“Unique accommodation in Waitomo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2014

If you are looking for somewhere a little different, then this is the place for you! We had read about Woodlyn Park on Trip Advisor, and were keen to stay in the Hobbit Holes, however, as they were booked, we were offered the Captain’s Unit of the Waitanic, a converted WW2 patrol boat. We were not disappointed as the unit was a great choice.

The unit was across three levels; The upper floor had a small but well equipped kitchen and large dining room, a small bathroom, and a balcony offering great view of the surroundings. The middle floor housed the master bedroom, with a large deck. The lower level housed two more bedrooms and large bathroom. It was a perfect arrangement for our family of five, with each of the teenagers having plenty of space. All the rooms were spotlessly clean.

The park is not within walking distance to any shops or restaurants; you will need to drive back into the village for these. We corresponded with Nicky when making arrangements to stay here, and she was extremely helpful with our questions about things to do in and around Waitomo. She was also very helpful upon our arrival at Woodlyn Park. She did seem to be the only staff member around, though.

Wi-Fi is not available at the unit, but is able to be accessed at the main reception area. There was also a problem with mosquitos, as there were no screens on the windows, we had to shut them to keep the mozzies and flies out. Although the park could do with a bit of a spruce up – cleaning outdoor furniture, boat deck, painting, gardens needing some maintenance etc, we did have an enjoyable night here. If you are looking for a five star hotel, forget this place, but if quirky and unique is more your style, check it out.

We were excited to stay here in the hobbit motel but after being there for a while realised it wasn't quite as good as we thought. This was the first place I booked when arranging my holiday (7 months in advance) knowing they have only 2 hobbit hole motel rooms. My family are Lord of The Rings fans so it is fun to stay in a hobbit hole but there were Mosquitos galore in the evening! No screens on the round hobbit windows and even though they were only open a fraction insects got in. Perhaps we should have closed the windows much earlier.
On the plus side it is located in a beautiful place with lovely views of the area, chickens with their chicks were on the property. I had a load of washing to do and the lady said the machine wouldn't be free for a few hours and offered to do it for me, for free, which was really kind. I picked it up later that afternoon from her before we went out to dinner in town (short 3 mins drive).
They have a plane and a ship and the hobbit holes rooms so a fun place for the kids.
Not really worth the $280au I paid for one night though.

This is the second time I have stayed here.... It is an awesome place... my brother used to bring my boys here when there was jet boats also... so far we have stayed in Number 3 and 5 of the Waitanic...I found the place to be very clean and everything we need was there...tho both times we only stayed for one night. Haven't had the chance to see the shows yet, but they look like they would be awesome.

You forward an exorbitant amount of money through the travel agency for reservations at Woodlyn Park. At some point, you enthusiastically insist: "I want to stay three nights in the hobbit-hole. I came to New Zealand to re-enact the Lord of the Rings, and by hell, that means I'll eat, sleep, and breathe Tolkien. No exceptions!"

Lo and behold, the little motel room is yours, and only yours, for a number of nights. You revel at the circular windows and turf roofs that form the hobbit-hole. Of course, not a dirty, run-down sort of place at all, for the price, as you may proclaim, your copy of 'The Hobbit' held high: "It is a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort!" Pictures are taken. You marvel at the windows again for a little while one evening of your stay, almost lost in its perfect curvature. You do this, partly to justify the incredible price you have spent to be allowed in the room, to claim it.

You leave after a number of days. It does not occur to you that you paid a lot of money for a room of average quality, shaped in the form of a house depicted in a film, and some books. Photographs from your experience in cheap timber frames line the walls, but none of them portray the hobbit-hole from Woodlyn Park; after all, there were mountains to be conquered, caves to be explored, distances to travel. These things were far more memorable, and perhaps enshrined your unreasonable obsession with Tolkien far more greatly.

Maybe, the next time you want to spend a lot of money on a Tolkien-related venture in New Zealand, you should ask yourself: "Who is the one justifying the purchase: me, or Bilbo?"

Room Tip: The hobbit-hole is nice. Everything is made out of wood, ostensibly because a real Hobbit would have...

A nice stay, the unit in the ship very clean. Would have been nice if the lightbulbs had been checked as more than half didnt work. The receptionist seemed to be new to the job, a grassed area for the kids to run on or for a picnic area would be nice, ramp to the boat in need of repair. That said unique accommodation amazing idea, very pricey however and very little to do in the waitomo caves area.

I booked the hobbit hotel room for one night during our honeymoon as my partner is a huge lord of the rings fan...upon arriving we were checked in by a pleasant lady as Billy had gone away she explained she had only been working there for a couple of weeks so unfortunately we didn't get a lot of info on the property but she was kind enough to give us a map of the local area. The outside of the hobbit hotel was great especially the huge tree right in the middle of the 2 rooms - as we were staying on a weeknight we had the entire property all to ourselves it was lovely and quiet and even if others were staying the rooms are far enough away from each other to have your own private space. The bathroom is quite basic but the bed was comfy & it was great having the kitchenette as well. At $250 per night it is very pricey as a one off it was a good experience but we thought that a continental breakfast would have been included.

Room Tip: Having Hobbit hotel room #2 meant a private parking space right next to the rooms door which was gre...

While it had never been a specific item on my (forever lengthening) bucket list, the idea of sleeping in a plane seemed to me an experience not to be missed. When I read about the motel in the NZ Herald a couple of weeks ago, and it's impending sale, I decided to take a small road trip for a couple of days with my girlfriend and visit Woodlyn Park.
We arrived early in the evening on the Monday and were greeted by the inimitable Billy Black, fresh off the farm. He quickly checked us in, and gave us the lay of the land. The purpose of our visit was to stay in the plane, and caving was not particularly on the agenda. Billy gave us direction to a few short walks that gave a good sense of a caving experience, without the extravagant cost.
The plane itself is absolutely fantastic; a fully kitted-out motel room with a kitchenette, tidily furnished and very clean, the space has been very well utilised. We stayed in the cockpit unit, because, why not!? When they said on the phone that it still contained much of the original flight deck, I was sold. And you can even sleep in the cockpit next to the engineer's panels! It was all rather a bit too much for the boy in me and I had to retire downstairs for a breath of cool air. Which, by chance, is made easy with the modern air-conditioning unit installed!
The motel is spread over a large area and is out in the countryside, so noise should not pose a problem. There is a very friendly white-fluffy donkey that lives in the field next to the ship.
Back in the plane, the visitors book is a good read if you have a moment. Full of past tenants waxing poetical about their experiences, some of them very creatively—amazing how a piece of technology can (literally) give wings to the imagination.
