i stay at the VIC few nights a month as i have business in the Valley. undoubtedly the best place to stay - a combination of comfort, cost, facilities , size of rooms, restaurant and many more. Ernest and his staff make every guest feel 110% welcome and they attend to every request no matter how big or small.

true small town hospitality!

Room Tip: the front facing rooms are bigger with big balcony facing and mountain view. the pool rooms are quie...

We spent two nights at the Victorian 1906 in early July. The days were crisp and clear and the welcome we received from Earnst and later the other members of the staff, was warm and welcoming. A very comfortable stay and with excellent dining at the hotel ensured that we would return. The hotel is centrally situated which is great if you want to walk about this pretty town. Get the walking map from the Information center two blocks down from the hotel. The inner courtyard was sheltered and provided an area to have a snack at lunch or tea in the afternoon.
There were not many guests but being a small hotel even if full would not be crowded. The rooms were large and spacious. A very pleasant stay all in all.

Room Tip: The upper rooms that face the road have lovely views over the town to the surrounding mountains. The...

In December 2011 my wife and I had a really enjoyable 2 night stay at the Vic Hotel. The Vic Hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Montagu and within walking distance of most of the tourist attractions. Secure parking is available if you want to leave your Vehicle behind and go exploring. We found our room spacious and well appointed with a beautiful view of the mountain. Dinner and breakfast was very enjoyable and even my wife who is a vegetarian had a wide variety to chose from. It could also be that Rosa who is running the kitchen is not shy to treat the guests to their every wish. Ernest is the perfect host and will not leave one stone unturned to make guest feel welcome and at home even if it means to get up at 04h00 to make coffee and say goodbye.
This establishment definitely deserves every star awarded.

We had a really enjoyable 3 night stay at the victorian 1906 hotel.
When we arrived and we were assisted by Ernest, who with his team went out of their way to make sure we felt comfortable.
The rooms are very spacious, clean and well appointed. The bed especially, was cozy and comfortable.
The whole experience was amazing from the start to finish and Ernest was most friendly and helpful the whole time.
We would definitely recommend it!

If you’re expecting a dusty old building with Victorian furniture, you are in for a surprise. It won’t be because we’ll tell you that the hotel has been renovated into a contemporary property with Victorian touches. In the center of the hotel is a courtyard with a small – very small – pool, but good enough to sit around and have a drink. If it is hot, you can sit in the pool but forget laps.

Rooms are small but adequate for a short visit. There is no real sitting area and – once again – lights are inadequate for reading. There is a large lobby with seats. The manager is breathless with enthusiasm about Montagu and will point out places to visit. But still, it is a tiny city which provides a nice stop on the way to some place else. If you are a rock climber, you’ll be in heaven. The town will remind people from North America of an old western town.

Our room was on the main floor so we didn’t have to climb stairs. There is a second floor and note there is no lift. Rooms in the front have access to balconies. The manager said it was “quieter” in the back but since there isn’t much traffic in Montagu, we’re not sure noise is a factor! Also, there is a secure parking area.

There are a few restaurants in town (everything is within walking distance), including Serbian cuisine. We ate in the hotel. It was OK, but perhaps we should have gone out.

We were the only people in the hotel that night which made it eerie. A continental breakfast is provided and the hot portion comes with an additional charge.

Kudos to the hotel for providing decent coffee in the room – a French press! All the other places we stayed had instant coffee (We brought our own Starbuck’s VIA coffees as they are stronger and closer to good coffee.)

There also are many wineries nearby, so it is possible to do a few without driving too far.

Having had a very frustrating time with the lack of wheelchair accessible hotels on our trip to South Africa, it was a delight to spend a night at the Victorian 1906 where Ernest and his staff went out of their way to make our stay extremely comfortable and enjoyable. Our rooms were delightful and Ernest even put up a grab handle and moved things around to make the room easier for my son who is a wheelchair user. Thank you to Ernest and his staff for a great stay.

We booked for 2 nights and were upgraded to a wonderful room with its own balcony. We had a delighted stay. The service was excellent, the room very comfortable and the breakfast super. Thank you Ernest, we enjoyed our stay very much.
