“for the older generation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2014

booked through buy a gift .choose this hotel for its write up about its location and food , sadly let down a little bit. quality of food was good but not to our expectations as stated ,location is on a main road and not how we were led to believe. not next to a habour. we felt the room very tired and could do with updating. on the plus side all the staff were very helpful ,polite and hard working, also the hotel was very clean.overall a bit over priced but we still enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: our room was a large double/family

Obviously we are happy this reviewer chose to buy a voucher after reading something good somewhere about our location and food. Naturally we are disappointed they then felt let down.
If the food was good - and many others write that is brilliant, the best they've had - then we don't quite understand what this reviewers' expectations were?
Regarding the location - 131 High Street, Porthmadog - we are confused how they could have been led to believe it was next to a harbour? Obviously any address could be on a harbour, but all of our written information says we are close to the harbour, about 400 yards away.
Regarding the rooms, they were all re-decorated, though it is impossible to match everyone's tastes.
It is great the reviewer noticed the professionalism of our staff - which counts for much of a customer or guests' experience anywhere these days - and the hotel's general cleanliness, as the AA inspector agreed last year when giving our first-ever 5-star rating.
And so, perhaps, to the nub of this review - "a bit over-priced" - for these particular guests, whereas so many others say it is excellent value. But, like so many other guests, they did ultimately enjoy their stay. . .and we hope we might see them again.

In Porthmadog then I can recommend The Royal Sportsman Hotel, very helpful staff pristine dining room, and the Roast Lamb dinner was excellent, served with fresh vegetables and piping hot, followed up with a delicious white chocolate cheesecake, good choices on the menu, all very reasonably priced. Very good high standards.

Royal Sportsman Hotel is a dog friendly hotel; we have designated (easily accessed) rooms, some with outside space. Dogs are also welcome in the bar or patio garden.
We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed our food, thank you for the excellent rating and positive comment on staff. We hope to see you again.

We stayed under a Groupon deal, but had to upgrade to a larger room (at a supplement). That wasn't a great start, but when we arrived and checked in we were pleasantly surprised to have a very helpful and informative receptionist, who showered us with discount vouchers for the narrow guauge railway, Portmeirion and any meals we wanted in the hotel. He also gave good advice on how to make the most of the one full day we had in Porthmadog, and checked that we had parked OK. Excellent recovery..

The room was also very good; it was spacious, with a good shower, quality toiletries and a good selection of teas/coffees etc. There was a good guest folder in the room, providing a lot of information on local attractions and the hotel's services.

We ate one evening meal, which was well presented and very tasty. On reflection, we should have had this in the restaurant, rather than the bar, to have enjoyed it fully, but it was certainly a cut above the sort of pub meals that are depressingly familiar.

Our continental breakfast was an excellent buffet, with fresh fruit and a wide selection of local produce (inc home made jam and marmalade); others seemed to be enjoying some large cooked breakfasts as well. Service was swift and attentive, with buffet items being replenished quickly.

On balance, I'd happily stay here again, if I were in the area.

We are pleased to hear these guests would happily stay here again. With our winter voucher (e.g. Groupon) offers, those who bought and booked earliest for November, December and January had first choice (i.e. subject to availability) of our standard rooms at the offer price. When those small doubles/twins had gone, larger room upgrades were necessary in February/March.

Our reception team always do their utmost - if guests are equally receptive - to give advice and information (especially about our superb food) and our exclusive money-saving visitor attractions vouchers to help them get the maximum enjoyment and value from their stay.

Great to hear they also liked their (upgraded) room, complete with a comprehensive information folder - ideal, perhaps, for guests who prefer to read their Welcome Card and folder, and engage less with our receptionists?!!

Delighted these guests enjoyed our food - breakfast and dinner - especially noting its home-made quality and local origin over and above "depressingly familiar" (mass-produced, frozen, microwave-reheated?) pub meals served elsewhere. Again, our helpful receptionists explain at check-in that guests can choose from either/both of our excellent dinner menus whether they sit in the bar, restaurant, beautiful lounge, or even Orchard patio garden (April-October only).

Finally, we hope these guests - like so many others - will return to this lovely area and once again enjoy our hospitality: but remember, book early!

This was a superb deal in one of our favourite locations. The staff were very friendly, helpful and chatty. The restaurant was well set out and the food offered by both menus was superb. Parking facilities were perfect, off road and under cover. We were given excellent service by a male waiter (Petru??) We will definitely return.

Room Tip: We would have liked to stay in one of the courtyard rooms as from the outside, they looked very invi...

It is always a delight to accommodate and cater for such couples and to hear they will definitely return - perhaps to one of our courtyard double or family rooms later this summer, to use our exclusive money-off vouchers when even more local visitor attractions are open? They may also like - along with many other repeat guests/customers - to apply for our free-and-forever Privilege Loyalty Card which will save them 10% on all our superb bar/restaurant food (except on special Christmas & New Year menus). Added to our great-value DBB & BB room rates year-round, these discount incentives help to make our hotel - at the 'Gateway to Snowdonia & Llyn' - the favoured choice of truly discerning travellers! PS: Our waiter Petru is often mentioned by diners for his attentive but unobtrusive service - he was a North Wales Hospitality Apprentice of the Year in 2013!

We have just stayed at this hotel, accommodation fine, but because we had a dog with us had to take our meals in the bar. No roaring fire as advertised on the website, bar was cold and cheerless place to eat. We resorted to eating in our room which came at a price! When busy the services in the bar was not good. We cannot fault the staff for their service, but the owner for their insight into want the guest wants and expects for the prices charged. Don't think we would stay there again, simply because of cost which is very expensive for what you get!

We are the only hotel in the entire area which positively welcomes dogs and their owners in some of our rooms and to eat in the bar. As for roaring fires in the bar (and the lounge), we have had them from November through to the middle of March - when the weather thankfully improved dramatically and many regulars and guests were saying it was too hot! The price referred to for eating in the room is room service at just £2 per room. The bar was busy on the Saturday night when a group of 14 wisely decided to eat with us - but our bar manager is extremely experienced at making sure everyone is served efficiently. As for price, it is impossible to please all guests all of the time - but the vast majority of reviewers do rate us highly for value for money. We are sorry to hear they might choose to stay elsewhere in future - hopefully they will find somewhere which even accepts dogs?

We booked to stay here for two nights during a short weekend break. Porthmadog seems a little tired and the hotel stands on the High Street. Although we arrived early the welcome was warm. On booking we had already requested an upgrade for our room, which was quite spacious. The only downside would be the quality of the shower. The bed was a little on the firm side although it did tend to squeak quite loudly when one moved on it.
The amazing thing about this hotel is the quality of the food that is prepared and presented. We had already booked our meal in the Restaurant for the night of our arrival and anticipated eating out the other night. However, were we in for a surprise. As mentioned by a previous reviewer the Chef at this hotel is talented and there was a lot of choice on the menus. There was more than enough to eat and the quality is exceptional. So much so, that we ate in the hotel on the second evening. Breakfast were very good. All the staff, from the Reception Team, Bar staff and restaurant staff made us feel most welcome. We wouldn't hesitate to stay in this hotel again and if we were in the area, certainly take the opportunity to eat there. Well done to all and thanks for a great weekend away

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade. Whilst we didn't see any of the other rooms, the one we had was spacious an...
