“Want a wonderful place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Really enjoying the Mawimbi and Holbox. The hotel is a superb combination of simple comfort and attention to detail. The staff is very attentive, but unobtrusive. They provide a tour to swim with the whale sharks that is excellent on a very safe and stable boat. And finally, their restaurant bar make it possible to never leave the premises to eat out if you like. I'd come back in a New York minute!

Room Tip: Try second floor for a great view.

Mawimbi is a place to enjoy and relax. Everything is taken care of and the personnel working there is really wonderful, friendly and always make you feel at home. The owners have thought of all the little details to make your stay remarkable and unforgettable.

We stayed at Mawimbi in April 2013 and LOVED it!!! It's withing steps of town center, yet quiet and seems so tucked away. Rustic design combined with gorgeous traditional Mayan fabrics and decor, very clean outside and in, and staff is super friendly. Owners of Mawimbi live on the posada with their adorable dogs and mingle with the tourists, you will feel like you are staying with friends and family. Gret breakfast (included), fresh organic juices, filtered water available to you at all times at no additional cost... and so much more! Great beach vibes, lots of shade and hammocks, beach swing beds. It's small, quiet, and simply perfect. Bliss! We will be back.

I begin with an apology! As my travelling companion stated upon our arrival, one cannot help but describe the experience of Mawimbi except with hyperbole, and I find that I cannot write this review without it as well. I may sound extreme in my adjectives, but by no means am I exaggerating. Two of my childhood friends and I--on what we termed a "trip of a lifetime"-- arrived in Holbox and Mawimbi on a Wednesday afternoon and immediately became awe-struck at the sheer beauty and stunning simplicity of the area. The owners and managers of Mawimbi, who are lovely and interesting, welcomed us warmly and unfolded into the most gracious hosts for our 5 day stay (mucho gracias Claudia, Jeevyl, and Onny). If life is lived in the details, then life needs to be lived at Mawimbi (oops, again sorry for what sounds like hyperbole!). The hotel and restaurant and beach area are filled with details of: water (light fixtures are bulbs illuminated in conch shells), the sense of the sea and sand (even in the shampoo and soap), a library of books to borrow (many languages represented), colorful Mexican pottery (used on the tables at each meal), and more…. I awoke refreshed in a thatched roof-like room in crisp white sheets, and --in my bare feet --(days went by and I did not wear shoes) walked 50 steps to fresh fruit and wonderful coffee served at tables under Mawimbi’s palapita on the beach. Our days stretched before us with long walks on sugar sand, with hours of reading in hammocks, with generous bowls of the most delicious guacamole I have ever tasted -- accompanied by a delectable-beyond-words mango margarita -- and with more napping, reading, walking, swimming, etc....One day, with the efficient help of the staff, we chartered a small boat with a guide who helped us explore other islands, discovering the beauty of pink flamingos in their natural home and stumbling upon the ancient Cucaracha de mar swimming near our feet. Our evening food was some of the best I have ever eaten! Sometimes we ate right at Mawimbi with an excellent menu of both Spanish and non-Spanish food (we noticed other restaurateurs from Holbox were eating there too— the shrimp fajitas are excellent!). Some evenings we walked the small streets of Holbox for a meal -- and the two restaurants I recommend the most are (1) El Chapulim Restaurant. There is no menu; just ask Eddick and Carlos to cook you whatever is fresh--the food is fantastic and the drinks are fresh and quenching. (Okay I admit we ate here every day, whether it was an appetizer, or main meal or dessert, it was that good). And the other highly recommended restaurant is (2)Viva Zapata -- the waiters are welcoming and the fish served is caught that day, often by the waiters themselves.
Our days were slow paced but quick in time and all too soon we had to leave. If there were downsides of our trip, I would say that (1) we longed for more days spent at Mawimbi, and (2) there were mosquitoes in the evenings. Not bad if those are the only "down sides" of the trip. We sure hope that it is not a once-in-a-life-time trip. We want to return to Mawimbi again. It was magico.

My husband and I stayed at Mawimbi on our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. We stayed in the ocean front room for most of our stay, and because we extended our visit we had to switch to a bungalow for our last night. Both rooms were great, but we think the ocean front is worth it if you can book it in time. We didn't really need the kichenette in the bungalow anyway. We borrowed the (free) kayak one day and paddled up and down the beach. Mawimbi's was by far the best set up beach on the island. We checked out several other hotels while we were there (for our potential return visit to Holbox) and the only thing we wish is that Mawimibi had a pool... but with such a beautiful calm beach the only real reason is to rinse off the salt water. We decided we would still return to Mawimbi over the other hotels.

The rooms are no frills, but charming. At first we were concerend about the heat and comfort sleeping, but the A/C in both rooms was great, we actually had to turn the temperature up after coming home from fishing. The restaurant at the hotel was very good as well. The breakfast was plenty for me (fresh fruit and toasts) and for my husband we just added some eggs for a small charge. All the drinks were delicious, and the bartenders were so nice. One day we went fishing and brought back a few snapper. By the time we had showered and gone back outside to the bar, we had a plate of fresh ceviche waiting for us. It was the best ceviche we've had and one of our trip highlights. The next day the chef grilled the remaining fish up whole and it was also delicious. Everything was reasonable too - we figured we had racked up quite a bill and were suprised at how low it was when we went to check out of our room.

We definitely recommend taking the kayaks out. The water was so calm, we easily paddled past all of the other hotels and found our own private beach to hang out at and swim. These were free to anyone at the hotel, you just have to ask so you can get the paddles and life jackets. Only wish we'd brought some fishing equipment and beer with us!

After we left, we got a follow up email a few days later from the staff, just saying that they hoped we had a nice trip home, etc. It was a nice touch, they clearly know their customer service.

We look forward to visiting Holbox and would stay at Mawimbi again and again!

My friend and I stayed in the small bungalow at Hotel Mawimbi in mid-May 2013. Although we were at first surprised at how close it was to the reception area, we knew in about 30 minutes that this would be no problem. The adorable bungalow with small kitchen and thatched roof was perfect in every way. Aside from a little "road" noise (golf carts and four wheelers), it was a quiet room with plenty of privacy.

Every morning, we stepped out of the bungalow in bare feet (the property is immaculate - the sand is raked every morning... we never worried about stepping on anything) and across the sand to breakfast in the open air restaurant area. Everyone who waited on us was attentive and kind. I don't remember having such a low stress time at a hotel. It was delightful to be actually BORED now and then! The hammocks and delightful outdoor "beds" were always plentiful. The hardest decision we had to make was whether to eat, nap or swim.

I would suggest you get out and see the town. It won't be the highlight of your trip, but you will meet some nice people and experience the "culture" of the place. Also, there are tours a plenty; we did a two-stop tour, visiting a natural spring and another island. We saw flamingos, iguanas, crabs, and lots of other amazing things.

The sand is warm, the water is like a bathtub... don't overpack - you won't need anything but a few outfits, a few swimming suits and a pair of sandals. Hotel Mawimbi can take care of the rest. Such an amazing place! (And, very few children, which I appreciated)

Room Tip: The rooms nearer to the beach get more light, and even though they adjoin, there was plenty of priva...

We spent three days in Mawimbi hotel during summer 2012. Everything was perfect: food, room and general attention by their Italian owners. All their staff were always kind and helpful. We did feel at home every minute.
