“A great place to base a family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

The apartments here are perfect for families. There is a lot of space, self contained kitchen and out door furniture that overlooks the heated pool.

You'll be sharing restaurants with Chateau Elan but that's not a problem at all, as there was plenty of room in the restaurants.

The bed was one of the best Ive ever slept on. So comfortable.

The only thing that was odd was that there was no reception; basically you go to the real estate office and to the side there is a couple of office tables there which serves as the reception area for the apartments - very odd way to begin the experience. They are only open from 8am to 8pm so not sure what happens outside these hours.

Overall we enjoyed our weekend here and would come again.

We stayed at the Grand Mercure, The Vintage in the Hunter Valley in a modern two bedroom apartment with a great courtyard, full kitchen and two full size bathrooms. The apartments were very spacious, very clean and extremely comfortable, including the beds and pillows! The grounds were immaculate and the pool area was perfect. No matter where we were on the property, the staff were so helpful, friendly and welcoming. The new buffet breakfast up at the clubhouse was amazing with a fantastic pancake machine making fresh pancakes on request. The food was very fresh and varied with many different juices, breads, pastries, cooked food, fruits, cereals (and the list goes on) to choose from and the service was exceptional. It was such a nice setting overlooking the golf course and the buffet area was kept pristine clean and the food always topped up. We will definitely be back and we can't say enough about the service, facilities and meals. Great holiday!

We arrived at the Grand Mercure following a long drive from Sydney only to find the Grand Mercure reception was closed and we were redirected to a ‘communal’ resort reception albeit close by.

The welcome at this communal reception was ‘lukewarm’ and the briefest amount of information was given to enable us to find and access the allocated apartment – bearing in mind this was a $415.00 a night accommodation I thought this was ‘minimal customer service’ – it felt like an arrival at a budget roadside motel in the States.

We were given a key fob for a garage near the apartment which I assumed was to electrically operate the garage door – I pulled up outside the garage to find it didn’t work so I got out the car and manually pushed it up and open. When I tried the key fob the chain inside the garage was moving around but it had become detached from the door so was now inoperable.

After unloading the car I looked around and it dawned on me that there were no people around and the resort had the distinct feeling that it was deserted and rarely used – perhaps this was why the Reception was closed. The allocated apartment backed up this feeling as it seemed like no-one else had occupied this apartment for some time. Both balconies were dirty and strewn with leaves and dead (and alive) insects.

The apartment was large but the furniture was basic and had obviously seen some use at some time in the past.

The TV had no instructions and appeared to have few channels however I noticed there was a TV guide which seemed to suggest there were more channels available and after a bit of playing around I found a switch on the remote which gave some movie and sport channels.

Wi fi was available but at a charge - $10 per day (the first one in Australia so far – it’s been free in all hotels including a $149 a night ‘motel) – not impressed at this nightly rate

Then things improved slightly – the bed was comfortable and obviously with few other residents around it was very quiet. The bathroom was ok but after one unsatisfactory and very sparse shower I cleaned the shower head which greatly improved it – I guess another symptom of recent lack of use. The shower proceeded to work fine over the remaining days of our stay

Breakfast was taken at the Golf Club which was a walk of 200m but it was very good with a nice choice of well cooked food and a good choice of fruits and yoghurts etc. The staff were all very friendly. Following our positive experience of breakfast over the three days we also had two nice dinners in the evening and menu choice was good and the food of excellent quality.

On the final day of our visit we noticed ants walking around the kitchen bench – I think they had just arrived as I think I would have noticed them earlier. This is quite a remote location and I guess the ’wildlife’ will occasionally gain access to the rooms. I mentioned it to the cleaners as we were leaving (first we had seen in 3 days) and they didn't seem surprised but said they would deal with it.

Overall I have to say the resort is well overpriced and not value for money. The only real positive aspect was the food which was not controlled by the Vintage but by the Golf Club so the accom part was well below par for this price. I have already booked elsewhere for our return journey.

Room Tip: if you are looking for a quite break try to avoid the rooms near the swimming pool as it only takes...

