We are Americans living in Brazil for two years and thought at first we would not do Fernanda de Noronha due to the expense. When we were looking at pousadas on Trip Advisor, we saw the recommendations for Joab's House and were intrigued. We determined that we would probably spend more time away from any room we rented than there, so we decided to give Joab's a try. It's about half as much as most of the other pousada's on the island, which allowed us to get to go.
As the other reviews have mentioned, "Joabi" picked us up from the airport in an air-conditioned car and drove us to his place. There are few pousadas on the island that are right on the beach....and his is. Wow, what a view! We were shown into a clean, simple room with AC and a fridge. The towels were thicker than many hotels I have stayed in. Our room was different than others in the house - we had our own bathroom but it was across the hall. If having your own space is important, you may want to request prior to arrival.
After traversing through the very bumpy roads to the pousada (and throughout the island!), we determined to rent a buggy. Within 30 minutes of taking Joab up on his offer to get us one, a buggy arrived at the house for us. It was around R$130/day and there was no paperwork to sign! We strapped the car seat into the front and my five year old and I rode in the back with Daddy driving. It was a blast and a half!
The first day Joab connected us with his brother, Johnny, who is a guide on the island. We spent the day with him for about R$220. He took us to a special preserve where only about 75 people are allowed in daily. After a beautiful hike, we experienced the most incredible snorkeling ever. Then, tired as we were, Johnny carried one of the kids out for us! Next we went swimming with the turtles at Praia du Sueste (which I recommend doing more at high tide than low), followed by Johnny riding with us to take us to the *most breathtaking* views on the island. He was quite kind and patient with our tired children. (FYI having a guide for the entire day is much more affordable than just having a guide take you to do one activity, like guide you to see turtles).
The next day, Joab reserved us a spot on a tour boat, which was 6 hours around the island including the most phenomenal dolphin experience and a snorkeling opportunity, as well as a delicious lunch on the boat.
Joab is a salt of the earth kind of guy and I found him to truly care about what our family was going to do, encouraging to us about our kids being able to participate, and very helpful and knowledgeable about the island and what to do/where to go.
While the accommodation was quite simple, the service was very genuine and experienced. He invited us to drink his water, use the kitchen, wash our clothes, etc., etc., and we felt comfortable doing so. We would definitely recommend this to friends and we hope to return one day!
His website is hard to find....so here it is (in Portuguese):
The rooms upstairs have a view. One has a private bathroom across the hall; the others are suites. T...
