“Has promise, but there are issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012 via mobile

The good - nice beach, nice pools, average fitness center. The units are large, nice spAcious bathrooms. The kitchens are ok, missing many items like knifes, cutting boards and the dishwasher doesn't work very well. Balconies very large. The bad the air conditioning does not work at all. I've complained twice and nothing happens. Really in a resort with four diamond rating? I'm writing this review from my unit in building 5 at 4 am because its 83 degrees and I cannot sleep. The air conditiong is set on the lowest setting and I've kept the shutters shut during the day to keep the sunlight out which is sad since there is a great view. The restaurants are good but I will never come here again because of the air conditioning and lack of a response to fix it. 83 degrees is ridiculous. It's a shame because everything else is good.

Dear camskate,
We are happy that during your stay you had an opportunity to experience Crane Beach as well as the pools across the resort.

Please accept my sincerest apologies regarding the inconsistencies you would experienced with the air conditioning. We are continuously working on our chillers to ensure that guest rooms are adequately cooled.

I wish to assure you that the lack of cooking utensils in your suite was a major oversight by our housekeeping department and I have spoken to the team to ensure that this will not occur again.

At The Crane, we aim to provide guest experiences that can be truly treasured and we will continue to make the necessary improvements to warrant such accolades from our guests.

We do regret that your stay did not meet your expectations and we do hope that you allow us another opportunity to create the true Crane Experience for you.

Warm wishes,

We have visited Barbados 8 times, and previously stayed at The Sandy Lane or Royal Pavillion. We just returned from a week at The Crane where I booked a 2 bedroom oceanfront suite. We arrived to no welcome, no rum punch, and no orientation. The elevator to our room in The Palmetto building was in need of cleaning. The rooms did not have adequate air conditioning. The bathrooms had extremely poor lighting and the cheapest and smallest of towels. There was no turn down service or bottled water. Two of three toilets did not work well enough. Some batroom windows needed serious cleaning. There were no pool attendants for set up services or food or drink services. Each guest is only allowed one towel, so once you use it for chair coverage you are at a loss for how to dry after a swim. Everywhere we walked we saw some sign of disrepair...workers, machines, orange net fencing. It would seem maintenance should be preformed prior to the beginning of tourist season. On Wednesday we were left a note from management that there would be a planned maintenance on our building for Thanksgiving Day...therefore, no water from 9 to 5. As it turned out we had no hot water all day that Thursday, through 1:00 the following day when we checked out. Had I been told about this planned maintenance when I booked the trip I would not have chosen this resort. Hot water is not a luxury it is a basic provision.

Restaurant service and food were spotty, though Janell was of great service at breakfast. I had requested a birthday mention for Thursday evening, but it was totally forgotten. The best restaurants are not on this side of the island. To travel to the east side is a cab fare of $40 each way.

The resort is situated in a beautiful spot and both the ocean and pool water were enjoyable. The pools could have been better maintained, however.

Overall, I could not recommend this property. It is in serious need of management and maintenance to a higher standard. Though rooms were spacious and staff was friendly, this just could not over compensate for all the shortcomings.

Room Tip: Oceanfront have the best views. Other views to gardens or town are sobering.

Dear patvoveris,

Firstly, let me apologise that The Crane did not live up to your service expectations on your Barbados holiday.

I can assure you that the inconsistency you experienced during check-in is a gross departure from our established procedures. Each guest to The Crane is welcomed and offered a complimentary beverage usually a non alcoholic fruit punch or rum punch and then escorted to their Residence. I have personally looked into this and briefed the staff of this service break down and the importance of adhering to the check in process.

During your stay we were required to upgrade the hot water system and we apologise that the maintenance work took a bit longer than expected. We are currently conducting a series of small maintenance projects across the resort to ensure that we continue to operate at high level. During maintenance work we do our utmost to ensure that there is minimal disturbance to our guests.

Just one quick clarification, Crane guests may opt to secure an additional towel card which will allow you to obtain additional towels during your stay.

Despite the fact that The Crane was not what you were looking for, we do hope that you return to Barbados for many more holidays.

Warm wishes,
Michael Phillips

My wife and I stayed with some friends at The Crane for two nights this November because it was recommended by many both local to Barbados or from where we're traveling in Canada. Their advice was spot on, here's our quick review:

Check-in: A breeze. We had our room keys within minutes and were rum-punched up (super good) immediately.

