“Can do better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Beware, this is the hotel many taxi drivers take you to when you ask for a recommendation at the dock. The hotel is mediocre in terms of cleanliness and leaves much to be desired in terms of charm. Wireless was weak. For an equal or better experience at a similar or lower price, take a look around near the square, seek out a room with a hammock for the full Holbox experience!

Place we intended to go to was booked full.
Girl at reception showed me the room and it seemed ok. Asked the girl if there was hot water. Don't really need it on an island like Holbox, but it does matter for pricing. She sad yes. As there was some hesitation in her voice, i asked if she was sure. Then she mentioned she was. Then i asked about WIFI and she mentioned it was down.
Told her we'd take the room and that first we'd put our stuff in the room and then i'd come down to pay. I paid for one night and after that she mentioned there where some problems with the hot water. Couldn't understand exactly what she mentioned, but i understood that when we'd need hot water, we needed to mention and they'd arrange for it. We didn't need any at the time, so we left it with that.
Next morning when we requested hot water, they mentioned that if we'd like some they'd bring some up in a bucket. Since when is that having hot water in a room?
So i brought it up. At first i was accused of lying about the promise of hot water. Then it was mentioned that as we paid rather much, the next night we'd get compensated for it.
Never happened. They offered us the room for another night at 300 pesos. The room is not worth more than that in high-ish season. We felt ripped off and left.
Found a posada for that same rate (300) and better value for money. Without being called a liar.

The staff at this hotel are so incredibly warm and accomodating, it will more than make up for the fact that you are not right *on* the beach.

I stayed here last summer, and it was just a wonderful place to call home base. I stayed for eight days, and would definitely stay there again.

Elements is about a 5-min. walk from the beach, if that, and I walked everywhere while I was on the island.

The rooms are clean and bright (but curtains are heavy enough to block out the sun, so you don't have to the leave the A/C running while you're gone). The bathroom amenities are replaced or refreshed each day.

The lobby downstairs is great because they have wicker couches and free (free!) WiFi. While I encourage you to spend all your time on the beach or eating and drinking, sometimes you just have to take minute to update your Facebook default photo to taunt your friends with an amazing shot of the sunset in Holbox.

Do stay here. It is cheaper than several other hotels, but it has A/C, big, clean rooms and free wifi. The beds are not soft, but I slept well every single night. And I speak no Spanish, and had no problem at all communicating with the staff here.

They even have a little restaurant in the hotel if you should want to get a meal without going too far from your room.

It's wonderful at Elements and in Holbox, and I can't wait to go back.

There are two kinds of hotels on Isla Holbox. On the one hand there are expensive resort-type places where you can relax and pamper yourself in rustic luxury. On the other hand, there are simple, less expensive more typical Mexican hotels such as the Posada de los Arcos and the Posada Laury. These places are pleasant and laid back if not luxurious or necessarily quiet.

The Elements is a combination of these types, mixing the worst of both with none of the benefits. At some 800 pesos, the Elements features the price of an expensive hotel. But the green paint and red concrete floors does little to give the tiny cell-like rooms a resort feel. Despite the price, you get all the funky informality of a cheap hotel. For example, the AC didn’t work in our room. This would not have been a terrible problem but there was no functional screen on the window. At no time during our three days did we ever have a shower with hot water, although we repeatedly asked. Supposedly, new bottles of water would be placed in our room every day. Only once did this happen. It is neither near on the beach nor close to town. The beds were well made and the bathroom was nice, though the floors in the bedroom were perpetually gritty. In a cheap hotel, such irregularities don’t seem so annoying, but when you splurge to enjoy a vacation they are downright disappointing.

Another disappointment was the noise. The Elements appears to be the destination hotel for tours from Cancún and during our visit was filled by a succession of Cancún crowd visitors on the island for one night. The constant loud partying, shouting, slamming of doors, and dragging of furniture meant we got little sleep. The bar with its loud music amid the clotheslines and air conditioners on the roof is both pathetic and annoying, with booming bass reaching down to our second floor room. We wanted to visit Holbox to take it easy; if we had wanted a Cancún party atmosphere we would have gone to Cancún.

