“Romantic Weekend in the Ocean Spa Villa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

Highly highly highly recommend a romantic weekend getaway in the Ocean Spa Villa at Murramarang Nature Resort. The villas are right on the beach, with ocean views from the beautiful spa room. This is a special place, with dolphins and whales in the morning, kangaroos and their joeys sharing your company (outdoors) and pristine beaches and headlands to explore. Food was great, everyone was so friendly, I want to move there! Definitely be back again soon.

Room Tip: Decide your purpose and companions first. The Ocean Spa Villa is definitely a romantic couple retre...

We stayed at Murramurrang for only 3 days during July with our 2 sons. We last came 15 years ago with our eldest son. We believe new Managers have taken over the Resort with some changes/renovations in place. We stayed in a Garden Villa and loved it, we had an ocean view and it was fairly modern with two bathrooms and spacious enough for all of us. Breakfast was included, cereal, toast, yoghurt, fruit and pastries, which was an added bonus. We loved the kangaroos and the dolphins and were very lucky to have perfect winter weather. The rate was very reasonable at this time of year, off peak, but we felt that the cost of the Villas in peak time wouldn't be reasonable considering the resort still needs to improve a few things. To have the swimming pool heated in winter so it is usable would benefit all those staying.

Room Tip: Front villas on the beach are lighter and brighter than those towards the back

We were staying at Murramarang as part of a 2 1/2 week course and it was great. The location is fantastic, right next to the beach, with spectacular views, and next to the bush. Kangaroos and wallabies hop around and are so tame you can pet them. The food is OK, nothing special, but edible.( It may have been after over 2 weeks of eating there, the food simply didn't appeal anymore). Some other guests has various problems with heating, cooking, electricity, but there were no problems in my cabin. The staff were always friendly and helpful. A very nice retreat.

Room Tip: Bungalows on the beach offer the best views of the water and you can walk straight out onto the beac...

When friends invited us to spend a week with them at Murramarang Beachfront Nature Resort we gladly accepted. Situated in Murramarang National Park about three and half hours south of Sydney, the Resort's advertising made it look like a natural paradise with a few essential creature comforts, such as a playground, pool, restaurant and cocktail bar thrown in. And let's face it, holidaying with a big group of friends is always great fun, especially for the kids, however there were certainly a few challenges in store for me and my wheels.

The two accessible cabins (31 and 32) are among the Resort's Forest Villas and are in fairly desperate need of refurbishment. Apart from the ramp into the cabin and some modifications in the en suite, there was little else done to make our cabin accessible. The pathway of travel through the living area was blocked by various bulky pieces of furniture making it extremely awkward to navigate. There were no modifications to the kitchen, the second bedroom or bathroom. I found it virtually impossible to use my manual wheelchair and ended up using my scooter instead as it was slightly less cumbersome. Fortunately there was a powerpoint conveniently located beside the bed so I could easily charge my batteries overnight.

I got the impression that whoever commissioned the modifications for the en suite meant well, but had little idea of what they were doing. The care toilet seat (more robust than ordinary seats) didn't actually fit properly on the older-style toilet and the vertical grab rails in the shower seemed to be positioned to make it easier for the installer to fit them rather than for someone in a wheelchair to use them.

In the public areas of the resort, I was able to get around but there was certainly room for improvement. I had to ask reception for the key to the accessible toilet which appeared not to have been used (or cleaned) for years and it was a fair distance from the pool. There was no attempt to provide wheelchair access to the beautiful beach, although to be fair, beach access for wheelies is a difficult problem everywhere.

On a more positive note, the Resort's location in Murramarang National Park makes it a truly special part of Australia. You are completely surrounded by native flora and fauna wherever you wander and I am sure it is an absolute thrill for overseas visitors to be able to share the camping grounds with masses of friendly kangaroos. A word of warning for wheelies though: your wheels will end up traipsing roo poo everywhere!

New owners have taken over the property since we stayed there and they are spending a lot of money and effort to refurbish the Resort and its amenities. When they are ready to improve the accessible cabins (and I wouldn't recommend them to fellow wheelies until they do) I hope that they will recognise the value in seeking specialist advice from experienced architects, designers and builders and maybe even a wheelie or two.

You can read more about my wheelie travels at www.wheelieplanet.com

Room Tip: If you are a wheelchair user, check to see whether or not they have refurbished their accessible cab...

We stayed in both an Ocean Spa Villa and a Beach Villa because we extended our stay. Both Villas were comfortable with heating,TV, basic cooking equipment, but no oven.
The staff were very helpful, and Scott in particular helped with the organising of our extended stay. The Resort was clean and well treed . Breakfast was included . There are 2 camp kitchens and 2 laundries, as well as a restaurant , shop with basic supplies., and a shop providing snack food. We had a pizza and nachos which were so generous that we couldn't finish them. Very friendly kangaroos greater us each morning.
The continental breakfast, of fruit juice, cereal, fruit, yogurt, pastries and toast was very generous.

Room Tip: any along the beach .

It rained and was cold all week, yet we still loved the place. The spa was beautiful as was the outlook. We were lucky enough to snag the cabin right on the beach with spa and king size bed.
The only downer was that the BBQ didn't work which is apparently due to the wind.
The pool area was nice and the bar always welcoming which is really what you want in a place like this. The pool area is also the internet hotspot although we had trouble connecting, probably because of the loads of scientists there for a convention on their laptops.
The water was crystal clear and the wildlife amusing. I would recommend this for anyone and I will definitely be hoping to return during a warmer and dryer part of the year.

Room Tip: Splash out, get the delux spa room. It's most definitely worth it.

Immersed in nature and the tranquil sounds of the beach I had a fun filled and relaxing time at the resort. The staff were always helpful and very knowledgeable of the area. I had some great R&R during the day, taking the opportunity to meander along the beach and breathe in the sea air. In the evening, apron in hand we had to a delightful cooking class and sat down to a gourmet three course meal with a tender fillet eye steak with truffle butter as the main (so delicious ). After a peaceful sleep in we went on a shopping spree at the Mogo Village and stopped by the Mogo Zoo on the way home. I can’t wait till next time.
