“Short but Sweet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2011

My wife, infant son and myself only spent a weekend, but thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The property is fabulous!! The staff were very helpful, and well mannered. The room was outstanding.
The only reason that I haven't rated this as excellent, is that one of our room phones wasn't working, and our wireless modem had problems as well. We later discovered that the hotel had suffered from a severe lightening strike a few weeks before our stay, which knocked out several rooms phone and internet service.
Highly recommend dinner at the restaurants, Zen is fantastic Thai and Sushi menu, and D'onofiros 'make your own pasta' menu is terrific.

We enjoyed our short stay so much, that we now own a week in the timeshare at The Crane Resort.

Room Tip: Ground Floor rooms have private pools that get sunlight, and as a result are ALOT warmer than the pr...

Dear Lindsay F,

We are delighted that your family enjoyed a “short but sweet” stay with us. The physical property is indeed “fabulous,” and combined with the warm and attentive service delivered by our employees, The Crane is the ideal vacation spot.

We are also pleased that you enjoyed several of our restaurants – Zen, L’Azure, D’Onofrio’s and The Carriage House - each of which offer a distinct dining experience.

Thank you for taking the time to post this review. We look forward to welcoming your family for many years to come!

Warm wishes,

I have to say that generally I really loved The Crane Resort, but there were a couple of anomalies that tempered our enthusiasm. Please note that although the date of our stay is indicated as April 2011, we actually stayed in April 2011...not sure why TripAdvisor won't let me change that. I’ll get “the bad” out of the way before getting to “the good”.

We did a lot of research into resorts on the island of Barbados, and once we identified The Crane as our resort of choice we did even more research to ensure we maximized our experience. After much consideration we identified two requirements – first, we wanted a suite with a small “plunge pool” on the balcony and second, we wanted a central location. To that end we requested a room in Building #2, and upon arrival we were assigned a room with a nice view over the pool and gardens, and a partial sea view. Building 2 is an older building dating to the original construction of the hotel which, in my opinion, added to the charm. However, these rooms have individual A/C units as opposed to the newer buildings that have central A/C, and the unit in our room was quite noisy. To make matters worse, the unit didn’t produce any cold air. After repeated visits from a maintenance person failed to resolve the issue we were moved to a new suite in Building 5, which, although very nice and very faithful to the original design, lacked the charm of the older, original buildings clustered around the centre of the resort. We had a very nice ocean view in the new room, a nice plunge pool, a very nice bathroom, and central air conditioning…which did not work during the entire week of our stay. Daytime temperatures in our room hovered around 25 degrees celcius and really, the only way to cool down in the evening was to open all the windows. This would have been fine had the humidity not been so high. Additionally, Building 5 is the furthest away from the centre of the resort so it was a hike to go to breakfast, the beach, etc. There, that’s the bad.

The Crane was wonderful in every other way. We did not meet a staff member who was not friendly and helpful, although I have to say that response to our A/C woes on the night of our arrival could have been more prompt. Our room was a fabulous mixture of dark wood and white walls, with comfortable furniture and modern appliances. Had we chosen to cook while we were there the fully-outfitted kitchen would have been more than adequate no matter the meal we had chosen to prepare. The kitchen was sort of wasted on us as the only thing we really used was the refrigerator for storing water, but I’m not sure that you can get a single room with a plunge pool – I think only suites have plunge pools but I’m not sure about that. The balcony is spacious with comfortable loungers, although it’s difficult to get any sun on the balconies because they’re relatively closed in. The plunge pool was cool and refreshing.

Food in the restaurants was very good. The buffet breakfast had plenty of variety including made-to-order egg dishes, plenty of fruits and pastries, and the best view in the Caribbean. We did not eat in Zen, but through a conversation we had on the beach with another guest we learned it is an excellent restaurant (albiet a shade on the expensive side) with gorgeous cliff-side views. Our pasta at D’Onifrio’s was very good, and other than ice cream that was the extent of our eating on the resort.

