My husband and I recently spent five amazing days at this very romantic, relaxing, luxury resort and we experienced a holiday we will talk about for years. The managers Tish and Owen have created a piece of MAGIC in Vanuatu. The privacy, clean modern rooms, amazing food, friendly staff, immaculately neat grounds and the overall feeling of the whole resort, make this the perfect couple getaway.
Vanuatu is only a 2hr flight from Brisbane and this is something they should capitalise on, as there are not many places from Australia where you can be in such beautiful weather, sandy beaches and crystal clear waters in such a short time. We only had a few days to have our first child free holiday in 11 years and the distance to Vanuatu appealed to us. We flew Pacific Blue on the way there and Air Vanuatu on the return trip to accommodate our restricted times. Both were great flights however we felt the service and staff on Air Vanuatu were better. I believe there is a 4hr direct flight from Melbourne which we will take next time we go.
The transfer from the plane was handled very professionally by Adventures in Paradise and we were at the resort in 40mins. We were greeted by staff who took our baggage and escorted us to the main building. We were warmly welcomed and given a cool tropical drink. We were given a short tour and explanation of how the resort runs. We were then taken to our villa. We were in Villa 16 and this we feel the best location in the resort. We overlooked the beach and we were far enough away from the main building. Mind you this resort is very quiet and you never have to worry about noise. With only 17 bungalows sometimes you have the whole place to yourself when people are out exploring. The villa was no surprise which is a bonus; they looked exactly as the photos portrayed! They were well set out to capture the wonderful view, modern, clean and tasteful. We booked a deluxe waterfront villa which had its own private deck with plunge pool and swinging day bed. It was wonderful to sit and relax in the plunge pool whenever you felt like it or lay and read on the day bed.
Tish and Owen run a tight ship at The Havannah. The staff keep the grounds very neat and tidy and this adds to the feel of luxury. The food at the Hotel was top class. Vanuatu with its French History is all about quality food. The French cook on site created amazing meals, incorporating local delicacies. We only ate at the resort and enjoyed every single meal. If you stayed here longer venturing into town for lunch would add more variety. The new main pool area looks amazing and is so quiet. Every time we swam there we were the only people in the pool and the resort was fully occupied. The pool bar wasn’t open often but you only have to ask. Tish stated whatever you need just ask.
Dining on the beach was so romantic (3 per night) with the bonfire each night and if you want it even more romantic book dinner on the private jetty, for one couple only with a glass bottom, so you can see all the fish!
The Havannah is a 40min trip from Port Vila town centre and the resort offer a transfer every morning at 10am and return trip at 4pm. They also recommend a taxi service that costs about $25. We didn’t do much but truly relax as we were only there for a few days. However we did visit the Cascade Falls which were beautiful. It took 20min to walk to the top (through some water) and it was so refreshing to swim in the fresh water under the waterfall. My tip to anyone doing this is wear rock shoes. Everyone else was and it made it so much easier. Rock shoes are a must on the coral beaches and the resort provide these complimentary in their equipment shed. In that shed they also supply snorkelling equipment, fishing gear, wetsuits etc. While we were there Tish and Owen held a drinks night on the beach. Tish welcomed everyone and explained that at The Havannah there is no need to check in equipment or towels etc., the items are just there to be used.
A must do for anyone travelling here is to book a trip out snorkelling with James from Kustom Divers. We have scuba dived and snorkelled in many places and this was trip was by far our best ever! We were taken out on our own in a small boat to what I can only describe as a tropical garden. It was like being dropped into an aquarium. The water was crystal clear and teaming with fish and we even saw a turtle which made our day. James knew exactly what to do to make this the experience of a life time. For only $25 each it was more than worth the money. This trip is for beginners to the experienced.
We didn’t exchange any money at the airport which I’d recommend you do as there are no facilities at the resort; however everything we did accepted Australian dollars.
Vanuatu is not a cheap destination like Bali or Thailand but if you are after something close to Australia with gorgeous beaches, amazing food and perfect weather then it’s the place to visit. If you can afford to stay at The Havannah you will not be disappointed. Read the reviews and considering how small this resort is and the small number of people writing reviews, they should easily be number one!
