“A place of enchantment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2009

Montagu Vines is a magical place, a charming Colonial-style house and garden, set between its own vineyard and the rocky cliff of the nearby hills. The location is truly beautiful, yet it stands so close to the centre of the small, elegant town of Montagu, within easy walking distance of all services (including the excellent restaurant Jessica's, mentioned by other visitors).

Richard and Clare are the most welcoming and caring hosts. Our room, though not all that large, was so pretty and comfortable - and if the weather had treated us more kindly we would have delighted in the adjoining verandah. The garden, filled with flowers and scent and complete with leopard tortoise, is the perfect place for relaxation. We could happily have stayed for days.

While in Montagu, don't miss the extraordinary 'bird tree', as large a concentration of nesting birds - including several varieties of ibis, heron and egret, not to mention weaver birds and others - as you will ever see anywhere in the world.

South Africa is blessed with many great guesthouses, but this one comes with just about every ingredient you could wish for. Beautiful rooms, quiet, lovely garden and views, great, healthy breakfasts, welcoming, friendly, helpful hosts - thanks Richard and Claire - and ...... it's own vineyard for your own personal use. And if that isn't enough Montagu has a good range of fantastic restaurants - Jessica's and Templeton's for example - a nice small town feel, good walks and fantastic roads for motorbikes. I can't think of anything to fault!

Richard was a delightul host, offering an honesty bar along with a complimentary carafe of his very own wine - Beverley Dawn chenin blanc, totally wonderful in case you were wondering!
Our room was shaded and overlooking a delightful garden and the vineyard. The plunge pool or "cuddle puddle" would be most welcome in the high summer when the temperature can reach the upper 30s for days at a time.
We were recommended a fabulous restaurant, Jessica's, within walking distance where we had the most amazing chicken and prawn curry washed down with yet more Beverley Dawn.
Wish we could have spent longer in Montagu - a beautiful haven in the winelands.

Montagu Vines was our "base camp" for exploring Montagu and the Breede River Valley (and wonderful wineries!) during a three-week visit to Africa. Richard and staff have created one of the finest accommodations in South Africa. Rooms are spacious, private and smartly-furnished. Garden and environs are gorgeous. Beverages and breakfast are not to be exceeded by even the finest 5-star resorts. The conclusion: Montagu Vines is the only property to consider if your travel plans bring you to the Montagu area. And if your travel plans do not include Montagu, please consider adding it to your itinerary if only for the sake of staying at Montagu Vines!

Perfect place to stop on the wine route. We were greeted by Richard at the door with a chilled bottle of his delicious Chenin Blanc in the terrace with amazing views of the countryside and mountains - talk about a great welcome drink! Our cosy country styled rooms were in the main house and thoughtfully decorated. There was some noise from other rooms but it was be expected in our friends snoring next door and with the quiet surroundings.

Richard and his staff were friendly and very attentive - his dinner recommendation was spot on and even made bookings for us that evening. We had thoroughly enjoyed our stay with him and his lovely home. I am already missing the lovely scrambled eggs from breakfast and Tessie, the resident cocker spaniel.

The only regret we have is that we could only stay the one night at Montagu Vines, our stay was fantastic in every way and there is nothing that I can really add to the almost perfect reviews already posted, only that this place is a Gem in Paradise, and when you depart you will feel relaxed and refreshed to continue on with your journey, continue with the good work Richard and Staff.

Unfortunately we only stayed for 1 night while exploring route 62. We were welcomed by the owner Richard, a caraf of wine, the resident "wise owls" and the cat that made itself comfortable on my lap. Made us feel at home. We stayed in room 6 which was very comfortable and the breakfast was good. We bought a case of wine produced from the grapes grown on the farm, only a few bottles left, so we will have to return to stock up. The recommendation by Richard of Jessicas for dinner, a 15/20 min walk was excellent. We visited the wine farms that Richard suggested for the next day and enjoyed all the stops and ended up with a boot full of wine. I enjoyed Van Looveren & Springfield. We will be back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Montagu Vines is situated in the historic conservation area of Montagu. The main farmhouse was built between 1900 and 1910 and reflects the early Victorian influenced Karoo style farmhouse of that period. The 6 Garden rooms and 3 Farm House Rooms overlook the newly planted Olive Grove and compliment the stately main house. Following the damage to the vines from the floods of November 2008 the vineyard was removed in 2010 and replanted with an olive grove. We offer our guests a taste of old- fashioned comfort and luxury in the town of Montagu on the world famous "Route 62". You can relax in the splash pool set in the tranquil gardens with magnificent old oak and milkwood trees. Alternatively, you could lounge on the lawns enjoying the glorious views of the surrounding mountains whilst sipping a glass of Chenin Blanc. Montagu Vines is just a stroll away from the centre of Montagu with its amenities that cater for all tastes and interests. There are restaurants, bistros, historic churches and tranquil gardens for the visitor to enjoy. Montagu Vines is the perfect place for those intimate weekends, birthdays, and anniversaries or as a stopover whilst discovering "Route 62" and all it has to offer. You may be lucky and see the "resident" owls perched in the old oak tree or meet one of the big tortoises in the vineyard that visit from the adjacent nature reserve. ... more   less
