My wife and I traveled to St. Barth's from June 10-16 2012. Though this was just at the start of the low season, here were the highlights of traveling at this time: bugs were not as bad as I expected, we only saw a handful of mosquitoes; obviously nightly hotel prices are cheaper; very easy to get reservations at any restaurant on any night; afternoon high temps weren't too hot yet, definitely bearable; and with their being a lot less tourists on the island, all the hotels and restaurants treat you like celebrities. And this was definitely our experience at Le Toiny! Getting to St Barth's, we had some travel difficulties -- a delayed flight into Miami made us miss our connection to St. Maarten. We were put on a different airline that arrived into St. Maarten an hour later, but then this would make us miss our flight on St. Barth's Commuter. But one call to the concierge Fabian at Le Toiny and everything was handled! And what makes that even more impressive and appreciated was that it was a Sunday and the customer service desk at St. Barth's Commuter was closed. Our driver, David, was extremely helpful, he went far and above what you should expect from a driver -- he had lots of helpful tips for us about the island, and even showed us how to use everything in the room. The massage we had as part of our package was heavenly -- my wife said it was the best massage she's ever had, and I agree! The Smart Car we had included in our package was fun and interesting as well, definitely added to the experience. Just beware that they have a hard time getting up all the steep hills. They fit really well on the narrow roads though. We stayed in Villa 5, and it was perfect. It was close to the end of the property, so very private and very close to the nature preserve hillside where we could watch goats hop around the hills. Of course, the red flag you can put up at your villa gate ensures your privacy as well. We did get a call twice from room service during afternoon naps when our flag was up to ask what time they could turn down the room, that was the only negative comment I had about the entire week and it wasn't a major issue. The pool was always clean and a very comfortable, not too hot and not too cold temperature. Breakfast every morning brought to your pool deck was a wonderfully relaxing way to start the day and the homemade jams were delicious! And the room was always turned down when you're away for dinner, so that was always nice to return to. The iPod dock in the room, called a "George", had a fun and relaxing selection of music -- we had that on the whole week, never once turned on the TV. The restaurant, Le Gaiac, was amazing -- the nicest dinner we had the whole week. We took pictures of the food it was so beautifully presented. Other restaurants we recommend include Bonito and Eden Rocks. The best cocktails we had all week were at Bonito.
Save yourself the hassle of getting a shady taxi through the slums of St. Maarten though by taking the St. Barth's Commuter plane and avoiding the ferry boats. Our return trip to St. Maarten on the Voyager shuttle was delayed by an hour, the cabin was not air conditioned as advertised, and then there we waited for a cab to arrive for over an hour at the marina. The cab wound up being an non-air conditioned minivan and we arrived at the St. Maarten airport only 45 minutes before our flight, so we very nearly missed it. The St. Barth's Commuter airline was the way to go -- prices are comparable as well between the flight and the ferry.
To wrap it up, we plan to return to Le Toiny in the future for maybe our 5 or 10 year anniversary -- so there's no greater compliment or review than saying we can't wait to go back in the future. Thanks again to all the hotel staff, you made our honeymoon truly lovely!
