Rang just before xmas to book a table for Sunday lunch between Xmas and New Year, and were delighted when we were told they could do a table for 4 but only at 1.30, as they needed to stagger times for the kitchen. Said we would check with our friends and call right back. When we rang back 20 mins later, they said they didn't have a table and couldn't possibly fit us in at any time, despite my husbands protestations that 20 minutes before they did have a table. Rang our friends, said we would arrange something else, put the phone down and the DoC rang us and said as they had said we could have a table they would fit us in by moving the sofa near the fireplace but we would have to get there at 12.30. Great!
Arrived on the day just before 12.30, our friends already there sitting on the sofa by the fire with a drink, and were told our table was in the far corner. We were given menus to choose starters 'as time was tight', which we did, and ordered a bottle of wine for the table, from which my husband and I had a glass each. We moved to our table early, thinking we were helping the kitchen flow, so must have sat down by about 12.50. A brief wait before starters arrived, then another small wait, so probably at about 1.30 an enormous roast appeared with 2 big bowls of veg. At 1.45, when we were just at the 'ooh, yes, just one more potato and a couple of slices of meat please' stage, the waitress came over and said 'how are you doing'- lovely thanks. Then ....'because you know you've got to be off this table at 2pm'. Er, NO - we did NOT know that!!! She said ' you were told at the time of booking'. NO - we would NEVER have driven, each of us for an hour each way, us from the coast, our friends from Surrey, to bolt down lunch in less than an hour an a half. Oh, she said - you should have been told. We assured her we weren't told and she apologised, but we had to finish eating and vacate the table anyway and were told we could move by the fire to have our dessert - 4 people, 4 glasses, 4 puddings, no table, a 2 seater sofa, a chair and a stool ?!!? We didn't bother, and as my husband was paying the bill (and complaining) the waitress said what can i do - my husband suggested they take the drinks off the bill, so she checked with someone, and they took off.... the first round of drinks, but that didn't include the bottle of wine, so just one beer and one glass of wine. No I'm not kidding. Thats how much our custom was valued at. Which is a shame - we moved to the coast from Surrey, and thought we had found the perfect halfway point to meet up with friends and family. My husband rang the owner a few days later, who said he was fully aware at the time, busy kitchen, had been without power for a couple of days, blah blah blah, but no further attempt to recompense us in any way. Now, we're not greedy, thats not what this is about. If someone had said at the time look, we messed up, have your drinks on us now but please come back another time and we will make it up to you, you can have free main courses or something, we would have given them another shot. But we just didn't feel valued at all and won't be back.
