“So much improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

I haven't been for years as I remember it as very run down. I was pleasantly surprised at how much has been upgraded. Now a great tourist attraction.

“Sad state”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

The place desperately needs a makeover. I was actually embarrassed when my partner and I took his parents there.

Not much to see - there are very few specimens. The only positive really, was seeing a non-native axolotl for the fist time.

“Great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

As said in other comments, in this park, you can really see the kiwi. The feeding time of kiwis at 1:30 is very interesting. I missed the feeding time of keas so I can't tell how good it is. I really enjoyed to see all the birds and some other rares animals (axolotl and some lizards). The visit definitely woth the money you put in it. I just regret the lack of explanations in general (except for the kiwis feeding time when the feeder explane really nicely the general behavior of kiwis).

“Best sighting in 40years”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2012

Forget the zoo's where you see a shadow of a bird, here you really see a kiwi. Recommend you visit at 1.30 feeding time. We enjoyed seeing all other birds and kids loved the falcon that swooped down as they nearer his cage. worth a visit.

“Kiwi Watch is an awesome experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

We arrived at 6.30pm for the nocturnal Kiwi Watch with relatively subdued expectations as Kiwi birds are known to be notoriously shy creatures. Nevertheless, we were hopeful for a glimpse of these feathered beasts.
We were taken into two different sets of enclosures. One involved climbing down into a bunker or "hide" that allowed for a close-up ground-level view of two enclosures. Food was placed in a bowl and we waited for the birds to rise to the bait. It took more than an hour before there was a sighting, however we were told this was taking longer than usual as the conditions (colder, with loud PA noises coming from the netball club nearby) were not prime. A kiwi stealthily stole past, gobbled up a few mouthfuls of the feed, then scampered off again. We were thrilled.
The second set of enclosures yielded much greater interaction with a kiwi. Tasman, a female Great Spotted, behaved similarly to a domestic pet, running inexhaustibly up and down the fence-line when called out to. She was very open to human interaction, and we were later told that she will even sometimes come out during the day. It was a bewildering and wonderful experience to be so close to what has always been my boyfriend's favourite animal.
Our guide, Chris, was very warm and enthusiastic, especially for a volunteer (the event is run through a roster of volunteers) and made the event much more enjoyable. He even provided tea and coffee as we waited in the bunker at the first set of enclosures!
Overall, a great experience that exceeded our expectations and entirely worth the time and money. Recommended to kiwi enthusiasts!
