La Sagesse

My sister and I wanted to go somewhere hot place so that we could have a complete rest after a long year and my sister's boyfriend moored his yacht in Grenada and recommened La Sagesse. I also checked the Trip Advisor site to make sure and the reviews were positive.

I normally booked into 5* hotels so I was a bit nervous! I didn't have to be as it was truly wonderful. We woke in the morning and I nearly screamed at how close the sea was. Neither of us are very good swimmers but the bay is very shallow so we practiced swimming every day in lovely warm waters.

Mike the owner took us out shopping a few times and organised a boat trip and the tour of the island so you don't need a car.

We stayed in the lower ground of the pink house which had high ceilings and tiled floors. All the accommodation was close to the beach and this was empty for the week we were there.

The food at La Sagresse was great so we didn't venture out. Just to flag that you will need strong repellent in the evenings as the area is a nature reserve with jungle surrounding it.

We did visit the other hotels in the area but the beaches have unsaviour people loitering around and hawkers. We felt very nervous when we arrived back from our boat trip in the evening and had to walk on the beach to get back to our collection point

As only 12 people can stay at La Sagesse no one unsaviour ventures onto the beach!

If you want peace and quiet and to unwind this is the place to come to.

If you're looking for 5* luxury, a resort with plenty of entertainment near to some lively nightlife, stay away from La Sagesse. If, though, you are looking for a truly beautiful location, full of peace and quiet, but staffed by people who are genuinely friendly and care, and right on a perfect Caribbean beach, then La Sagesse is THE place.
It is a bit out of the way, but with a car (reasonably priced) you can easily cover the Island in a few days. As others have said, Mr Boney's tour is a must and the local buses are also well worth trying. There's always someone to talk to.
The food is not cheap but it is good and fresh. On a couple of days we watched boats come up to the hotel and drop off lobsters and fish which we ate that night at dinner.

I purchased the trip to Grenada as a surprise trip for my boyfriend's birthday and we couldn't have been more pleased with my choice to stay
at La Sagesse over the rest of the resort accommodations near the (touristy) Grand Anse. Yes, it's a distance from the 'nightlife action' in St. George's, but you hardly miss the choice with the excellent dinner options and delicious beverages at the on site ocean view restaurant/bar. In the four nights that we ate there, the specials always coordinated with the fresh catch of the day (our favourite being the sesame encrusted yellow fin tuna). For breakfast we started the day with a hearty Spanish omelet and also built up an addiction to nutmeg jam.

The co-owner, Mike, offered us a ride to the Grand Anse one day as he had to go into town to run errands and gave us a short tour of the beautiful university and view of St. George's in the process. Grand Anse seemed to consist of a sea of resorts and some strip malls. Quite an amusing sight was one of the most expensive resorts on the island having a KFC and appliance store right outside the front gates.
From there it was an easy and quick bus ride to St. George's (a bustling urban waterfront) and another longer cross-rainforest bus to Grenville (a smaller more 'authentic' town) and back to La Sagesse. All in all it cost maybe $15 EC (about $6 US) to take the local buses for this tour and the reggae buses are well worth every penny; screeching around winding mountain roads and packed to the brim with non-tourists.

Since we were short on time, we took advantage of a 1/2 day tour with Mr. Boney (Grenadians often have humorous, overly honest nicknames for each other), which was well worth the $25US/hr cost. We had heard from other travelers that he would be able to show you the Mona Monkeys of the island, but as we pulled through the Grand Etang National Forest with not a monkey in sight, I have to say that we were (wrongly) skeptical. With a series of car horn beeps and calls of "Yo" into the forest, the first monkey (the son, named Small Face) arrived to a reward of bananas followed by Mr Boney's 'friend' of the past 17yrs, Loverboy. They were friendly and seeing them in the wild was well worth the money spent alone, especially when you consider the cost of petrol on the island and the constant mountainous roads.

Afterwards, we were taken on a long and arduous hike to see the Seven Sisters falls, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone who is not overly agile as the path can get quite steep and slippery, to be expected as it is through the rainforest. We were lucky to be accompanied for all 2+ miles by a 5 month old grey kitten, that Mr. Boney went back to carry over two river so that it could keep along. Through the trip we learned of the history of the island from someone who had lived it and were shown and taught about every kind of plant/tree/
fruit that we came across; he really does a spectacular job and as a guide and protects you from potential scams found at some of the nature locations.

"A certain type of person chooses to stay at La Sagesse," Mr. Boney expressed perfectly. If you want AC, a gigantic room furnished to the nine, TV/cable, and all the luxuries of a grand resort, you're not going to find that here. But if you would prefer a more authentic and relaxing Grenadian holiday run by personable and friendly people than this may be the place for you.

