“My most peaceful laid back vacation ever at Mawimbi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2012

I studied all of the reviews and was very selective choosing Mawimbi. I expected it to be peaceful and nice but was blown away as I hit the entry. Beautiful! There were 5 of us and for 4 of us it was an ideal vacation and vacation spot. The 5th person would have prefered more activity but still loved it. If you are looking for peaceful, Mexico with a European flavor, quiet (something I didnt know still existed) great ceviche, the best guacamole in the world...Mawimbi is for you. I also highly recommend their whale tour. They have an awesome boat and guide ..

Room Tip: Honestly the room doesnt matter much... balcony with obstructed view was great for us. .The obstruc...

Mawimbi its the best place to hide from the hectic routine. Its silent and beautiful. You can have a fresh breakfast with an amazing view. The beach is clean and quiet. You can enjoy an amazing sunset taking a dip into the warm waters Mawimbi offers. All Rooms are beautifully decorated and offer A/C. It also offers guided tours for all attractions in the Island. The food its restaurant offers is good (a bit pricey) and beers are always cold. The hosts are very friendly and treated us as family. My girlfriend and I are really looking forward to spend more time there.

Remember to bring mosquito repellent because they are strong and hungry

Room Tip: Rooms with Kitchens offer a gorgeous view of the ocean

My wife and I spent a first-anniversary honey-moon at Mawimbi for a week in July and couldn't have asked for a better time. The staff was perfect from the booking and arranging the transfers (which were on time, friendly and hassle-free - worth every penny), to arranging tours and trips while we were there. The grounds are easily the nicest on the island and the myriad palm trees used for shade and ambiance really set it apart from the other hotels on the island. Breakfast, which includes fresh fruit salad, toast with fresh jam and coffee or tea, is always sublime when eaten with your toes in the sand, under the shade of a palm tree. When my wife and I expressed a desire to go fishing (me) and snorkeling (her), Claudia and Jeevyl immediately arranged a local fisherman to take us out and do both. Our own boat and captain for the day! We caught fish, which he made into ceviche on the boat while we snorkeled at the freshwater spring that gives Holbox its namesake. Other days were spent walking miles out into the ocean on sandbars that kept the water at ankle-depth for hours, or reading books on a swinging bed, under a canopy of driftwood and palm fronds. Go. Do the whale shark thing, it's a once in a lifetime kinda memory. Do the lounging on the beach all day thing. Enjoy the beach and the water. Bring bug spray ("Herbal Armor" is a good, non-deet brand that we got at Target that served us well) for after dark. And seriously, stay at Mawimbi if you want it all done right.

Room Tip: We stayed in both a bungalow and a second-floor room with an ocean-view. Both were spectacular.

Hotel Mawimbi is a small, boutique property run with loving care by its owners who live on site. We came specifically to swim with the whale sharks and secondarily did research about which place to stay in. We arrived on the very first day of high season so had to pay $195 a night for our room. Our "suite" was one of the largest units they had but space is definitely at a premium at this hotel. It opened right up onto the sandy beach with chaises and hammocks all around. The view was serene, especially in the early mornings. Breakfast consists of fresh local fruits, toast, coffee and juice and you can purchase egg dishes. They have cheaper units available but they looked absolutely tiny. The hotel is situated just at the edge of town and is easily walkable everywhere. The lifesaver for the 4 nights that we stayed here was the mosquito netting over the beds. Unfortunately, whale shark season also coincides with rainy mosquito season and those little buggers are absolutely ferocious! Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and at night but they're still everywhere. We went to dinner every night with long sleeved shirts and pants on and still got bitten all over our hands and feet! The hotel offers an airport pick-up service from Cancun but we decided to rent a car instead. The drive was very easy, ~2.5 hours each way and there are several parking lots in Chiquila (where you take the ferry to Holbox) for 50 pesos per day. By the way, do not purchase any roundtrip ferry tickets in Chiquila because there are several boats running back and forth but none of them run on an hourly schedule so it's easier to just buy a ticket from whichever boat is leaving next. Our favorite place for dinner was Los Peleones in town, not a huge menu, but wonderful food with homemade pastas and very reasonable prices. Lastly, for our whale shark tour, we went with Willy's Tours. (Sign up in town. DO NOT prebook with "reservationists" online). The captain and guide were excellent. There were at least 20 of these beautiful creatues swimming around. We each went into the water 4 separate times, once being so close we got slapped with their tail inadvertently. We saw manta rays, dolphins, flamingos as well.

My wife and I celebrated our 10th anniversary at Hotel Mawimbi June 18-22. It was everything we had hoped for. The accommodations, food and service were wonderful. We can't wait to visit again.