Shopping is quite varied. We were surprised at the number of shops on the resort property, with several more under construction. Prices were competitive with anything we saw in Bridgetown.

Speaking of Bridgetown, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the distance between the city and the resort. We had a rental car so I don’t know if there is a shuttle between the resort and Bridgetown, or the resort and the airport. It’s about a half-hour drive up the coast from the resort to Bridgetown proper, and if you’re not planning on eating at the resort plan for at least a twenty-minute drive to Rockley (St. Lawrence Gap) or Oistin. We made it our practice to plan to eat later in the afternoon while on our way back to the resort from wherever we had been during the day, and on the days we spent solely at the resort we ate there. My point is that if you want to go anywhere other than the resort you need a rental car, or learn the public transit system.

Huge pool area…there weren’t a lot of people at the resort during our stay so during the day the pool area felt deserted even though there were plenty of people there. I would hazard a guess that even if the resort was full there would still be lots of room for everyone. The grounds and gardens around the resort are beautiful and well maintained, although the open areas were quite brown. This is completely understandable considering the lack of rainfall in the months preceeding our visit – in fact, the island was very nearly under drought conditions. Still, it would be nice to be at the resort just past the end of the rainy season (not exactly sure when that is) once everything greened up but I certainly wouldn’t condone wasting irrigation water on those areas.

The beach, in our opinion, was the centerpiece of the resort. It is accessible from the resort via an elevator and a short walk, with plenty of resort-owned umbrellas and loungers to go around. Beautiful rainbow-hued golden sand, no coral, and bathwater-warm ocean made our time on the beach relaxing and enjoyable. The Crane maintains a small beach shack with friendly staff ready to escort you to your loungers, set and adjust the umbrellas, and offer up cold bottles of Banks when you’re thirsty.

Finally, although the fitness facility wasn’t very large it was still very well equipped with a nice selection of cardio equipment and universal machines, and had a good array of free-weight dumbbells.

In summary, if the air conditioning hadn’t been an issue I can’t imagine anywhere being a better place to stay while on Barbados.

Room Tip: If you're traveling with a young family, choose a ground-floor suite with a private pool facing...

Dear Bowles_D,

Thank you taking the time to post this review. We are pleased that you generally loved the resort. The Crane was designed to create an atmosphere of a home away from home with spacious floor plans, elegant yet comfortable décor and modern amenities. Note that all of our rooms from the Junior Garden View to the Two Bedroom Ocean View are suites featuring spacious kitchens/kitchenettes, marble bathrooms and large patios. Only the rooms in the Historic Hotel are different.

You will be pleased to note that the A/c situation has now been resolved, with several buildings being serviced by our brand new chiller.

The Village serves as the central hub of the resort, featuring several stores: Colombian Emeralds and Cave Shepherd provide convenient duty free shopping while Bar 1887, The Village Café (opened since last you were here), The General Store and D’Onofrio’s Pizzeria meet varied food and beverage needs. Also new (just opened) is Colorbox Photo Studio.

The Fitness Centre, also located in the Village, offers guests state-of-the-art FastTrack equipment such as treadmills, cyclone steppers, free weights, locker facilities, showers and towel service. The over 900 square feet centre is quite spacious with huge windows all along one wall with gorgeous views of the property.

Zen, our Thai and Japanese themed restaurant, is Zagat rated “No.1 in Barbados for Food.” You will find that in any country that imports most of its food, the costs will be higher than you would find in Canada.

We do hope to welcome you again – maybe you’ll have the chance to discover the mysteries of Zen.