The water is fairly still and warm, the beach is beautiful and often felt secluded, the staff was warm and helpful, the property and flora are stunning, not to mention the bed was the most comfortable on which
we've ever slept and the sound of the ocean, tree frogs and insects at
night lulled us to sleep in a way that we've never before experienced.

In a nutshell, as I've rambled on enough, we'd love to return and will
forever recommend this island/guesthouse to our friends/acquaintances.
Thanks a million Mike, for lending us the guitar, caring to learn our names, and everything ;)

In June my wife and I stayed there for a full week, and after staying there, I can't image staying anywhere else. We spent a long time researching places to stay, and based off of books and internet reviews we picked La Sagesse because it looked like it was a good balance between quality, a little off the beaten path and private with no kids. It turned out to be more of a wonderful getaway then we thought, and turned out to be much better then we could have hoped.

The hotel is small, with 3 small buildings and the restaurant / office has a huge nature area on one side, and is right on the beach on the other. When I say it's right on the beach, I mean that if I took a running jump off of our veranda, I could have landed in the ocean at high tide. We were in Ocean 1 (The view is spectacular from there) which was smallish, but was a perfect size for the two of us with a nice outside veranda. There are no TV's, no clocks, radios or internet connections in the rooms (Altho there is an open Wi-Fi network near the office) which came as a shock to us, a shock that we quickly got over and grew to embrace. The rooms are surround by lush gardens, with fruit and coconut bearing palm trees. The groundskeeper Jeff will even get you whatever's edible that day if you ask him, or if you just happen to be in his general vicinity when he's near one of them. There are 2 dogs, Ollie and Shaina, who never barked at any of the hotel guests that I saw, but would sometimes bark at some of the locals. Both were quiet friendly and act as escorts whenever their sleeping schedule allows.

The beach was very private, we went at the beginning of the off season and we would usually have it all to ourselves or maybe with one other couple. We were never approached by vendors, and rarely saw the locals or many other tourists. Since it's in a bay, the water is fairly calm and warm, we swam everyday and most evenings.

There are a few trails in the area west of the hotel, and if you're lucky, one of the dogs will take you on a guided tour, We had an awesome afternoon of being led around the hills by Shaina. There is also a black sand beach with some rough water that you can get to, I don't recommend body surfing over there.

Getting into town is easy, but be prepared to walk since the bus stop is on the main road a half a mile or so up a road. But the walk itself is really nice, with a plantation on one side, and more amazing nature on the other. If you time it right, sometimes you can grab a lift at least to the bus stop by the mangers. Some days we never even left the hotel, since the restaurant is so damn good. We ate breakfast every morning there (where I grew an almost crippling addiction to the nutmeg jam) and most dinners. It's a little on the pricey side, but well worth it. The bar also really does have the best Rum Punch on the island, and very cheap for the kick it delivers.

One really nice touche was the hotel will send their driver "Boney" to come pick you up at the airport, and it's a hell of an introduction to Grenadian driving, they also hold the kitchen open for you so when you get there your food there waiting for you. Boney also gives a great tour of Grenada, if you go make sure to ask him questions, as he knows a great deal about the island. He will even take you to feed the Monkeys that live in the nature preserve.

If you search flickr for pictures ( [--] ) you can see a bunch of photos of the place (including mine). You can also visit my page ( [--] ) to see more of Grenada.

We saw alot of the island, and some of the other hotels, and I'm very glad we stayed here. If you don't have kids, you really should try and stay at La Sagesse. It was an amazing experience, and we hope to come back someday.

    • Liked — The atmosphere is laid back and you really fell like you are at home, not just another tourist. And the view from our room was simply stunning.
    • Disliked — Being RIGHT there on the beach made it hard to sleep sometimes, since the surf can get loud. But still, I'd rather hear the surf than cars and people.

The first time we visited Greneda we decided to marry there, anyone who visits. who loves Carribean Islands, would know why we fell in love whith the island........

After many years of planning we booked our wedding in Grenada just before the terrible hurricane Ivan, but mother nature took her course and the devastation meant that we couldnt marry there as as planned.
We were married in St Lucia instead and decieded we would honeymoon in Greneda instead, we scoured the internet looking for places not devasted by the hurricane.
We came accross La Sagasse..........

What a perfect location, a little gem that you always hope will never change.

If you are looking for a friendly, tranquil setting that has great food and hospitality which is also very romantic then go to La Sagasse.

Will post some photos soon.....
