“Good all round hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2013 via mobile

We stayed for 10 nights in sea facing room. My parents also stayed in sea facing room. Well worth the extra money for the room IMO.
Hotel was good overall, just not quite what I'd expected from a Shang hotel if I'm honest. Outside is immaculate - pool areas are great as are sunbeds etc. inside is very dated and tired. You get on with it cos you're on holiday but having come from the Shang in KL this was a definite drop in standards.
Room was ok. Water and toiletries replenished every day, we had a pull down bed in our room that made it tight for space but again it was ok.
Food - generally good. Breakfast in the main garden cafe was chaos. The first day we went it was anything but relaxing. No cups or plates, everywhere was messy it just wasn't what I expected. Thankfully we found out you could breakfast at sigi's - they didn't have the same variety of choice but it was quieter and more civilised so that was a very happy compromise. The food in sigi's was good of an evening too. Pool side food was reasonably good.
The hotels location is really good. You are right outside the night market and a few minutes walk away from the long beach which is a must for anyone going to bf. brilliant place!!
My husband and our son went on a jet ski hired from the guys on the beach who were very helpful and friendly advising us when the sea was better as our son is only 3. Though at times I found the constant touting for business from some of the others annoying.
The hotel was very busy while we were there so I suppose that was a bit of a negative for us, don't get me wrong I like going to places where other people are just not when it is constantly noisy!
Overall would we return - probably not but don't let that put you off!!

Dear ladies-who-lunch:

Thank you for sharing your recent experience with us in Tripadvisor.

We will definitely share your feedback with our maintenance team so that measures can be taken to ensure the resort remains in tip top condition. We are disappointed to hear that you breakfast experience was not to your expectations. Breakfast can be a very busy time especially when the resort is running a high occupancy. Our staff are required to be extra alert during this time to ensure that breakfast tables are cleared and that service goes smoothly. We will definitely share your feedback with our Food and Beverage team so that they can further improve.

Thank you once again for sharing your stay experience with us. We look forward to welcoming you back so that you can experience the true Shangri-La hospitality.

Warmest regards,

7 nights of bliss. on floor 3 which was very well looked after by the friendly room service. Pool was clean, great staff who did fun activities for all ages. kids 13 and 14 loved it. Did nt do paragliding or doughnut on beach (which sales men lurking at entrance finally understood) all looked a bit un safe, friends 8 year old fell out of doughnut and boat driver was unaware...
Food at hotel way over priced, ate at 'I love you and other food stall place about 100 yards up the road, excellent value, meal for 4 about £10, beer about £3 a big bottle.
Hotel breakfast will be talked about by kids for years to come, everything from waffles to fish head soup, fruit and cereal, fresh cooked bread...everything!!
Would def stay here again!!

Room Tip: Balcony are expensive, worth it only if you are staying in your room a long time, 'hill' roo...

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon for 2 nights while we were in Penang. I am happy to say overall that it was a pleasant stay.

The negatives
-Unfortunately it was peak season so the hotel was full of noise and children which is not ideal for honeymooners but we did not mind too much as we were only staying for 2nights.
-We asked for a sea view room but we were on the 2nd floor so there were lots of palm trees in the way and could not see anything really.

The positives
-The staff were brilliant. When we checked in we were invited to sit down, given a nice refreshing drink and I was handed a rose! We were made to feel very welcome.
-There is a free shuttlebus to outskirts of George Town-very handy, just make sure you book in advance, the morning slots go quickly.
-Many facilites at the hotel. After a week of travelling we had lots of laundry to do. Having a laundrette on site was handy.
-Although its about 25mins away from town the public bus stops right outside the hotel. DO NOT TAKE A TAXI! It is not worth it-they rip you off. The bus is a cheap and safe alternative.

We would stay here again but probably off peak season!

Room Tip: If you ask for a sea facing room, make sure you get a floor that is high up as the trees can obscure...

Dear S M,

Thank you for your review.

Lovely to know that you had an overall pleasant stay at our resort recently.

We would suggest booking in advance for your next trip as the higher sea facing rooms have better views of the sea. Please contact our resort directly as we would be pleased to assist.

It is always a pleasure having you stay with us during your honeymoon and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

We were in 2 minds about booking the Golden Sands having read previous reviews, but we the hotel is great with service that is better than some 5 star hotels we have stayed in.
We stayed for 10 nights - we took a hill facing room which was very good and view was OK. We took someone else's advice and spent the money we saved on the room upgrade at the bar instead! Room was always very clean and presented well.
There is a nice lawn area for sunbathing with several pools. We didn't go to the beach much but we were close enough to be able to hear the waves as they hit the shore which is very relaxing in itself. There are people selling Water sports, etc on beach but they weren't annoying. There is a massage place on the beach in front of the hotel which gives the best massage for £12 for an hour - unbelievably good...
We did several trips - KL in a day, Orangutan sanctuary, Kek-Lok temple & went around Georgetown. All were really interesting...
Breakfast has a huge range of food but very busy so be warned.
Service by all of the hotel employees was exceptional - all very polite and friendly.
The hotel gives lots of extras that you don't consider necessarily when booking but can add up over a period of time - free water in room, Wifi, breakfast, place to shower when you have a late check out. We were expecting the final bill to be at least double what we finally paid (based on previous holidays) so were very pleasantly surprised.
Penang was a great holiday destination and we will be back for sure

we stayed in the Golden Sands Resort Penang last year. we had a delux sea view room, which was so nice. we did plan to take the hill facing room but after looking on trip advisor decided to upgrade, it was worth the addition cost.
The staff are very helpful and the hotel is very clean. The pools are also cleaned every day.
It is very expensive to eat in the hotel, but the food is good.
There are many places to eat within walking distance of the hotel.

Room Tip: go with the best you can afford - sea facing rooms are worth the extra cost