We thoroughly enjoyed our family stay (2 adults + 2 infants) of 5 nights during the first week of January 2013. Our 2 bedroom apartment was spacious; we appreciated and made use of the two balconies at each end of the apartment. Bedrooms were large and each included a full bathroom. Also included was a functional kitchen, laundry and communal bbq. Our kids loved the swimming pool, we preferred the quiet nature of Grand Mecure pool rather than The Vintage pool which attracted many more people.
Congrats to management on its selection and training of staff; everyone we encountered was friendly and genuine in offering both service as well as advice on local activities.
The Vintage also afforded ready access to meals, golf and leisure spa; we enjoyed all these features also.

Room Tip: 2 bedroom apartments are upstairs, our infants navigated the stairs without concern however if you h...

I stayed at an apartment at the Vintage with my mum from November 13th until November 16th and having stayed before we knew what a fabulous location the Vintage is, and the high quality of the apartments and facilities. However, we were called the day before we were checking in, and informed that there would be none of the hotel's facilities available to us for the entirety of our stay due to a conference. This meant no golf, no tennis, no gym, no day spa (at Chateau Elan), no cafe and no restaurant (including for breakfast). There is another review that tells the same story, except that their experience was in August of this year, and from what we heard this has occurred several times this year.
The worst part is that they had our contact details since we booked, over a month prior, and yet chose to only notify us the day before. We were offered to have the fees waived if we wished to cancel - how convenient to have a whole day's notice! Given that we had both taken time off work and would have had a lot of trouble finding other similar accommodation at such late notice we felt we had no choice but to stay there.
When we checked in, we didn't complain at all and were given a sheet of paper basically telling us what we weren't allowed to use (essentially everything!) and offered us some 'substitutes' which included a small discount at 2 nearby restaurants, a discount for room service (but the menu is very limited) and free transport to and from them. As well as a discount for another golf course. Apart from the fact that this does not anywhere near substitute the complete lack of services, the one occasion we asked reception to organise transport and a booking for one of the discounted restaurants we had a fairly bad experience. Our transport never showed, and when we called to inquire it was quite clear that had no record of a booking for transport but we eventually made it to Esca at Bimbadgen (which was delicious). Esca did not mind us being late for our booking seeing they had no record of the booking that the Vintage supposedly made for us (although reception the next day tried to blame the booking problem on the restaurant)! And after dinner we tried calling the number we were given three times before leaving it to the restaurant to find someone to take us back; the Vintage staff were obviously too busy with the mystery conference to pick us up. (I say mystery because we hardly saw any conference people and staff told us it was a smallish exclusive group rather than a huge conference group using all the facilities.)
Another bad experience occurred when on our first morning we went for a walk around the grounds and whilst we were in the driveway in front of the main reception and restaurant area (not available to us) a staff member informed us that we weren't allowed to even walk there. She actually gestured to the bit of road next to her feet and told us that from here onwards was off limits. We weren't trying to spy or interrupt their function and had absolutely no intention of walking inside. It was just so unbelievable to be shooed away whilst trying to go for a walk, as though we were a scar on the landscape!
Although this review is very negative this is actually the first complaint myself or my mum have ever made about anything. We really felt we needed to let people know because as I said this is by no means the only time this has happened in 2012 at least, another review on trip advisor says the same thing. We still had a fantastic holiday of beautiful wineries and restaurants but our accommodation experience was horrible. I don't understand how the Vintage can advertise all its amenities and then not inform you that it won't be available to you.
The final straw was when on our last morning I asked whether we could check out half an hour later due to the fact we had a lunch booking at 12 and was assured that was not a problem and they would organise it with housekeeping. When the maid arrived at 11am on the dot to clean our room and had no idea of our half-hour late checkout, that was truly the nail in the coffin!

Room Tip: Fantastic apartments, just make sure there isn't a mystery 'conference' on when you are...

really nice hotel. have stayed quite a few times. the room is well appointed and very spacious. Kitchen lacks storage space, beds nice and comfortable kings, air con worked really well in the above 40 deg temps. Pool really needs a good filter, lots of 'floaties'.

Room Tip: nice to overlook the pool
