“Family Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

Stayed here last weekend and it was great for us. Room 1 was huge, plenty of space for us and the little ones, and the bed was soooo comfy! It was spotlessly clean, as was all the hotel.
We enjoyed an afternoon in the sunny beer garden followed by a family dinner in the restaurant. The food and drink were great quality and the service was good. Full marks for breakfast the next morning too.
We really enjoyed our stay at the White Rose and would recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Room 1 is spacious and has a large king size bed.

The welcome at this hotel was miserable. Woman at reception ( turned out to be the owner) was not interested in welcoming us. I asked if we could have some glasses, I was told to look in the toilet and if there weren't any to use cups! I had to go back down as the toilet was equipped for 2 and there were three of us in the rrom. Says AA 4 star on wall. Absolutely not. More like a 2 star hotel. We had to book a time for dinner. This was 7pm. Food arrived one hour after ordering and not a busy restaurant. Food is average and certainly not 4 star.

Owner spent the evening sitting on her bar stool craning her neck through the bar door to stare at us in the bar.

Breakfast experience was shocking. Waitress rude to say the least. Very uncomfortable and embarrasing stay. We were supposed to stay 2 nights but cancelled the second night. Do not stay at this hotel

yes - the landlady can be a bit brusque which takes time to get used to but she was helpful when asked and the food and rooms were great. Could do with an upgrade of the tv which was outdated and didnt really work well but roooms were large, claen and comfortable. the bar and food were great and the staff all friendly. think the rooms are slightly overpriced but spent a lovely new years weekend in askrigg and would go again

Further to previous Reviews commenting on the negative attitude of the Landlady, I have to say the same applies to her husband/partner. No welcome whatsoever and seemed to resent having to leave his laptop to serve me a pint. Things only got worse when she made an appearance, but at least they are well-matched! Avoid this place if you are looking for traditional Yorkshire hospitality.

Yorkshire people are renowned for their straight talking. I've watched enough episodes of All Creatures Great and Small to know this. So I will do my own blunt appraisal of The White Rose. It is the very epitome of what is wrong with so many places in this industry. It has a very unfriendly landlady and a positively bizarre way of allocating tables for food. The food is very ordinary my fishcakes had very little fish and came in a bullet proof crumb. Horrible! There is no atmosphere in the place with its faded furnishings and bright lights. The landlady seems to think standing behind the bar is hard work. She did nothing all night but still complained to her regulars that she had 'been rushed off her feet'. I cannot understand how this establishment is still going, It is a cheap slipshod operation that has delusions of adequacy!
I will not be going again.

Stayed here so we could take part in the boots and beer festival at Hawes. We stayed in room 4, which was lovely and clean, nice ensuite bathroom, bit noisy during the day as next to the hotel laundry and so noise of tumble dryer etc. Every day the room was cleaned and we were given clean towels and fresh toiletries which was nice.Landlady was perfectly civil, not over friendly but I have no objection to this. We ate in the restaurant on the Thursday and I have to say the monk fish was one of the tastiest I have ever had. Perfect breakfast every day served with a smile.by young waitress. All in all a lovely relaxing break in great surroundings....

We visited the Dales from Ireland where we live and brought our 3 yo daughter with us. Although I told the lady I booked with on the phone that our daughter could share our double, when we got to the hotel, we were delighted to see they had put up a separate bed for her which our little girl thought was great! The room was very big, extremely clean and there were fresh towels every morning. We had the 3 nights for the price of 2 offer which is brilliant value ( I don't know why this offer isn't easier to find on the Yorkshire Tourist Board's website. The offers that are on there, don't offer anything like as much value). As someone mentioned, the TV didn't have too many channels but then we don't go to the Dales for the TV! We ate in the bar on two nights and the service was good with very tasty, good value food.
Couldn't recommend the hotel high enough. Have stayed there three times now and will definitely be back next summer!