Pools: Absolutely lovely. There are 5+ pools located on multiple levels of the grounds. The bedding beside the pools was selectively placed with adequate amounts of shade and sun (for whatever your looking). Some of the pools also had spectacular views of the ocean. There were no swim-up-bars, but the restaurant beside the top pool was close enough to provide any libations.

Grounds: The grounds are nothing short of gorgeous. The mix of new-style architected buildings plus old-style made the feel of the resort quite nice. The large (20+ person) whirlpool in the midst of the open four walled structure overlooking the ocean ... wow! We also really enjoyed the "town-like" feel of the buildings where the restaurants and open air bar are located. The bar was great, but very quiet and could have used a bit more room or livelier music to draw in people. Even a pool table, dart board or another form of entertainment was something we chatted about while enjoying a glass of wine.

Restaurants: L'Azure was fabulous, the food outstanding, and the view even better. Zen was excellent, but coming from a Sushi-laden location we call home, the prices caused minor heartattacks. It's definitely worth trying as the food quality is amazing.

Beach: The beach is beautiful. Although it's a public beach, access to it isn't just a quick park and a stroll for the locals so it's typically more of a tourist beach for the resort. An elevator ride or quick jaunt down the stairs and you arrive at a white sand, fairly quiet beach. The waves on this south east coast of the island can get a little rough so be prepared to go to battle if you hop in for a quick dip. My wife lost a bathing suit (R.I.P.) to a rogue wave that frantically had me pulling up her bottoms and doing the "uh what do I do" cover up of her top before a second rogue indulged us with a greeting. Suggest you get the rum punch drinks out of fresh fruit on the beach. They're quite strong, but very, very tasty!

Room: We stayed in a ground level room (2 bedroom) a bit further back from the beach that included a secluded plunge pool and whirlpool, plus outdoor gazebo area. We made use of it during both days of our stay and enjoyed the stars at night. Truly relaxing over a bottle of champagne! The living room and bed room both opened up to the outdoors and made for a great fresh air feel. The second bedroom included two single beds and absolutely no decor whatsoever. We felt that a little odd. The suite included a full kitchen/dining area as well, which was quite convenient.

Note, the mosquitos here are a real pain in the butt, so bring bug repellant en masse. That would probably be our biggest gripe about the resort to be honest.

Would we go back? Yes. We'd try a beach-front, ground level 1 or 2 bedroom with pool for our next trip.

Room Tip: Make sure you go to Zen for dinner and order the Spicy Tuna Pizza. It's not on the menu and more...

We are especially happy when guests have an opportunity to experience a number of amenities across the resort including our array of award winning dining options, the notable Crane Beach and of course the luxuriously appointed Residences!

We just came back from an eight day stay at The Crane Residential Resort in Barbados. This was our first time going to Barbados and our first time staying at The Crane, but it will not be our last. The Crane resort is just beautiful, sitting on the cliff about 65 feet above the very blue Atlanta Ocean. We played in the amazing clear blue water and surf for hours everyday and sleep like a babies, in our one bedroom ocean front suite (unit 934) after a day at one of the best Beaches in the World. We would just spend hours sitting out on our balcony looking at the ocean. The Crane has one, two and three bedroom units starting with the older 100 building which is the original hotel from the 1900's which is beautiful but does not have central air. Next are the eight newer (2005/6) building (200’s-900’s) that are each 4 stories tall and all face the Atlanta Ocean. The newer build all look like they are all from the 1900's but with stainless steel kitchens, six piece travertine baths and old world mahogany furniture’s this units are incredible. There is some updating work going on at the Crane when we were there, to improve the look of the resort and customer services but all work was done when we were at the beach. The Crane also has some a few units in what is called the Park that are not Ocean front units, but very nice building 1000-1200.
Next service, the customer service and work ethic of the whole staff at the Crane is truly unbelievable, from the General Manager down to the beach staff everyone worked to make our stay at the Crane the best Week of our Lives.
Food, There are four great restaurants at the resort, first for breakfast there is the Sunday Gospel Breakfast at L’Azure, outstanding food and music over looking the Ocean. Next for lunch there is the Carriage House and it has fresh fish and sandwiches at the top of the ridge, overlooking the resort and ocean. For dinner there is Zen’s (Japanese/Thai), L’Azure (international and the best seafood) and D’Onofrios (Italian). We also when to other restaurants in the town of Oistins on Wed/Friday for Seafood (checkout Pat’s, the line is long but the food is worth it. Cutter’s also is just down the beach from the Crane for lunch and dinner and the food at the Harbour lights is also great.
To make a long story short, the eight days we spend in Barbados at the Crane what one of the best weeks of my life and I what to personal thank everyone at the Crane, our driver Cat m.h.k.ktaxiservice@hotmail.com and the people of Barbados for everything they did for us.
Thankyou

