions in case you wanted to upgrade, etc. We had welcome drinks and cookies. And the best part was that front desk actually shows you up to your room! Thats a first!

The room was great - clean and lighting was good. It also came with a private balcony overlooking the fantastic 5 star pool. It wasn't very big but sufficient for a family of 3 (with a baby cot and that came with free baby toiletries - how nice).

Breakfast spread is one of the widest i have ever experienced. Food quality was superb. They had varieties of oven fresh baked buns and hot crispy croissants (must not miss this). Even their kuey teow soup tasted so good. Very fresh orange juice as well.

What was truly amazing was the attention to details. I ordered a cake and they sent it to my room. We had some of it and left it in the room. When we came back, it looked like a brand new cake (they trimmed out all the fallen bits and pieces from the cake and plate and replaced all with new cutleries). They also realized there were 3 occupancies in the room and gave 3 free bottles of water instead of just 2 and replenished them twice a day.

Truly warm and awesome service. The only minor let down was when we first arrived. It took the concierge quite a while to come help us with luggages. The other thing would be the location at Batu Ferringhi. Its about 20mins drive to the town where heavenly Penang local hawker stalls are. Other than that, everything was excellent.

I will definitely return for another longer stay

Room Tip: Best is to get a room with seaview. But if you dont want to pay the additional price, then choose a...

The hotel was spotless, the staff so helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. We were two ladies travelling and they made us feel that they were looking out for us, when we returned from our daily adventures. It is a first class hotel, rooms were well maintained twice a day, ice cold flanne'ls were made available around the pool, and in the sun bathing grounds, together with ice cold water.
You would have to experience the breakfast, the hotel caters for every nationality, I have travelled far and wide, and the food at this hotel is above 5 star. Its not cheap but its good.

In George Town there many places to see, and easy to get around on the local buses. And if you care to you can take a trip back over to the mainland across one of the longes bridges to the Orangutan Santuary, that was a really special day for us, arrange it with you tour guid just to do the Santuary.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Shangri La Rasa Raya for 4 nights.

Upon arrival at the resort we asked if an upgrade was available (we'd booked a superior room); the staff kindly asked us if we'd like to see both rooms before deciding (this surprised me as there was no obvious pressure to take the upgrade). After seeing our options we decided to take the upgrade and the check-in was then swiftly completed in the room with another staff member bringing our bags and an extra room card up no more than 5 minutes later.

The staff at the Resort at fantastic - very polite, friendly and helpful without being intrusive.

As a couple without children we were glad we'd booked the Rasa Wing particularly as the pool is adults only making it the perfect place to chill out!

The only disappointment for me was breakfast at Ferenggi Grill - whilst the selection of pastries, cereals, fruits and juices were acceptable, the hot items (cooked to order) were not up to the expected standard. For example my poach eggs were overcooked and watery and the english muffin they were served on were soggy! Next time (yes, we hope to return!) we will try the buffet at Spice Market instead. The afternoon tea did make up for the breakfast disappointment... The scones were particularly delicious.

Overall, the Shangri La Rasa Raya makes for a great getaway and I'll definitely be looking for the opportunity to return.

My wife and I stayed here for 10 nights recently. Our room was in the Garden Wing on the 2nd floor with supurb views over the gardens and beach. The staff at this hotel could not be more friendly or helpful, from the bell boys up to the managers. Nothing was too much trouble. Keewi in the Lobby Bar was first class and was so friendly and always there with a smile. You only had to go in once and she would remember your drinks for any further visits. Everything was spotless and the cleaning teams always had a smile and would try to engage you in conversation to try and improve their English. The bell boy team would always talk, the security staff on the entrance to the grounds would always salute and say hello. Batu Ferringhi is a quiet resort, but for peace and luxery you will find it hard to beat this hotel. Have stayed in their sister hotel in Borneo, which again was great but this one beats them purely on the entire staff going that extra mile to make YOUR stay unique.

We stayed for five nights at the Resort in September. We arrived late at night due to missing a connecting flight but there was no problem when we arrived and check in was straightforward. Our room was in the garden wing on the 6th floor with a fabulous view over the pool & the sea.
We found the staff to be excellent and nothing was too much trouble, everyone was friendly and helpful. We celebrated our silver wedding anniversary during our stay and had a fantastic meal at the Ferringhi Grill on that evening, the table was scattered with rose petals and at the end of the meal we were presented with a cake which was such a lovely touch and made us feel very special. We had the tasting menu and weren't disappointed, there were a couple of things included on this menu that I didn't like so the waiter just substituted them for something else which was great. The food was out of this world if a little expensive, but we expected that.
Breakfast was plentiful with a wide variety to choose from, the only downside was that we found it pretty chaotic most mornings even when the hotel wasn't full.
The grounds are beautiful & well maintained, we even had a resident monitor lizard!
We thought it was a great idea having people offering foot massages by the pool, we tried it & can recommend .
Whilst the pool was lovely, I don't think it is big enough. The rasa wing has an adult only pool but obviously you have to be staying in the Rasa wing to use it which we weren't!
A nice touch was the offer of the Hotel's buggy when we went out each evening, as the Rasa is right at the end of the strip it is quite a long walk so the buggy takes you to the Golden Sands resort and its a shorter walk from there.
The night market has grown since the last time we were here and we had fun in the evenings bartering for bags, shirts etc.
Overall we had an excellent stay, the staff are very well trained and a cut above those at hotels we have stayed in previously in Penang. We would definitely recommend this Hotel & can't wait to go back!

Myself and my husband have not long returned from our honeymoon at the Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa and are longing to return! We have never experienced such impeccable service which was consistent throughout our 10 night stay. The resort is beautiful and very well looked after. Upon arrival we were offered an upgrade to the Rasa wing as we were on our honeymoon, we thought 'why not?' and are so glad we did! I'm sure that had we not upgraded we would have still had an amazing stay, but all the little special extra's that we got in the Rasa wing just made our honeymoon all the more special. We had use of the Rasa wing pool which included soft drink refreshments all day, fruit sticks and cold towels. Every day at 3 we had afternoon tea with refills of sandwiches and tea! Then cocktail and canapés hour at 6-7 where top up's of sparkling wine are in abundance!
All the staff were so friendly and helpful always have a friendly chat and a smile for you. One particular gentleman called Nazri organised a really special dinner for us as we were on our honeymoon in the Feringgi grill restaurant - truly memorable.
The room was beautiful and clean and the resort is in a great location, only 5-10 minutes walk from the Long Beach hawker markets and night markets. There is a free shuttle bus to George Town and there is a bus stop right out the front of the hotel. As far as the hotel activities are concerned, My husband used the gym and was very impressed and we also did the jungle trek which we would highly recommend!
I really do think that the resort has something for everyone and I would say do not hesitate to book now!! We are dreaming of the day we can return!!
