My husband, myself and our mothers were travelling the UK for a month in May/June and had arranged to stay for 2 nights at Pebbles. My mother has always held a great fascination for lighthouses so I couldn't go past this place as it had themed bedrooms - Lighthouse and Boathouse decorated rooms, located directly on the beach in Devon! Can you ask for much more?
We arrived on what was our 4th day in England, bringing fantastic sunny weather with us! (apparently April had been unseasonably cold and rainy) We were warmly greeted by Humphrey and Rosemary and were immediately made welcome. Humphrey assisted Lloyd up with our copious amounts of luggage - made easier with the use of the Lift accessible to the Lighthouse room and we oohed and ahhed over the rooms - wandering and taking photos first thing!
We were then invited to partake of tea and coffee in the conservatory dining area and were provided with an amazing choice of home made chocolate or fruit cake! I knew from this moment on that this place was special! :)
The rooms were very very nicely presented. Large and spacious with plenty of room for extra pieces of luggage so you didn't trip over anything. The balcony's off each room interconnected but were separated by a curtain - still very private. The view was breathtaking with comfy chairs positioned to enjoy all that there was on offer! (including crazy people swimming in the freezing cold ocean!)
The tea and coffee making facilities were good with little extras - home made style cookies. The Lighthouse room had an ensuite with a shower positioned over a bath - not modern but very clean and spacious and all you need. The Boathouse had a bathroom with separate shower across the hall outside the room so if you are "frequent user " you might say during the evening hours, you might want to consider the lighthouse room or another with an ensuite attached.
Breakfast was superb each morning at the large communal table! The sideboard contained amazing home made stewed fruits and cereals etc.. Coffee was provided in individual metal carafes so three for us coffee drinkers! very decadent! I had the salmon and scrambled eggs - so nicely cooked and as I am a devout hater of marmalade I think I should add at this point that I was made to try it here and I cant believe I actually loved it! Simply shocking really so if you can, partake of this culinary delight when you eat breakfast here - made by Rosemary of course!
We went for long walks in the town of Buddleigh Salterton and along the coastal path next to the pebble beach and to nearby Bicton Gardens. Enjoyed ourselves immensely and would definitely put this place on the "must return to" list!
A must mention a wonderful place to eat is the "Cosy Tea Pot cafe" - fantastic little place with wonderful and varied selections of home made cakes and other main meal options - such as ploughman's lunches the size of which I have never seen!! Please support the young couple running this place - they deserve to succeed!
And additionally the Feathers pub - The menu seemed extensively delicious - we all chose fish dishes and they were simply to die for - tasted like the fish had only been caught an hour before it landed on our plates! Awesome. And huge servings! Definitely choose here!
Thank you Rosemary and Humphrey for a wonderful and memorable start to our trip!
