“Ivan the great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

Whatever expectations we had of this place were blown out of the water when we walked through the little yard and saw the setting. Michaelangelo couldn't paint a prettier picture, and I certainly can't do it justice with the limitations of words. We planned to stay for 2 nights on a little mexican adventure, but ended up extending to 5. The manager, Ivan is a living legend and found us space each time even though the place was nearly full. Friendly staff, good food and a family of iguanas conspired to make this stay unforgettable. The island is a great place too, and having explored it we werecertain we werein the best hotel. Chop chop, book a holiday here, you won't regret it unless you are a buffoon.

We stayed 4 nights at VF in order to attend a wedding hosted at neighboring hotel Las Nubes. We ate breakfast every day at VF but split up lunches and dinners between VF, Las Nubes and in the town.

Pros:
**On-site service at VF is extremely attentive and kind. I have rarely experienced such lovely waiters, bar tenders and front desk staff in all my travels. Bravo!
**The rooms are simple but large with sufficient A/C to handle even the hottest days.
**Wi-fi was extremely good from all locations including the room, main house and by the pool; notably this is NOT the case at higher end Las Nubes where guests must sit in the lobby to use wi-fi
**Food and beverage prices are very reasonable, particularly in comparison to neighboring Las Nubes which is extremely overpriced
**The eco-toilets do not present any nuisance, no odor or inconvenience in any form.... they are normal toilets without flushing, you won't even know the difference so we were happy to be more sustainable.
**The ocean views from the pool area are remarkable, extremely lovely.
**The showers are very large with flowing water sufficient to bath two people at once; no bath tub in our room, not that we wanted one anyway.
**Breakfast is included with a few very tasty options (e.g. chilaquiles are delicious) though no standard American oatmeal or dry cereal is available- after a few days I was craving a lighter AM meal.
**They give you two water bottles each day which is a very welcomed nicety.

Cons:
**You must plan your flight details in/out of Cancun in consideration of the general Holbox Island ferry schedule; we were forced to end our trip one day earlier than expected because of a miscommunication about the ferry time table- confirm the time table with IVAN and no one else (other people provided us with inaccurate information which caused problems for our itinerary).
**The beach at VF is covered in foot-thick seaweed making ocean access a bit "grimy". However, once you transverse the 15 feet of seaweed the water is immaculate. They were building a walkway of sorts over the seaweed while we were there but it was not yet completed by the time we departed.
**Although our room was clean and there were no off-putting odors the pillows inexplicably smelled like ashtrays.
**The menu is missing a basic green salad although it seems trivial to gripe about this given the variety of other good offerings on the menu
**The seaweed build-up on the beach creates a pretty intense sulfur smell if you are downstream from the wind.

Other Notes:
**VF is a bit of a hike from town- 25 minutes- which in extreme heat we found to be too intense to endure. Taxis are 50 pesos each way and the VF is glad to call one for you. We wanted seclusion so did not mind the distance but I can foresee how others might not feel the same.
**Bring everything you need with you to the island including sunscreen, toothpaste, magazines etc. There is no toiletry or convenience type of store at VF... if you forget something you may find it in town but even that is a gamble- bring it!
**Change your currency to pesos prior to entering Holbox. There is only one place to do it on the island (which may or may not be open) and the rate wasn't great, but it was better than at the Cancun airport.
**MIND THE FERRY SCHEDULE: I can not stress this enough... if you miss the ferry you do not get to the island; the "9 Hermanos" ferry took about 20 minutes to cross over to the island

Room Tip: lower level rooms really do not have any kind of ocean view but even so, they are only steps from th...

Loved every minute of my stay here- wish I could have stayed much longer! Still managed to pack in a fishing trip, making cevice from the fish we caught, and chilling on a pristine island with a flock of flamingos. Highly recommend for couples!

Holbox is magical!!! It is beyond beautiful! ...and this is the place to stay in Holbox... it is far enough from downtown Holbox to feel apart and at peace enjoying the amazing beach, but close enough to go there in a golfcart or even walk for dinner. We used both, and prefered walking because you walk along the beach in a path where you get to see the other hotels and conclude that Villa Flamingos is the best! The rooms are simple but beautiful. Predominantly white, with an amazing shower that has a perforated tree trunk instead of shower head. There is a comfortable sitting area with a hammock over looking the ocean outside the bungalow. A delicious breakfast is included with pancakes, chilaquiles and more to choose from. All with the friendliest and nicest staff ever. They have hammocks overlooking the beach and iguanas living around the swimming pool. Nature at its best! the only thing i could say it thata cold front brought all these seaweed to shore, literally tons of it and it began to decompose on the shore which caused a very bad smell and it couldn't be removed. Sometimes the smell was such that laying on the front hammocks by the beach was not an option. I suggest call in advance and make sure there is no seaweed on the beach, that would make your stay unforgettable !
A great place otherwise!

Room Tip: Call to make sure there is no seaweed or sargasso on the sea shore because it causes a very bad smel...

We booked out Villas Flamingos for our friends and family to join us in celebrating our wedding in mid-March. While it was logistically challenging planning a wedding on a relatively remote island we'd never been to, Ivan was amazingly patient and answered all our queries. Once we arrived, we realised that Villas Flamingos was just as beautiful as all the photos suggested, and a perfect place to spend time with family and friends. All the staff were absolutely amazing and helped us put on several great events (BBQ dinner, beach party, wedding) over the weekend. The owner was on-site during our entire stay and was phenomenal at responding to last minute queries and oversaw everything to make sure it was all going to plan. The food was delicious, the rooms were gorgeous, the atmosphere was fantastic and we couldn't have asked for anything more.

Holbox is not for all tourists. Its a small comunity, no big roads or big restaurant chains ... And that its the way it should remain. It has an amazing charm. The alternatives in food are great, italian, local, etc. VF rooms are spacious, have a/c which in certain times of the year is basic due to mosquitos. One must be aware of its eco-toilet system, which the administration mentioned would be remodeled. No tv and no wifi-mania which allows you to disconect and enjoy. The pool its nice, the hammocks by the sea a great detail. Its not in downtown, so a walk or a gulfcar ride is required. Super recomendable!

We were really pleased with our choice on Holbox.
Villa Flamingos is situated on the nicest stretch of beach (no golf carts going past and lovely views of ocean/sandbank), and really peaceful at night - we all slept like logs.
Its a well designed/landscaped hotel- our bungalow was lovely (particularly good sheets/mattresses) and the pool/beach area too. There were always enough beds and they were near enough together to feel sociable if you wanted, or quiet if not.
Great atmosphere, even on the windy days (Holbox is gorgeous in the sunshine but the wind can be really intense, on those days you pretty much have to stay in your hotel - so make sure you like it!).
The staff were wonderful, in particular the manager Ivan, and waiters Rene and Clark. Friendly, relaxed and helpful without being in your face. Will definitely be back.
