We bought and paid for accommodation at this property in January 08 for a stay in August 08. When checking in, we expressed some concerns to the owners about there being no latch or locks on a swinging doors which opened directly from our room into their kitchen / food preparation and dining/lounge area which serves 3 meals per day to all guests of the property, so that there was little privacy from sounds or smells or, indeed security.
The female manager told my husband that she had 'better' accommodation available from the next night at a higher price. We said OK, we would try the original room for the first night and would then pay to upgrade to something quieter for the remaining nights if necessary.
Additionally, but not key to our concerns, was the fact that the accommodation was billed as a spa suite. But on check in we were told that with water restrictions their costs were too high and we were not to use the spa, and we were to minimise our other water use in the shower and basin!
My husband then went into the restaurant to book our dinners, at which time the male manager said that this was their home and they didn’t want to be ‘tippy-toeing’ around so that they wouldn’t inconvenience us, and that they didn’t want to have to lock up their dogs, in case they barked, or ask their other guests to be quiet on our behalf. He preferred that we didn’t try the room we had for one night and move to another one. He would prefer that we pack up straight away before utilising any of their facilities, and they would issue us a full refund.
Although a bit taken aback by all of this, we did so, and presented ourselves at the reception area, upon which the female manager aggressively denied us a refund and ordered us off the premises, threatening to have us evicted. We told her that her husband had just told us to pack up so that we could receive a refund. He joined the discussion, admitted freely that he had done so and asked his wife to give us our money (which they had had in their account for 7 months) and she started to argue with him. They both then left the reception area, leaving us standing there.
After 15 minutes, we went to find them (they were in the kitchen), where the female again ordered us from her premises, threatening to call the police if we did not leave immediately. We reminded the husband that it was on his suggestion that we pack up in the first place, and he said "Everything you are saying is true, but I don't make the financial decisions" and turned his back on us. The female manager became increasingly nasty and personal, several times suggesting to my husband that she could provide me with a sedative, and that I should seek professional counselling to address my 'problems'.
So we had been sent packing without having derived any benefit from the monies we pre-paid all those months ago.
We feel that this reflects very badly on Queensland tourism and mom-and-pop B&B facilities generally. In any event, even though this property is in a beautiful location, in my opinion, it’s not worth dealing with the eccentricities of the owners.
