“If you can only do one cave at Waitomo do this one.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2013

We did the 3 caves and all had their own magic, but if you can only do one or need wheelchair access, do this one. There are clearly defined areas where you can and cannot take photos, the no photo (blue lights) are where the cave has glow worms or intersects with the black water rafting. The cave has a massive variety of formations and lots of glow-worms (but not as many as the glow-worm cave). The cave is enormous in length and size of the chambers. Guides are really friendly and helpful.

“Very Impressive Business Investment in Ruakuri!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

According to our guide, in 2005, a huge, $6.5 million investment went into the Ruakuri Cave, to install impressive, safe, high-quality metal boardwalks throughout the cave network. This infrastructure improvement allowed for excellent views of the cave's waterfalls, rivers, blackwater rafting/caving opportunities, and the glowworms themselves!

The tour itself was about 1.5 hours long and the guide was quite knowledgeable about the the cave system.

Part of the excitement of the whole cave experience was entering the cave via the 100+ foot drop - a circular passageway around the edge of the cave tunnel. From there, things only got better!

“Awesome and then some.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Starting with the amazing spiral staircase, an outstanding guide and simply the best cave ever, it's a must. Do not be tempted to do the combo, just go straight for this one, the others simply cannot compete!

“Great Bush Walk Hundreds of Glow-worms”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

This cave is a short drive from Waitomo Caves. The trail to the cave is well maintained although there are a lot of stairs to get to the viewing platform inside the cave. We did the cave loop during the day and then went back after dark. To see glow-worms you don't need to go all the way to the cave. When you enter the trail you go about 100 meters before you go over a bridge. Just after the bridge the trail branches. You want to take the trail to the right and you will come to a second bridge. There are glow-worms on the undergrowth on both sides of the bridge. At first you see a few but after a few minutes you will see hundreds. On the way back to the car park you will see random glow-worms all over the place. Well worth a visit and it is free.
