Petit Bacaye was everything I expected and pretty much as described on the packet- but this was far far from any kind of packaged or resort holiday experience!
Booking independently, direct with the hotel and flights with Virgin, I took my boyfriend there as a surprise trip and we had a fantastic time. Originally we were going to holiday at Rendezvous in St Lucia, but after discovering this little gem, I am really glad we chose Petit Bacaye (esp after later reading the reviews of the Rendezvous on this website). This is not an all inclusive resort – this is as self-described – a romantic hideaway for the independent traveller.
I heard about it by visiting the owners other hotel, The Onion Store in the New Forest, UK. I was won over by the luscious description and photos on their website and hoped we would be transported into paradise. I was not disappointed. From booking to the checking out, the whole experience was smooth and a pleasure. The owners Peter and Julie, made sure all our demands were met and our on-site host Liza made sure all these were implemented to the highest standard.
The ride from the airport shows many different sights from the local school kids and roadside pubs to the devastation Hurricane Ivan caused in Sep 04, but when approaching the road (dirt track almost) to Petit Bacaye and you first catch a glimpse of the bay, it takes your breath away.
Petit Bacaye sits on a beach and you are never more than 50 yards away from the soothing waves and the walk from the accommodation to the sea is through a lovely garden. Out of the 4 Beach Huts and the Spice House, we chose the Plantation Suite, which was a spacious room with a fantastic shower room, which opened into a small garden so you felt you were showering outside whist still maintaining absolute privacy.
The food was great. The flavours were lovely and some dishes were different to what we normally would have which is all about going to new places. There was limited choice on the menu but this changed each day and you were confident that they would do their best to provide you with anything you wanted if what was on offer were not to your taste. I am vegetarian and my meals were well planned and had fantastic balance of textures and flavours. For those who love fish, like my partner, this was caught fresh everyday off the beach and served in a variety of different ways.
We ate out a few times at other restaurants (inc True Blue Bay, La Sagesse & The Aquarium) which did offer a wider choice, but none which really sounding appealing or much different to what we can eat at home, so were happy to be back at Petit Bacaye at meal times as at least we knew we would have a varied, interesting and filling meal. A fav of mine was the chilled curried banana soup.
The beach was lovely but phaps this was my only disappointment. Going to the Caribbean, I imagined pure white shores with bright blue sea (which can be found on the other side of the Island in St George’s). The beach at Petit Bacaye lies on the Atlantic Ocean and is very natural and did have some debris on it, but not waste, just natural seaweed and driftwood and the sea kicked up the sand so the sea was a little murky, but this did not prevent swimming and snorkelling as the water was clean. As all beaches in Granada are public, this is not a private beach, but it certainly felt like it was. Some days we did not see another soul apart from the friendly waiters who brought us drinks (beautiful spiced rum cocktails) – perfect for those who want to just enjoy eachother or for a honeymoon destination.
If you want total relaxation in a truly romantic setting, then this is a wonderful place to just hang around and do as you please. With only 6 rooms, you really feel as if you have the place to yourself and can experience complete privacy. If you are looking for a more adventurous time, then although Petit Bacaye makes a wonderful base, you will need a jeep to travel to other beaches where water sports take place – this is easily arranged by the staff, so should not put you off, but it is wonderful to just be there and experience the magic. The days we did go out, it always so nice to head down the hill back to our beach and serene gardens.
I am half tempted not to place a review as I do feel it is a little treasure worth keeping to ourselves so it keeps its hideaway ideals, but Petit Bacaye deserves to be shouted about and others the chance to experience its delights.
