Had no big expectations with the price of this place but had a really lovely stay here with the family. Breakfast basic but did the job and would recommend this place as a decent place to stay for any family. excellent location and clean room

Stayed a night on business. Will definatley be back. Room lacked a seperate shower but bath was good with 4poster bed. Evening meal was cheap and plentiful. Left feeling very full and contented. Full english breakfast was equally nice and large.

My husband took me to this hotel for a birthday treat, it was wonderful, the setting with the historic old timbers was brilliant, our room was a four poster with a large en-suite overlooking the grounds, it was beautifully clean, tea/coffee making was provided and bottled water. We had dinner in the dining room and the service was second to none, nothing we asked for was too much trouble including having to go down to the wine cellar for the champagne we asked for twice!
Breakfast in the morning was more than we could ask for full Welsh local produce and in significant portions to sustain us all day. Highly recommend this lovely place. The staff and the owner are truly welcoming and were happy to do all they could to make our stay enjoyable.
Highly recommend a visit here.

Stayed here for a night recently for our anniversary. The room was really spacious but the décor was tired, with stained wallpaper that was bubbling up in places due to water and at least 6 different floral patterns dominating the room! With a bit of money spent to modernise the room it could be amazing as the hotel is in a lovely location. We were in room 6 and it must be just above the kitchens/bar because it was really noisy until all the kitchen equipment and bar bottles had been put away. We went out for the evening and had read on the website that they serve food until 9pm so got back at 8.20/8.25pm only to find a sign up saying the kitchen was closing at 8.30pm. Spoke to the owner who said that 2 others were just getting served and we could wait for ages but probably wouldn't get served anyway! Not a great way to treat your guests. So had to drive back into town for food. (we found a pub that had no problem accommodating us 5 minutes before their kitchen was due to close & the food was fab!) Breakfast the next morning was absolutely great so it's a shame we didn't get to eat here the night before.

Room Tip: Not room 6!

Stayed here for a night and couldn't fault it one bit. The owners really went the extra mile to make sure we had a pleasurable stay. From the very warm welcome to the Lovely clean room with a beautiful view, finished offwith a very generous and delicious breakfast. I really could fault it at all.

We had a 60th birthday celebration for my brother on August 17th and it was perfect. The dining room is beautifully appointed and nothing was too much trouble for Paul, Gerry and their staff. The table we had reserved for the 8 of us was beautifully set out and waiting for us when we arrived. There was a very good choice of menu (including vegetarian -- which was needed for 4 of us) and the main meals were piping hot -- and plenty of it.

Paul and Gerry have put a lot of work into the Rhydspence. We went there for a family gathering only a few weeks after they had taken over and the service was very good then. It is even better now and my brother had a wonderful evening with us all and it rounded off a perfect day for him.

When we had finished the meal, we went back into the cosy bar for a final natter and it was wonderful.

Whether you are looking for an intimate dinner for two or a family/friends gathering for a special occasion, this is the place to go to. Lovely location, lovely old traditional building and lovely food -- what more could you want?

Stayed for just one night but the welcome was very warm, the local cider and the food were great.
The bed was comfortable, the room was clean and breakfast would have fed a small army.

The hotel is a very old coaching house so don't expect level floors or straight doorways; all part of the charm.

We visited Hay for books and "The Weir" for a walk by the river. a brilliant short break.

We would certainly use the hotel again when in the area.
