“What fantastic food! Wonderful service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2007

We had not planned any hotels on our 5 days through Wales, just wandered into towns looking for interesting places. This was the best yet. We stayed over an extra day because the food was so good. Traditional Welsh, they told us, but with a "continental" twist. We just know it was too good to leave. When we had to travel on to meet family, the staff did a "mapsearch" to get us from door to door in Glascow. Can't say enough good things about the Royal Sportsman. Hope to return some day.

My daughter, I and our dog Jake went for a long weekend at the Royal Sportsman Hotel in Pwllheli. It was a fabulous stay, the weather was on our side but what made the weekend was the Hotel. Very friendly staff who were, upbeat and very helpful. The rooms were immaculate and comfortable but best for us was the food. A fantastic menu of choices (especially at breakfast) and all wonderfully cooked - It was stunning!

It was a great change to be welcomed by a hotel with a child and a dog. There is also a beach 5 minutes from the Hotel called Borth y Gest. That was like stepping back in time. A beautiful beach with lots of little private coves, soft white sand and fantastic views. We ate well and gosh did we sleep well! Heartily recommended

Stayed here for two nights and used as a base for touring north west wales.

Couldn't get in to the car park at 5pm so we had to park in a back street but not a problem to us

Rooms were larger than a lot we've stayed in and breakfast was very good and freshly cooked to order

Didn't use the hotel restaurant in the evenings, but the menu looked ok - we ate at the little bistro opposite, very good food and reasonably priced

Stayed at Sportsman on night on a visit to Ffestiniog Railway. This is one of the little inns in a small town that can best be described as a delightful surprise. This is as close to a 5 star experience as I have ever had. The rooms are large and clean, the furnishings are carefully selected and the beds are supremely comfortable. The food is perfect , the service is sharp and attentive and the dining rooms (there are 3) are beautiful. The management is friendly and always mindful of your needs. I can't wait to visit here again and recommend this fine establishment without reservation.

A few positives first, to be fair - excellently laundered bed linen; continental breakfast good quality. It is obvious that some improvements have been made in recent times BUT standards of customer service and politeness need attention.

Negatives - owners dog urinating on grotty carpet at desk as we checked in; inedible fish main course returned to kitchen followed by message relayed from kitchen "there is nothing wrong with that fish". Next day - discussed food problem with owner who was defensive instead of apologetic. Rooms in annexe need attention. Overall poor value and would not recommend.

I have been coming to this Hotel for over 5 years, sometimes three times a year and have seen this hotel improve dramatically each time my wife and I visit.
We are alæways given a warm welcome by all staff and nothing is too much trouble. It is always full of families, other tourists and business guests. We often speak with other guests who come here because of the way they are looked after.
The food is rosette standard and breakfast now has 5 options-no other local establishment has so much to offer.
I have read previous reviews and I do not recognise the hotel they refere to nor do my friends who come at Easter.
This hotel is a little gem and would not stay anywhere else. The service is beyond expectations and the rooms would leave other hotels to shame in terms of cleanliness. The superior rooms are great

Spent a few days with my wife and our pet labrador called sam. Wonderful reception and learned that the owner also had a battered rescue dog called gelert who greeted customers onn their arrival.
We wanted to go to Portmeirion but dogs not allowed so the owner-Louis- looked afterv Sam all afternoon, taking him for a walk with his, feeding him and ensuring we vcould have a free afternoon.
Duruing the rest of the weekend, we had a peaceful and relaxing time. sam was allowed in the bar so we could eat in the evening with him.
Really looked after us and made us feel so at home
