“WONDERFUL place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

This place is so charming and it is perfect. I wish we could have spent more than one night here. Rachel and Angus are fabulous. We had corn on the cob we wanted to cook but there was no pot large enough in the cottage. We requested a larger pot and within minutes, Angus brought us a larger pot that worked great. Angus gave us so many pointers on what to do in the area. We went to the area of course for the glow worms. Angus told us about the Natural Arch in the area. We went here at night and all we can say is WOW. It was the BEST glow worm experience we had. Since we did this on our own, we were not hurried and it was free.

We didn't expect that this place is kinda far from the village itself. It's about ~15mins drive time from town. Rachel and Angus welcomed us and showed us around the cottage, although it was raining, they're such a great host. They let us borrow their umbrella when we went to the village.
The view from the top of the hill (where the cottages are) is supposedly amazing, but since it was raining and cloudy when we were there, we couldn't see it clearly. We also didn't get to checkout their own gloworm cave they have... again, thanks to the rain!
The cabin is a good size for a couple. I imagine it would be kinda crowded if there are 2 more people (or kids) with you, although there 2 more single beds at the "attic". It has what you need to prepare your own continental breakfast. The bathroom is OUTSIDE of the cabin, which normally would be ok for me, but since it was raining non-stop while we were there, it was kinda inconvenient.

Room Tip: The cottage on the left side (as you're facing the cottages), I think has better view.

What a cute place to spend time in the Waitomo area. First of all, this region is a must visit if you are coming to New Zealand. It is beautiful both above ground and below. And, if you come to this area, you will not find a better local experience than Te Tiro. The cabins are so cute, and they are on the neatest little farm on top of a large hill with views for miles. It is how you dream of experiencing a country. And the owners are fantastic. Locals who grew up in the area, have hospitality naturally flowing from them, and stories that you will tell all of your friends back home. The guest book was filled with accolades from people who came from all over the world, gushing about how great of a time they had. I only wish we had stayed longer.

Room Tip: Each cabin is identical, so just book it and get there.

What an amazing place, in one word "stunning". On arrival as Rachel and Angus were not there, a note was left on the gate welcoming us and letting us know what cabin we were in. The views are to die for, the cabins are beautiful. The continental breakfast supplied was perfect. We took a walk down to Dabchick pond. Sadly we didn't get to meet Rachel but Angus was so welcoming and full of local knowledge. We had 2 young children with us (aged 3 and 5) and Angus let them have the run of his own back garden. The gloworm grotto at the end of the path was out of this world, we could hardly believe that we got to see gloworms up close. The head torches supplied were great. Our kids were amazed by it all. Angus informed us about the MANGAPOHUE NATURAL BRIDGE....don't miss it - a natural wonder which has to be seen. Also check out the MAROKOPA FALLS...again stunning. Without a doubt Te Tiro is one of the nicest place I have ever stayed in and when we return to NZ we will visit again but next time will stay for longer.

Our first night in NZ, my wife and I booked here -- what a great first impression of a wonderful country! The cozy cabins atop the hill provide an excellent panoramic view and sunrise is not to be missed. The glowworm grotto is a short walk downhill and should also not be missed.

While we didn't get to see Rach, Angus was more than friendly (and a huge Lord of the Rings fan!). My wife and I definitely plan to stay here again should we ever be so fortunate to visit NZ again.

Unique - our own log cabin atop a hill with views forever - even the fog in the morning was magical with just the tips of trees visible - cosy despite the time of year- the makings of a very nice continental breakfast provided - a bank of glow worms just down the path in the bush (head lamps provided for your night time walk) Two beds above in the loft if you wish to share - very friendly informative hosts - Rachel later guided us through Ruakuri Cave. Loved it.

Ti Tiro was one of our favorites on our month long holiday in NZ. Rachael and her husband know hospitality, and have created a very unique and private environment to accommodate the lucky few that get to stay here. We were really fortunate to be the only ones staying with them the one night we were there. There are two accommodations that can house up to five people. The structure in the middle of the accommodations is the bathroom. We thought the cabin furthest away from the entry gate afforded the best views. We brought our own food and had a great dinner (with a good bottle of wine) on the porch overlooking a view that must have been 80k in distance. If the weather conditions are favorable, walk out in back of the cabin and enjoy a beautiful view and fantastic sunset.
We looked at the website several times, but didn't appreciate the fact that they have their own glowworm viewing arena. It was almost spiritual to walk down to into their sinkhole and experience an entire wall of glowworms. We stayed down there for an hour in total silence.
Using the bathroom at night is fun. You have to walk outside to get to it. We had a clear night, with no moon, so the stars were fantastic. Bring a flashlight, or use the headlamps provided by Rachael. Don't be surprised if you see a possum (squashem's in Kiwi terms) running around on the deck. (They are harmless and want to get out of your way.)
The breakfast was wonderful and the accommodations were first class and very romantic. Enjoy...