The property is breathtaking, on a hilltop along the ocean. Ocean views from many rooms and from common outdoor areas. A large property in a gated community, with a beautiful beach (small, but lovely) below on the north end of the property. We stayed in the "historic hotel" section, in a 2 bedroom suite that was oddly configured (lockout bedroom but you can't lock the whole suite from the outside). The shower in the master suite was completely broken on checkin, someone came to look on Sunday and said it needed a part they didn't have but it would be fixed Monday. It didn't get fixed until Tuesday and we left Wednesday. By the time the shower was repaired we realized there wasn't enough hot water to last a full shower. But we had a lovely view from the balcony and were able to shower in our friend's bedroom. Their toilet didn't work too well. We met people in an adjoining room who didn't have air conditioning, so I was thankful that ours was working.

The restaurants were not bad, we preferred Azure for food and views - we had a few excellent meals there. We had one "ok" meal at Zen, most things were fine but the lobster was very overcooked. We got several apologies but were charged full freight. Lunch at the Carriage House was fine, nothing special, but the views from there are also stunning and worth it.

Checkin was an ordeal. They served us lovely rum punches (the best we've ever had), but we could still tell time.

The beach elevator was out of service the first day we arrived, but was back in service after that. Power went out in the coffee shop the next day so no coffee. The General Store onsight is fine for basics and beverages.

The beach is public but security guards keep the local hustlers within limits during the day. I would have loved to go down for a walk at night but didn't feel quite safe without the gendarmes.

There is almost nothing to do at night. There's a lovely indoor/outdoor pub but any entertainment (minimal while we were there) shuts down at 10 pm.

There was construction noise outside our room several days, waking us earlier than we'd have liked.

Still, despite all the negatives, we had a lovely, relaxing, romantic getaway.

Dear lluvhhi,

We certainly agree that The Crane Resort is a spectacular property set on a beautiful 40 acres of lush tropical landscape and we are pleased that you found the views to be breathtaking. We have looked into the matter regarding the hot water and since your suite is in the oldest part of our 125 year old hotel, it does have the quirks of any historic building.

Bar 1887 is our cocktail and piano bar and provides entertainment on select nights. For nightly entertainment, we encourage our guests to explore Barbados. St Lawrence Gap is approximately 25 minutes away from the resort and offers a variety of local bars and restaurants. A 15 minute drive from the resort will take you to Oistins which has a lively nightly street party with great food and local entertainment. We highly recommend a trip to Oistins especially any given Friday night when it is a hive of activity.

It was brought to my attention that construction was being carried out in the nearby Building 2 while you were on property; we did send correspondence to all guests in this Residence but unfortunately did not anticipate that noise levels would affect our guests in the Historic Residences.

We are happy to hear that despite a few hiccups you managed to have a ‘lovely, relaxing romantic getaway’ and look forward to welcoming you again soon!

Warm Regards,
Michael Phillips

My husband and I stayed at the Crane Hotel in Barbados in October 2012.

Pros: The hotel is beautiful and huge! The rooms are great, large and with all the amenitiies. We stayed in a garden room (one of the lower priced ones) and it was still excellent. The beach is beautiful and secluded so that hotel guests are pretty much the only people on it (minus a few locals selling coconuts drinks). Although the water is a little rough, it was not too much to handle. The food is good as well. We would highly recommend the japanese/thai restaurant. It requires reservations, but is definitly worth it. The hotel is very family and couple friendly. It has great pools too. The hotel has everything you could need. No need to venture out unless you are going on a catamaran cruise (which we highly recommend Cool Runnings!).