As to the staff, the surliness of Benjamín was only exceeded by the smarminess of Eduardo. The cook in the hotel restaurant would incessantly visit our table fishing for compliments while slipping into the back to add spurious charges to the bill.

So if you’re coming to Holbox to pass a relaxing few days, I would suggest avoiding the Elements. If I were to go back I would check out the Posada los Arcos or Laury, which are run by Mexicans and not foreigners and seem more agreeable.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your comments which will help us to improve our services. We are very interested in our guests’ satisfaction and so even more surprised about your review.
We have been trying to locate your reservation through our bookings and could not find any matching your comments. This is why we would kindly ask you to contact us directly as we are very interest in changing your opinion about our Hotel Elements Holbox.

Please allow us to comment some of the issues stated in your review: from our hotel to the beach there is a two minutes walk and less then 15 minutes walk to down town Holbox, our rooms are quiet and clean and photos are published by the tour operators we work with, as well as on our web site. The same applies for our exact location in Holbox. If you had arrived in our hotel as a walk-in, we for sure would have shown you the room before your check-in. Referring to the water bottles, they are a courtesy of the hotel upon arrival as well are the bathroom amenities. All our windows are equipped with a special sunscreen folio, black outs and mosquito nets. We have a hard time understanding your comments concerning room, location and amenities.

As to your comment about the Chef, we do believe that it is one of his duties to ask each guest if he is content with his meal and if his wishes are satisfied, we are sorry if there has been a misunderstanding.

If you have stayed with us for three nights, you know that our hotel is a quiet place and the one night we had a special event on the roof top was an exceptional happening. We thank you for understanding that guests from Cancun also enjoy their holidays in Holbox.

We apologize for the inconveniences you faced during your stay in our hotel and really hope that you will contact us directly.
With best regards,
Sandra

The rooms are on the second and third floors. There is a nice rooftop area with a view of the surrounding area and ocean. The problem is that the hotel allowed the use of the rooftop the entire evening for a party and hangout for people that were not even staying at the hotel. Loud music and all night sounds. Even when they turned down the music, we still could hear it and every sound made... walking, dragging furniture used as lounges and beds. Our room was directly below where most of the people were hanging out and every sound echoed in the room. At 4:00 am when some of the loudest revelers were driven home, there still remained a number of people talking and making noise. The hotel asked them to turn down the music, but it did not help. They should not have allowed an all night party to keep the hotel guests from getting any sleep. I would not recommend the hotel to anyone other than those who did not want to get any sleep. Poor management. I would love to hear from hotel elements. When we mentioned the problem as we left, we got a blank stare

As a solo traveler, I thought Holbox would be an interesting locale to explore since I would be celebrating my 49th birthday on August 1st. The hotel is located one block from the beach and has an amazing view of the ocean from the roof deck. All was perfect until I ate at a small restaurant downtown and became violently ill. The staff and especially the manager Sandra, took such good care of me, checking in with me often to make sure I was OK, and to bring ice, juice and comfort. They were instrumental in helping me to leave the island a day early - no easy task since it's a taxi, ferry and 3 hour drive to the Cancun airport. Thank you Elements Hotel! I would recommend you to everyone without hesitation.

I worried with high season rates, but got a good rate relative to other places. A touch out of town, but close and also close to beach (a block, but check out the rooftop lounge for a great view daytime, nighttime, sunset. I was worried about a catch, or poor service due to one review. Instead every employee I have met (5 now) is helpful and great. Booked excursions for me. Nice rooms, good feel to them, clean with wonderful bathroom. Cool air conditioning on the hot days. Wifi a wonder for me, allowing me to stay an extra day. I am impressed and happy.
