“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at Hotel Mawimbi. It was a last minute decision so we are not able to get a beach front room and, in fact, I think we were lucky they had a vacancy. Our room was opposite the reception area and the only problem with this was out dog, who was with us barked when anyone passed the door - not really a problem as we did not spend much time in the room. The room was nicely decorated and everything was spotlessly clean. We didn't use the little kitchen as we ate out. The food in the hotel restaurant was very good. We ate breakfast there every day and found the fruit, coffee, toast and juice more than enough. We had lunch once and dinner once and everything was very good and reasonably priced.
The best restaurant in town was La Parilla de Juan, well worth the climb up the stairs.
The only thing we have to complain about was the weather. The temperature was in the low 20sC and the wind was very strong with a lot of seaweed on the beach (not at the hotel but further down). This meant we spent a lot of time sitting in the restaurant behind glass rather than on the beach. The staff and owners were all very helpful and friendly. Hopefully our next visit the weather will be better,

Heard about the island through a friend a few years ago. And decided to check out mawimbi that same year 2010. everything was perfect from the room directly on the beach to the food which we found amazing, fresh fish every night. The owners are very friendly and a stray dog followed us the entire week (Goliath, in English). The resort and island are perfect if your looking for a truly relaxing vacation. I never felt safer on a foreign island. The small town and restaurants give you a great feeling of what life on this island is like! would definitely go back if It is not over run with tourists and large loud resorts. Check this place out its a small paradise. And make sure you rent a golf cart to check out the rest of the island. You'll find your own private beach somewhere to relax and enjoy holbox.

We stayed at Mawimbi for three days after spending four in Tulum and wish we'd spent the entire time in Holbox at Mawimbi. Holbox was absolutely wonderful for us and our 10-lb dog who travels with us. There are a few dogs who live at Mawimbi and another who come daily with the staff. All the dogs were friendly and adorable. The ones that live there bark a tiny bit at dogs who come onto the property or beach but not in an aggressive or mean way. The dogs are very well behaved. The owner and staff are friendly and helpful. The decor is Guatemalan and Mexican and really attractive and beautiful. We loved the inclusive breakfast and the guacamole but didn't try much else but drinks (also good) on the menu. The hotel location is the best on Holbox—somewhat private but close to town. We were told our view of the ocean was somewhat obstructed but the only obstruction was palm trees!
The place is super clean, well-maintained and well thought out from the foot shower tot he balcony clothesline. There is plenty of hot water, good water pressure and nice towels. The beach furniture is comfortable and the balconies are beautiful.
After checking out several other hotels, we decided that Mawimbi definitely has the best vibe and the best beach on the island.
Be sure to bring mosquito spray and sunscreen. The mosquitoes are really only a problem for an hour or so at dusk if you're out, but that hour was enough time for them to feast on my legs to the tune of 30 bites. There are screens on the windows so you can use that time to shower and get ready for dinner or something. The sun is stronger than you think so be sure to cover the tops of your feet and your entire body with sunscreen.
We didn't partake in any activities except a yoga class next door at Tortuga ($12. for a joyless 1.5 hours) but Mawimbi staff were more than happy to recommend or arrange activities.
Try Champulim and Colibri for dinner—both are really good.

Room Tip: Ocean facing is the way to go.

We stayed almost 3 weeks at this beautiful hotel in January and we loved every minute of it.
At first we had only booked for 2 weeks, since we were planning on going to Cancun, but we loved it so much that we extended our stay at the Mawimbi instead of. It is the most charming place we have ever stayed at. The staff is great, location just perfect and food and drinks excellent. Holbox itself is a bautiful authentic island with small restaurants and cafes. You won`t find any Mcdonalds or Starbucks here, which is GREAT! We will definetly be back!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for the crab room, it is a smaller room, but it has the best view!

This was our second visit to Holbox, far from the giant all-inclusives of Cancun. A place to totally relax. Golf Carts instead of cars, sandy roads and, if you drive from Cancun, you can leave your car in covered parking by the ferry dock. Ferry is 30 minutes @ M$80 per person.
Mawimbi is right on the beach and a fabulous place to stay, romantic and peaceful - a tropical paradise. Beach Bar and Restaurant with good food and walk out into the ocean where the sea bed slopes ever so gradually. 100 metres out and you are finally out of your depth!
Our thanks to the friendly staff for making our stay exceptional.

We spent 5 days in Mawimbi last December and totally loved the place. All the staff at Mawimbi is great and Ornella, the owner, is the friendliest host. We all were spoilt with the great service.

We had a couple of days of very windy weather and it was very nice to be in a place like this hotel where you could just relax and chill.

The location of the hotel is superb. It's right on the beach and a very short walk from the town. We were also very please with the food and it wasn't just delicious but very good value, same goes for the drinks. The ceviche is to die for same as the cajeta crepas and the strawberry daiquiris!

I fully recommend this place if you are looking for a boutique type of hotel to enjoy a few days in the seaside. It's unpretentious but the deco of the place is lovely. It's rustic but very well kept and all rooms are not extremely big but spacious enough. I went with several members of my family so got to see the more high-end rooms and the standard ones and we all were please with all the accommodation.

We can't wait to go back