The big attraction was the whale shark tour from the hotel. The owners of Mawimbi started the tours over a decade ago, and they still provide an unbeatable experience. We saw dozens of the awesome creatures and had a wonderful time snorkeling within a few feet of them. Some other couples on the island went out the same day with a different operator and saw only two whale sharks. :-( I can't imagine where else one could go to be that close to such large and gentle creatures in the wild. We also saw dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays, sting rays, land crabs, iguanas, flamingos, osprey and a variety of sea birds.

The atmosphere at Mawimbi is luxurious and relaxing. The staff was very friendly and cheerful. They spoke with us about the region, the town, local dining (which was ALL very good), wild life, etc. They made us feel like family. I was amazed at the attention to detail throughout the property, from the plants growing from every nook, to the freshly raked sand, to the simplicity and beauty of the locally-inspired design. Nothing ever seemed overlooked or out of place.

The meals were fresh and delicious. Every morning, we enjoyed a breakfast of fresh fruit, fruit juice, toast with apple butter, and fresh coffee. We also had the seafood ceviche for dinner, and it was fabulous.

We were a bit nervous about transportation to and from Cancun. However, it turned out to be a cinch. The bus from Cancun to Chiquila was clean, cool and very inexpensive. From Chiquila, there are quite a few ships and boats making the 25 minute trip to Holbox. There were several boat operators, with one or more boats leaving every hour. The boats seem to stay well coordinated with bus arrivals and departures. Once we arrived at Holbox, there were plenty of golf cart taxis, and everybody knows where everything is. Once on the island, we enjoyed walking around the small town. There were golf carts and bikes for rent as well, but we never had the need -- everything is a short walk from Mawimbi. For the trip back to Cancun, we shared a taxi with another couple. Again, very inexpensive. The taxi ride was considerably faster than taking the bus, which requires a connection in downtown Cancun.

Although the high season for whale shark tours is Mid-June through August, I would encourage you to visit Hotel Mawimbi any time of year. It is so beautiful and relaxing there. You won't want to leave. Also, be forewarned... developers have purchased huge tracts on the island. Holbox won't be small and "undiscovered" for much longer. So, you might want to shake a leg.

Room Tip: Our balcony room had an ocean view through the palm trees. The hotel is small, and right on the bea...

I loved it here. The beach is dreamy and the swing beds, lounge chairs and hammocks were great. The breakfast was included and included hot coffee, a bowl of fresh fruit and toast with butter and jam. They also served lunch and dinner that were delicious and reasonable priced. The room was clean and the resort was quiet at night and they provided good towels for showers and real beach towels. The guests were friendly and the owners, Oni and Carmello were great too.

If you go, get a massage from Tizianna. She is Italian and gave one of the best massages I've ever had! She works at Mawimbi.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Mawimbi from the end of May until the beginning of June. We had a fabulous time; it was everything we could have asked for. We loved rhythm of the place, each day punctuated by taking the chaise lounge cushions in and out, and the raking of the sand. We stayed in one of the standard rooms with a balcony complete with hammock, table and chair, clothes line, and partial ocean view (some rooms have full ocean view). The room was simple, but it had all the necessities for a relaxing vacation: big, comfortable bed with soft sheets, clean bathroom with hot water, ceiling fan for keeping cool, easy to use safe to lock passports/money away, and a nice big window. There was also air conditioning which we didn't use.
For food, we ate breakfast at Mawimbi - coffee, tea, fresh fruit juice, toast, butter, jam. Sounds so simple, but I looked forward to it every morning. I'm sure part of it is the view of the water from the tables. The restaurant is open-air, sand-floored - no need to wear shoes. We ate some lunches and dinners at Mawimbi, but we also tried some restaurants in town. We loved the seafood paella at Los Peleones.
During the day, we spent our time lying on the beach reading. We also walked around the island most afternoons - although the town seems to take a siesta mid-afternoon. I was concerned that I might get bored, but no way! I loved lying on the beach relaxing, drinking a margarita or delicious mango frozen.
The staff was very sweet and helpful. We especially appreciated Francisco and Randy at the bar/restaurant. It was very convenient to be able to run a tab and pay for everything at the end.
We ended up ordering pesos at our local bank before we left. I had never done that before an international trip, but it really worked out for us. We didn't have to worry about changing money in Cancun at the airport - and it was nice to pay for Mawimbi right when we got there and get that out of the way. Although their confirmation email quoted everything in US dollars, they appreciated payment in pesos.
If you are on the fence - just do it! You won't be disappointed. Mawimbi is like paradise, the beach is beautiful, the ocean is blue, warm, and swimmable, the food is great - what more could you ask for?

Room Tip: If I went again, I'd get one of the beachfront bungalows.
