“too expensive for what it offers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2010

No proper access road to hotel.
Breakfast buffet, dinners and festival dinner were not satisfactory but the service staffs tried very best to communicate (they dont speak english).
The room is newly renovated but the bathroom is tiny, the toilet seat is smaller than the toilet itself.
We had to close all windows in the room by 17.30 before the mosquitos flew in.
Each day we paid 15 euro for a taxi ride to the nearest beach and 15 euro back to the hotel, once we hired a buggy for 150 euro (per day) but it was rusty and didnt work properly.
Overall there are many other beautiful spots in the world with much higher standard and less charges than this so called environmental- friendly island.

Although we were given an upgrade,( I later discovered that the other rooms were being renovated), this hotel is 100% complacent in its attitude to guests and service alike and obviously living on its apparent reputation. The food is ordinary, at times awful. Juices and coffee at breakfast undrinkable. The gastronomic event a commercial enterprise, and to cap it all another couple, without asking, were put on our table. Awful music (or if you are lucky a local radio chat show!) around pool and in restaurant ALL the time. Furnishings in public areas - worn and shabby. The room was nice enough, the bathroom small and basic - grubby fingermarks on door around handle. The hotel buggy we hired was falling apart and rusty (the best they had!) - but you need one on the island, unless you want to hike all day in the heat. All this for a mere 500/600 pounds a night!! much better to stay in a simple pousada with no pretensions and save your money for a proper hotel in a great city.

We spend 1 week at ze maria ,this pousada is totally overpriced at the price of a 4 star hotel ,the access road is horrible and the location is not so good (3kms from the beach );we had to cancel one month before arriving the last day of our reservation ,they didn t give us a refund;the festival gastronomico is a joke at 50 euros per person .There are some really nice pousada near the village for 1/4 of the price of ze maria.

There are not many places in the island that are not backpacking-style inns.
Ze Maria is truly a paradise within paradise.
Great front desk staff, famous buffet dinner on wednesdays and saturdays (totally worth it!!), fantastic breakfast, very nice pool, view over morro do pico......

Rates are high, but you should definitely go for it if you don't want to end up in a shabby cottage with insects all over the bedsheets (the mistake we made when we first booked a "chalet" in a crappy pousada, which actually is better rated here than ze maria (!!))

Other pousadas/ hotels worth checking: solar dos ventos, teju-acu, maravilha (not sure if itìs worth the price) - still to us Ze Maria is the only one that has it all!

How I miss this place. It was the first place we arrived at during our 3 week honeymoon. We spent 3 nights here. As soon as we arrived on the island they picked us up, served us drinks, gave an upgrade on the room with champagne, and were so kind to us. The views from this place are incredible. The pool was sensational. The big feast that they have twice a week is totally worth it.

There are only guesthouses in Fernando de Noronha and by far, Pousada Zé Maria is the best of them. We did an extensive research before traveling and were not disappointed. Zé Maria has very nice and modern units (like in a normal hotel), a swimming pool and beautiful sights. The restaurant hosts twice a week a famous gastronomical festival not to be missed. Staff was very friendly and the owner (Zé Maria) is always around with a smile. One of the best beaches in Noronha is few minutes away by jeep or even within walking distance (not in the rainy season though). Internet connection can be slow, but it is the best you can get on the island because it is run by satellite. Since Fernando de Noronha is a natural reserve, you will not find resorts or the same amenities as in other destinations. However, your stay at this guesthouse (the best in Brazil in 2009) will be extremely comfortable. Be ready to plan in advance in order to avoid the rainy season. There are many mosquitoes everywhere on the island so make sure to take enough repellent with.

The landscapes in Fernando de Noronha are amazing. The beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Be ready to walk, climb and swim.

We had considered staying at Pousada Solar dos Ventos, but it was more expensive. During our stay we heard from other tourists that food and service were not as good as in Zé Maria.
