Great rual location for one who wants to sample local life. Accommodation lovely, beach not as good as we had hoped. Walked out to island and swam in warm nylon pools. Depending on tide there is a lot of seagrass. Fishermen bring in local catches which you can buy and BBQ at your thatched apartment. Peter and Julia very hospitable and helpful. Be careful a lot of bitty insects go prepared possibly use the local stuff "OFF" can be purchased from local supermarkets. Note the bar/restaurant is only open from 11-5 each day but you can pre-order your meals and they will bring them to you to warm in microwave. Food is lovely - rum punches to die for!!! Go for a cottage with an elivated view for evening drinks. All very tranquil if you want an away from it all holiday - car a necessity. Local supermarket is walkable. Kitchen well equiped and open shower with banana tree very different. If it's what you want you will enjoy it - but remember open windows attract insects so keep the lights low and the candles burning. Sounds at night are to die for - well I enjoyed them.

we have been to Petit Bacaye now 3 times and cannot recommend it highly enough. The most fantastic holiday ever and my husband is Grenadian so he knows locally whats good. Its not a place to go if you don't like rustic local conditions or wonder why mosquito's bite..................but if you want local brilliance, friendly service, quiet and relaxing times on the beach there is no -where better
5 stars all round especially for Spare the hotel dog!

Petit Bacaye is not 5* luxury it is a 5* experience that you should not miss, it is a one off, it is impossible to compare with other hotels or holidays. We have stayed at some of the finest and most luxurious hotels in the world and cruised on a 6* decadent luxury liner. Petit Bacaye is up there with the best not for its decadence or luxury but for its originality.

Having read all the previous reviews we knew what to expect at Petit Bacaye. Peace and quiet, no hassle, good food, laid back atmosphere, nice people.

We spent the first 12 nights in the Spice House then 2 nights in the Granadilla, both had their own unique charm.

On arrival we were through customs and immigration in 5 minutes (this is a world record for Grenada it can take hours but we travelled XL One “up the front” and on the advice of Julia legged it to the arrivals hall. The hotel taxi was waiting for us and we were whisked away to the hotel about 20 minutes away. We were shown to the Spice House by Natasha (De Manager), had everything explained and then we hiked up to the supermarket, 15 minute slow walk, for the basics. We had arranged a lobster salad in advance which was excellent, for the rest of the holiday we ate in the restaurant at lunchtimes. The food was excellent and I mean outstanding in quality and flavours. A sample is as follows: curried banana soup, yam and fish pie, jerk chicken, red snapper, lobster and fresh fish done in many ways, salads to die for.

The restaurant fish was bought from the fishermen on a daily basis, we even bought a 4lb strawberry grouper which they filleted total cost EC$32 about £6 and cooked it ourselves.

Most days we stayed local and flopped in the sea every now and again. We caught the local minibus, 20 minutes, to St George’s market on the Saturday which was driven we believe by Lewis Hamilton’s cousin and had lunch at Tout Bacaye on the waterfront, not too bad. Another day we caught the bus to La Sagesse Hotel and beach, beach was excellent restaurant not too bad. One evening we went to the Gary Rhodes restaurant, don’t expect “Le Manoir au Quat Saison” or the Ivy, but the food was very good. Another evening we spent at the Le Phare Bleu, lovely atmosphere slightly better than Rhodes.

We found the local Grenadian people very friendly and got to know all the staff in Foodland.

The hotel staff were excellent we liked their laid back approach and willingness to please, plus their attention to cleanliness. The gardens are magnificent and well kept by Kevlon. There was a security guard at night god knows why this is one of the safest places in the world.

The owners the lovely skinny Julia and the very skinny Peter made us very welcome and were helpful in all aspects of organising trips and advice. Also their dog Spare did not bark at customers!!!

Upsides
Virtually everything apart from the downsides

Downsides:
1.
Taxi drivers in St Georges who were complete pests with their hassle.

2.
Mosquitoes

Conclusion
The Goverment could solve both these problems by regular spraying.

My husband and I stayed at the Spice House in May 2006, the rooms were spotless and the service was excellent. We arrived late in the evening a day early and called from the airport and the manager was waiting to show us our room and had a plate of cold foods waiting for us We stayed a week and got to know and love the entire staff of Petit Bacaye. They treated us like family and made us feel extremely welcome. The food was excellent and we rarely ate anywhere else. They were very attentive. We had a very memorable vacation and I would gladly go again.

It does look idyllic but there are problems. We went there for our second week on the island, expecting, from what we had read, 'barefoot luxury'. Luxury it is not! The cabins are pretty but TINY and the problems start when darkness falls, as another reviewer said. There is nowhere to go after supper, other than back to your 'rondavel' and to be in there you must lie on the bed under the mosquito net or get bitten and you need to have the window louvres open for air or any breeze that's around as it can get quite muggy. They do provide sprays, but obviously they are less effective unless you can close up the room (there is a portable fan). Our taxi driver had said there might be mosquito problems as the gardens had a lot of crab holes (in which mozzies breed) - which to be fair they did try to fill in as much as possible - and was also next to a swamp. Peter and Julia started off by being charming but got increasingly frosty in the face of our concerns about mozzies and when we finally decided to leave after the first night and return to our previous hotel they were clearly very annoyed (despite the fact that they were fully paid for the week). The beach was pretty but you had to wade out through much mud and seagrass underfoot before you could swim which was not pleasant. We were NOT expecting aircon, wifi, swimming pools and sun loungers etc etc, but we couldn't take the wildlife and the crampedness of the accommodation so paid extra to go elsewhere!
