“Great Stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014 via mobile

Checked in 2 nights at the Family Suites. Overall it was a great stay. All the staff aim to please. My review would probably be consistent with all the great things you'll read about this place.
I spend most of the out exploring the island, therefore my overall experience is wonderful in regards to the room setting, the staff i encounter, and the morning buffet that are abundant in choice.

My name is Murtada

Very bad when it comes to ur booked room easpecially the deluxe sea view room cuz its actuly pool view room on the 3 thired flower if u booked from booking but if u use their website they would give u one on higher flower. Also i arrived the hotel at 4:10 pm and they told me the housekeeping is cleaning the room and i had to wait for 15 minutes to get to the room. And one more thing is that they gave me a room with twin beds next to each other so they look like a big bed in my honey moon. I talked to them and they offered me another room on 4 fourth flower with a real big bed but it was worse when it comes to the view so i had to refuse it. With a price of 2800 RNG for 3 nights i could get a sweet on the saroundings area and not a small pool view room. Last thing, i told them that im in my honeymoon and they provided a small single pinky rose. By the way i read all these stuff on booking website and on trip advisor but i couldnt beleive it but now i do. I told the reciption that i will give bad rateing cuz of the pool faceing room and she told me no problem with a good smile. I will never consider statying at this hotel again its just the worse experince i have ever faced in all the hotels i have visited.

We were here after Xmas but before New Year. Have stayed before but not in recent years. Difference this time is kids have grown and we no longer needed a kid friendly resort. So this trip we had demands on other aspects of the hotel, and we found it not quite up to scratch.
Check in: lobby was a chaotic mess; at least bell boys helped take the luggage and gave us a tag promptly. If I had not read previous posts would not have known that Golden Circle members check in at the Cool lounge, and would have waited in line only to be told that I could have checked in there.
Check in took a while and rooms not ready, fair enough, so they asked us to wait. When rooms still not ready after 30 mins, they offered us drinks and cakes while we waited, very good.
When we got our room, luggage not yet delivered. After another 30 mins, called bell desk, told they do not have our tags (which we surrender to the check in staff), could we please describe our luggage? Apparently this happens very often and they always have a hard time delivering the bags to the correct guests in a timely manner because check in does not give them the tags !!!!!
F&B: We decided to try the seafood buffet in the cafe on one of the nights. Cost was >Rm130 per person. Food quality was rather poor and tasteless. The crabs were so skinny you spent a lot of time with shell for little meat. There was hardly any fresh fish available, no fresh oysters, and the only lobsters available were cooked with some noodles. Desserts were rather poor quality too. Had to ask staff where we were to get drinks, apparently you had to get them yourselves from the bar although it was free flow. For the same price we could have had a sumptuous seafood dinner outside at any of the other roadside restaurants. No wonder the restaurant was half empty and there was tons of uneaten food left. Try the food court (at night only) about 300-400 meters away. Turn right as you leave the hotel, walk along the roadside, past the Lone PIne hotel. Great local food... good selection and good quality, and this is from someone who knows their Penang food.
Entertainment: The 3 piece band of middle aged men who sang at the lobby bar were OK but not the most entertaining. They came through the buffet to serenade and I was asked what I wanted them to play; some how couldn't think of anything within their range as they sang pretty old stuff I wasn't all that familiar with, so when I said "anything" they sort of sneered at me and said there was no such song. Any way they were more concerned with the Westerners and trying to sell their recorded CDs to them, so didn't bother me any more after.
The band that was playing at the Grill restaurant by the beach were no better. Rather unprofessional group of 3 ladies and 1 keyboard male singers who were badly dressed and behaved as if it was their personal karaoke party. Is that the quality of entertainment we have to tolerate at this resort?
Breakfast as previously described was usually very busy. First day we were diverted to the alternative venue of the Grill and told the selection would be the same. Well it wasn't. Much more limited, not replenished when food ran out and for the rest of our stay we made sure they did not divert us again.
At almost 1200 RM per night, we felt things could have been better. The main attraction of this place is its child friendly environment and its location by the beach, so unless you have kids, this is probably not the place for you. Pools were often too crowded for any swimming, and all the loungers, though plentiful, are taken by 10-11 am and many seem to just have towels placed on them with no bodies. Many people never returned their towels and there was no way of knowing if they were still occupied or not. One day we just removed the towels and "hijacked" a few loungers...so long as there was no other personal property on them.
Hotel could have definitely been better managed, and we will probably not return.