Cons: The location of the hotel is on the southeast side of the island. It is very secluded from night life, other restaurants, etc. Some excursions even charge more for picking you up at the crane. It can be a little pricey to stay here. However, it is much more expensive to stay on the south or west side of the island. We used priceline and got a really good deal. There are two places to eat breakfast most mornings. There is a buffet, which is very expensive and a little coffee shop that serves croissants. Be prepared for the service to be extremely slow at the restaurant. It wasnt a problem for us because we were in Barbados to relax, but it took us 2.5 hours one afternoon to be served lunch. As long as you are prepared, it is not too bad.

Overall, it was a great experience and we would definatly return. The seclusion is nice for a few days.

Room Tip: Any room is good. I'm not sure that the ocean view rooms are worth the money. You cant actually...

Dear Cathy J,

Thank you for choosing The Crane for your Barbados holiday, we are happy that you enjoyed your luxuriously appointed residences as well as the beach and dining at the resort. Zen restaurant has been named ‘# 1 for food in Barbados’ and continues to deliver excellent cuisine at competitive prices.

Many of our guests visit The Crane to enjoy the peace, tranquility and relaxing atmosphere that the south east coast of the island offers. We are no more than 15 minutes away from south coast which offers numerous restaurants, attractions and shopping facilities; and a mere 30 minutes drive will get you to the capital Bridgetown for duty free shopping.

We apologize for the wait during lunch and I can assure you that this is a gross departure from our established service procedures.

We are extremely happy that you will return to the island and look forward to welcoming you on your next trip!

Visited this wonderul resort for a family member's wedding. Everything was perfect, from Keisha, to Roddy at the beach, HSKP, guest services, front desk clerks, spa attendants, duty free associates, everyone we encountered displayed utmost professionalism and genuine service. All members of the wedding party had a great time. The beach was never crowded and if you wanted it all to yourself you can go from 5:30am-7:00am at this time of the year and no more than 3 or 5 people can be seen beach. Even during peak times there is always some where on the resort to get some R&R without being disturbed and I couldnt' be happier that we picked this time of the year to visit. The food was also top notch!

Although the waters can be rough, I consider myself an intermediate swimmer and had no difficulties. On our final day, my father unfortunately got knocked over by a large wave and cut his head. The beach attendants/life guards were quick to spot my father and provided assistance. Since he was left in such good hands I continued to enjoy whatever time I had left in the beach and left him with the life guards. Guest services sent an onsite nurse to tend to my father after he arrived to his room and provided a late check out until we departed to the airport. He is doing just fine and despite the accident he along with everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Crane made possible by the amazing staff and atmosphere.

I've read some of the reviews prior to my arrival and thanks to the GM's tips to some people who just seems to be complainers, we kept our two bedroom suite windows closed and the AC was just fine (maybe not as powerful as I'm use to back in Canada, but you're in the Carribean! and from a fellow hotel manager I can fully appreciate the challenges that may arise with a building that was built over a century ago!) The other buildings that the wedding guests stayed in had no such issues, in fact some of the ladies complained the AC was too powerful overnight and had to use their blankets. Even if the AC was broken (it wasn't) in room 231A&B I would not have trade it for another room, the views were amazing!

Definitely geared towards families & couples but I wouldn't say it's not for singles either. We ventured off the resort and Guest services arranged shuttle to transport us to different areas of the island anywhere from 15min-30min. If you are travelling with a bunch of singles I would highly suggest the Crane and pay the extra $$ for transportation as none of the resorts offer what the Crane have in scenery.

You may want to have someone look into the single bedroom in 231 shower, it only had hot water but I didn't care nor did I report it (sorry), I just used the one in the adjoining living room as I was more concerned of not wasting any minute of my time complaining about anything.

Thumbs up to all the staff and I'll definitely be returning!

Room Tip: If you need air conditioning that you are use to at home, choose the newer buildings. If you can ha...

Dear Paul W,

It was our pleasure to have you stay with us for your family’s wedding celebrations. We have shared your lovely comments with all the staff you mentioned and it has certainly brought a smile to their faces.

We are happy to learn that your father has since recovered and is doing well. Many of our staff members are trained in CPR and someone is always on resort to assist should our guests find themselves in difficult situations.

We have since looked into the water issue in your room and are pleased to report that the Engineering team has handled this.