Warm wishes,
Michael Phillips

We just returned from "The Crane" for a Thanksgiving week holiday. I travelled with my husband and our 2 sons, ages 14 and 12. We had a wonderful vacation at "The Crane." Upon check in, my husband and I were handed delicious rum punches and the children were also given tasty virgin punches which just immediately helped us to relax. We were amazed with our 2 bedroom, ocean view, plunge pool "residence." It was extremely spacious. It can't be beat, even when compared to family resorts. The suite was clean, the couches comfortable and it was equipped with every amenity. The boys don't really like to share anymore, but I heard no complaints with a king bed, and if there was a problem, the couches pulled out to a bed. We commented how it was all we need and we could have moved in. It was a perfect set up for traveling with "tweens." As our "residence" had a kitchen, we opted to eat breakfast and some lunches on our balcony, making our stay slightly economical and trying not to over eat. (We blew it at dinner) The resort had a general store with basic necessities, however, if you wanted to cook more, you may want to find another market. We loved opening the windows and closing the shutters and enjoying the breeze flowing through. I could not get over the beautiful view from our 4th floor room. We even woke up and watched the sun rise.

Our view and the resort was breathtakingly beautiful. It was well maintained with many pools to choose from, but, I loved the Crane beach. The sand truly is soft and white. The beach is on the southern part of the island where the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean sea meet, creating surf, yet somewhat protected by a coral reef. We completely enjoyed the surf. I agree, with another comment - it is exhilarating. Boogie boards were available for rental. Coming from the northeast US, we enjoyed the big waves, but in much warmer water than we usually swim. I could see where some people may find it intimidating. There were other guests with younger children, but they have to be watched carefully. There is a lifeguard. It is the ocean, so there were some days with seaweed, but the sea floor was soft, not rocky. Although we were on vacation, I did appreciate the washer and dryer in the room to remove the soft sand from our swim suits. I probably didn't need to pack as much thanks to laundry availability. It is humid - pack light and pack cotton. Some of my synthetic sundresses didn't breath and were hot.

We did also make use of the fitness center which we found well equipped.

The resort is located on the south eastern part of the island and is off the beaten track. If you like to walk out and have shopping and nightlife, this may not be the resort for you. We did eat at Zen, which was good and the gospel breakfast at L'Azure, although make sure you are not in line for food if you want to enjoy the singing. The view from L'Azure is gorgeous. We did eat at the pool side restaurant. Cutters, a deli style eatery, is clean and delivers lunch on the beach and is located walking distance from the resort and has a nice variety.

As the boys wanted to surf, we rented a jeep and surf boards and headed to Barrys Surf School for lessons. We drove around the island to sample other restaurants and found the people helpful and polite - the road signs could be better, but it made our journeys adventurous. The island is safe. We really felt like we got to know the island. Somehow, the boys didn't mind not having a kids or teen club. They were tired and just wanted to relax or watch TV in the evenings. The hotel did have some games available, or they went into the lobby and checked the computers.

The whole vacation was relaxing and wonderful. We created wonderful memories. We look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Suites with a plunge pool are on higher levels and have a nicer view. Suites are large and comfy an...

Dear Renia M,

Thank you so much for your wonderful (and thorough) review! You perfectly captured the essence of The Crane: spacious, luxurious accommodations, equipped with all the amenities you could ever want, set on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, away from the hustle and bustle.

It sounds as though you had an action-packed vacation even though it was relaxing overall. In between the adventures of surfing and exploring, we're very pleased that you were able to experience L'Azure's Sunday Gospel Breakfast and dinner in Zen Restaurant - wonderful food, excellent entertainment and fantastic views!

We do hope that your family will come visit us again sometime soon and try out our other restaurants (D'Onofrio's Italian Pizzeria and The Carriage House Grill) and perhaps the Spa.

We have been a Crane member for 3 years after meeting Jackie in December of 2008, and buying immediately. It was her enthusiasm for the property that captured our attention, and the friendly style in which she did business. Always welcoming, always friendly, always wanting us to know about ongoing developments and opportunities.

We have come to count on her for any questions about The Crane we might have. It is with she that we identify The Crane experience, and we look forward to seeing her on each trip.

Jackie, thanks for the initial introduction to this beautiful place, and thanks for continung to make our experience a special one.