Tip: Try massage at Foo Family for 60 Rm per hour. Turn right at beach, under the Baywatch tower. Enjoy!

Room Tip: If you want to see the sea over the coconut trees, you will need to pay a premium for the seaview ro...

Dear aussiegirl14,

Thank you for sharing your comments with us. We are disappointed that as a Golden Circle member, you were not accorded the proper and rightful Shangri-La experience.

Cool Lounge is a more relaxed way of checking into our resort. We will investigate all comments regarding the luggage muddle with the Front Office. Please be rest assured that this issue will not reoccur.

In terms of food and beverage, we tend to be quite busy during breakfast. Our staff has been trained to respond attentively and to ensure that breakfast and buffet times are as efficient and enjoyable as possible. We will also convey your comments regarding food quality and variety to our Executive Chef so that he can further improve on these aspects.

Our loungers are for all in-house guests. Reserving loungers is certainly not our resort norm and any items left on a lounger after an hour will be put away at our garden towel counter for safe keeping. That way, there will be enough loungers for everyone.

We certainly hope that you will give us the opportunity to improve and that you will return someday to experience a true Shangri-La hospitality.

A great resort with excellent grounds and facilities. Staff are there to please and food quality was very good especially breakfast buffet. Proximity to rasa sayang resort was also a pleasant bonus and use of their facilities was great.

Room Tip: Sea view room gives a great balcony view of beach and grounds.

I was a little wary of Golden Sands resort since it seems more geared to "family friendly" and we do not have children. However, I can say after staying here that couples will enjoy this place as much as families with children. The Shangri-La brand atmosphere and service definitely is noticeable at Golden Sands. The staff was very friendly and efficient. The rooms (ours were facing the hills) were fantastic, very clean/ large and in keeping with an island theme. The daily breakfast was phenomenal (I suggest you try fresh roti canai).

The pools/beach were average, somewhat crowded. I suppose if you want more private/romantic setting, then going to the Shangri-La next door is probably worth it. Overall, I enjoyed this place and would go back.

There are many resorts in the area, and in the end, we picked Golden Sands by Shangri-La.
Pros:
Nice buffet breakfast that last until 11am, nice landscape, friendly and helpful bell staffs (but too bad their area is so small and also very busy), nice pools, many lawn chairs, very comfortable beds. Although the beach is sharing with Rasa Sayang by Shangri-La next door, I actually think that the pool area and the access to the beach are better than Rasa Sayang because the nice part of the beach is directly located outside Golden Sands while you have to walk a bit from Rasa Sayang to get to the nice part.
Cons:
The bathtub and the furnitures are a bit old, the hair conditioner was not good, pools close at 8pm already..., TV channels selection is not very good, front desk staffs are slow...? maybe the computer system/whatever system needs to press too many keys/buttons??

The famous CHI Spa is located at the Rasa Sayang, and everything is done inside individual villa, very exclusive, private, and relaxing. Make the booking earlier if possible, especially if you want to do it in the evening before bed time, it is the peak hours! if it is raining, it is better to arrange for a buggy service to transport you between these two hotels. It is walking distance, but I wouldn't want to walk on the wet ground/get soaked in rain again after getting a nice hampering from the Spa. (We asked for buggy service after our treatments, but unfortunately the buggy was charging its battery... so we walked back on the wet ground to Golden Sands instead of waiting for another 20 mins)

Room Tip: Pay more for the seaview room because it comes with a balcony too! You can enjoy the view while rel...

Dear BigHeadVirus,

We appreciate and want to thank you for sharing your comments with us.

We have taken note of your comments regarding our rooms and bathrooms and we will certainly highlight these issues to our team so that they can focus on ensuring that the rooms remain looking new and pristine at all times.

Our Director of Rooms will also revisit your suggestions to have more TV channels selection. We have also conveyed to our Front Office colleagues regarding service which should be prompt, attentive, efficient and gracious as per our Shangri-La culture.

Once again, thank you very much for your comments which I will personally shared with the team so that we can improve and delight our guests at all the time.
