We had a great visit last year when the location changed from the cricket stadium to the Spice Basket. It is packed with cricket memorabilia through the ages of West Indies Cricket and some amazing photographs. But there is more than just cricket and it was great to learn a bit more about this lovely island.
The West Indies Cricket Heritage Museum (or High Five as it is also known) in the Grenada National Stadium, run by a gentleman called Phil Daniels, is an absolute mecca for anyone who is interested in the history of the West Indies Cricket Team and in cricket in the Caribbean in general.
The museum has items from the early 1800’s up to the Cricket World Cup in 2007 (you couldn’t begin to put a price on the things contained in here they are so rare – mostly one offs).
Mr Daniels gave my wife & I a very comprehensive tour of the Museum which lasted all of 2 hours (and we still weren’t finished) and his knowledge of West Indian cricket seems to know no bounds – if only the present team were as passionate about the West Indies as he is then they would be world beaters yet again.
The Museum also carries a range of merchandise for sale and Mr Daniels is hoping to add more items for sale
Whilst in the Museum, Mr Daniels invited us to attend 2 One Day Internationals between the West Indies A team and Pakistan A team that were being played at the Stadium, whom also arranged to meet us prior to entering the Stadium for the first match.
He duly met us and got us to our seats (no entrance fee for both games) and left us to enjoy ‘de cricket man’.
He even arranged for me to be able to take photos of the West Indies squad before the match started and got me the West Indies team’s autographs
To say this was one of the highlights of our holiday would be an understatement – to be able to sit amongst the West Indian fans was an experience we will never forget – they have to be the most passionate cricket fans in the world – staying in Scotland we normally only see the guys ‘live’ on TV but to see them playing in the flesh (as well as meeting (Ravi Rampaul & Andre Fletcher) and recognising the bigger named players in the team) was a real joy – so much so my wife is now the world’s newest West Indies fan – Richie Richardson style floppy sun hat and all!!!
