“Just fab!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2013 via mobile

How can a place so far from anywhere get such a) attractive and b) attentive staff to serve such delicious food? Ok - it's a tad poncy, but what you get is great and in surroundings that are hard to beat

“Great Food, Great Views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

We were invited to dine here although it is an hours drive for us but we were definitely NOT disappointed, To get the most from our evening we started with a drink at the front in a seated canopy area, moving to the back of the restaurant on the viewing deck. The furniture was comfortable and on a sunny warm evening this would have been a perfect place to sit all night. But we were soon warmed by the arrival of a delicious amuse bouche. Once our meal was ready, we moved into the dining room where the tables are nicely positioned so that we couldn't be overheard or knocked against by serving staff. The waitresses were all very friendly and welcoming, smiled and showed tolerance when we dithered about our menu choices.

The food was scrummy. Not too many choices which I love but not as much as I loved my Lobster and Crab Thermidor. So yummy........

My only gripe (and this was my choice) I chose the Eton Mess to follow which was too sweet for me.

We will return with other 'virgin' guests. Absolutely.

Thank you for a lovely evening.

“Drink, lunch or dinner, go visit the Duke”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

I am very fortunate to be local to this great pub/restaurant. Sit outside in the numerous spaces and tables. Take you dog and sit in the pub or sit out the back in the lovely dining room. Food never fails to deliver. Love it!

“Excellent. At last”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

I’ve known the Duke on and off for about 50 years. After many false starts and changes of management it appears, at last, to have sorted itself out. The result is excellent. The fine location that it has always been but now they’ve added a ‘proper’ restaurant which reminded me of the Petersham Nurseries without the earth floor. Informal but attentive service. A mains only menu but you can order starter sized portions. A reasonable spread of possibilities on the menu but Cuisine Minceur it isn’t. Nor is it quite Michelin Star but getting on that way. Go hungry, you get lots. But the quality is excellent, the wine list is good and the desserts are superb. We went mid-week and it was fairly full; I suspect that it gets stressed at weekends. Not cheap but well worth it; they have to make a living. Good for them.

“My preferred local for entertaining”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We are extremely fortunate to have such a good pub and restaurant within a mile or so. A XVth century inn with traditional bars and a converted barn restaurant, tucked away on a hillside with views of Blackdown and the vale of Fernhurst, serving excellent food - what more could one ask for to entertain friends. Drop in casually for drinks but book well ahead for the restaurant.