Just returned from a 10 night stay at The Crane. This was our second visit and the hotel had definitely come on since our previous visit in 2008 with the Village now open giving us access to a well equipped gym, a much visited general store, a coffee shop and an additional dining option D'Onfrios.
We stayed in a One Bedroom Suite in Building 8. The room had great facilities - a well equipped kitchen, pleasant dining and living area, large bedroom and dressing area.
We had booked on a bed and breakfast basis - most days breakfast was served in L'Azure with a buffet on Saturdays, choosing from a menu on other days. Breakfast on Sunday when L'Azure hosts a gospel breakfast was served on the first Sunday at D'Onfrios and on the second Sunday at Zen - both started the breakfast service late and no information was provided in advance. Breakfast was an OK way to start the day - but I have enjoyed better at other hotels.
The Crane beach is amazing - and we never had a problem with sunbeds or umbrellas. Towels were late on some mornings - so we got into the routine of collecting a clean towel when leaving the beach the night before. Be warned - don't enter the sea wearing your shades - the waves can be brutal - and I saw at least one visitor a day return to the beach minus their shades!! That said we loved the sea - very exhilarating!
I have written separate reviews of the restaurants - we really enjoyed Zen and ate there twice - great sashmi! L'Azure was good for dinner just not great - and we ate a Donofrios twice - good pasta but service struggled when the restaurant was busy.
We rented a car for the 4 days via Guest Services - and were easily able to explore the island and eat at other restaurants - the best by a way being Waterside Dining at Dover Beach.
We had a great time - and I suspect will return (although perhaps not over thanksgiving weekend!) - my only concern will be if the beach and other facilities will cope if the hotel continues to expand.

Dear fionaemartin,

Thank you for posting this wonderful review. We are thrilled that you thoroughly enjoyed The Crane and its new amenities. The resort has certainly been growing steadily over the years. The Village now features a Fitness Centre, The General Store, D’Onofrio’s Pizzeria, The Village Café and a duty free emporium with several new additions scheduled to come on board.

We do apologise for the inconsistencies you experienced in breakfast. We however thank you for bringing this to our attention as the reasons for the late service have been investigated and addressed.

We are delighted that you enjoyed our restaurants overall and the beautiful Crane Beach, which is widely regarded as “one of the top 10 best beaches in the world.”

We are looking forward to your third visit!

I love Barbados. This time I wanted to try The Crane in St Philip!
Deluxe room was not very clean as you should expect for this resort rated . When I arrived, and even during my stay, amenities were missing and claimed several times, they never showed up. AC was dripping during all night of my arrival, living room was flooded it took an entire day (12 hours) to fix and to have the room "almost" in order. So far away from everything, or you rent a car and eat outside or you are stuck in the resort and you will experience the horrible cooking. Ingredients are bad, and the cooks are not good at all, very greasy, very unhealthy! You will love the beach though, a pink beach but hurry up go at 8 o clock in the moring not enough umbrella for all the guests, same thing for towels not enough.
I will never go back to The Crane I will go back to the Hilton or Sandy Lane!

Dear bananaplant,

We are disappointed that your stay did not meet your expectations. Your statement about your residence not being perfectly clean is an extremely odd complaint for The Crane and we can assure you that we have taken this anomaly very seriously. We also do apologise for the malfunctioning A/C unit in your room. We are in the final stage of implementing our long term solution, so that incidents such as these do not recur.

Our location on the rustic South-East coast of the island is definitely one that lends itself to pure tranquillity. It is not for every traveller, but the vast majority of our guests feel that the natural beauty, the ultra-spacious residences, many pools and wealth of amenities are an excellent trade-off.

I assure you that our chefs, Michelle Maloney from L’Azure and Thai Van Ly from Zen, are first rate and use only the highest quality ingredients in meal preparation. Our restaurants are all critically acclaimed, with Zen restaurant being Zagat rated “#1 in Barbados for Food” in 2009 and 2010, and we’re expecting another #1 rating in 2011.

With that being said, we do hope that you will give us another try if you are ever in need of an ultra-relaxing vacation, far away from the crowds.

Warm wishes,
