“1.5 Miles Off The Main Road, a World Away”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2010

Jungle Roots set in the jungle on a hillside next to the Bamboo River literally 1.5mi off the main road. Everything previous entries have said about it is absolutely true. The location is isolated and beautiful with no sounds of "city life", Pat and Staci are wonderful, and tours are great.

We (wife and I) stayed in the Kai Pais next to the river. It was awesome! A patio on side with table and chairs, and the sound of the river rushing 24/7. Especially soothing at night was listening to the constant sound of river and the insects coming to life at night. The jungle sounds could be overwhelming for some (my wife had trouble sleeping the first night) but I had no problem. Bugs did not bother us at all and we slept with the windows open every night. There is a waterfall on the property across the road ~200ft from our Kai Pais which has a pool to take a dip in or get an inter-tube like me and sit for a couple hours drinking some local beer "Kubuli".

As far as Pat and Staci it was like staying with family that you actually liked being around. Talking with them about Dominican life and Caribbean life in general was very interesting for us Californians who had never been to the West Indies. "Captain Pat" a former day cruise boat operator in US Virgin Islands had an entertaining and funny story for just about everything. While Staci who was so nice and caring mesmerized us with her magnificent cooking everyday. She makes her own bread daily with great food and gears the meals around your personal preferences. Both went out of there way to make our visit to Dominica as wonderful as possible including picking us up from airport and taking us to our next destination on the island (about a 30-40 min drive away).

I would definitely recommend Jungle Roots for any nature loving person. If you don't enjoy being and living within nature (dense jungle to be more specific) then you may not enjoy this place. They (Pat and Staci) give you 5-star treatment on every level and I would come back for sure on my next visit to Dominica.

*Also note that Dominica (and Jungle Roots in particular) is safe with nice people smiling and saying "hello-hello" on every end of the island.

**Make sure to go to Sari Sari falls if possible. Pat and Staci took us there and it was the most amazing waterfall I have ever seen.

We arrived at Roots Jungle Retreat following a stay at three other places across the island. We set it as our last site due to location to the airport. Our host, Pat, so graciously picked us up from our place across the island. We knew we had arrived as soon as we saw the beautiful, natural, and artful accommodations (see the pictures). Words can’t describe how much Pat and Staci went beyond the limits in preparing a comfortable, well equipped, cozy jungle retreat. Quickly we saw that we definitely saved the best for last. Some of the highlights were tasty meals prepared deliciously by Staci, daily views of the Sisserou parrots just above Pat and Staci’s place (we thought we had to give up the idea of seeing these parrots earlier), tubing with Pat, a tour of and visit with the Caribe Indians and opportunity to purchase their beautiful baskets, a swim at the waterfall that is onsite, beautiful flowers greeting us in our kai pai, and daily hikes that take you back in time fooling you into thinking you are in Jurassic Park. My best nights of sleep were there. But really the best part of the trip was Pat and Staci’s stories and conversations. Unlike our other hosts, Pat and Staci spent time with us- sharing tales of their past and current adventures (and there are many) and their involvement with the people of Dominica. Ask Pat about female pirates!! As if you could not tell by now, we give Roots Jungle Retreat our highest recommendation.

It really is, with cabins that are built the way the Indians used to live., but all the amenities of home. Lights, water from the river, pure and clean, confortable clean cabins in a jungle! I stayed in a Kai Pai with a loft and I could actually have lived there for ever. Cooking facilites are included in the kai pai with a loft and bathroom. I fell asleep to the jungle sounds and the river rushing by. A perfect climate. I loved Staci's gourmat cooking! Something new every meal. The excursions that they can take you on range from hiking to waterfalls and hidden lakes to diving. I particularly loved the snorkeling and diving that they showed me. It is so SAFE yet remote and beautiful. You won't hear any of the sounds of city life. I can't wait to go back. Maybe January?

Every time I go to a new place someone says "you should have seen that place 30 yrs ago"... well Dominica is like going back 100 or more years in time.
I really recommend staying in the jungle and especially at Roots. They are in the trees, along side a river, completely in the wild. It is like being pampered in the middle of nature. The food is grown on property and prepared exceptionally well by an amazing cook. The rooms are charming and beautiful.
This is, however, only for those who love nature and the outdoors. If bugs freak you out you should probably stay somewhere else.

We had a wonderful time at Roots Jungle Retreat. The grounds are
absolutely stunning, deep in the heart of the rain forest, with a gorgeous river running through it that we lay in, drank from, and even bathed in. The kai-pai/cabin was
very cozy and clean, designed and built with taste and care. Pat & Staci were
excellent hosts during our stay - knowledgeable, helpful, warm and very friendly.
Staci is an incredible cook - every single meal she prepared was delicious. Pat and
Staci are also excellent tour guides. They took us on several expeditions around
Dominica, such as going to the beaches and waterfalls around the island, as well as
some snorkelling trips where they showed us many fascinating hard-to-find sea
creatures and amazing tropical fish. Everything about our stay was just perfect,
highest recommnedations.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Leave your everyday-world behind and join us in the magical jungle of Dominica. An untouched paradise where the air is clean, the water is fresh and the rainforest bursting with life. Right in the middle of it all you will find Roots Jungle Retreat. The perfect getaway for a natural, fun holiday, voted # 1 on Trip Advisor for the past year. Switch off your blackberry and experience the jungle sounds, the parrots and the fireflies, the refreshing water of the Bamboo river, and the beautiful organic food from our own jungle garden. We are 100% off the grid and eco-friendly. You will sleep in huts built by local Kalinago-Indians, with very comfortable bedding, as you need your rest after a day of fun. There are a million things you can do, but the great thing about Roots is that it’s also perfect for doing nothing at all. We are located next to the gorgeous Bamboo river and have our own swimming hole and little waterfall. You could just spend the whole day on the sundeck by the river reading a book. And we even have our own jungle style spa. We have built an Indian sweat hut for a nice detoxing experience. First you heat up until you start to sweat heavily, than you simply cool off in the river. Great for blood circulation and the immune system. But even more important: a great way to revive. More active visitors love to hike up the river. Further up on the mountain there is a bigger waterfall that is not reachable by road. You’ll have this magnificent place all to yourself! ... more   less
