“One night stay in this beautiful Parador”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

On our way to South of Spain we stayed one night in this Parador. Nicely located it is a nice place To explore the little city of Hondarribia. You can use the elevator and walk around the Harbor. Although there is an airport close by you don't experience any notice of it. The room are a little bit small and you should ask for a room with sea view.
Although they don't serve dinner and lunch, the can recommend nice restaurants in the area, we have chosen for Sebastian, an excellent Michelin star restaurant
Breakfast served in the patio inside the castle is excellent and the surrounding impressive.
Just one caution for our American friends there is NO air conditioning.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

We found the Parador a great experience in an excellent location. A short walk to town with an elevator if you did not want to walk up or down a hill. It is close to the airport that serves San Sebastian so the cab ride was reasonable and went right to the door. We did not have a car so it wasn't an issue. But there was a very convenient bus in town to San Sebastian and we took a 10 minute cab ride to the train/bus station in Irun to take a day trip to Bilbao. You do not need a car at all. I thought the hotel was beautiful and the staff so nice and helpful. There were plenty of convenient restaurants so it wasn't an issue to not have a full restaurant at the hotel. Well worth the price of staying in this historical fortress.

Room Tip: We had a nice room facing the water away from the courtyard so more quiet.

After reading other reviews, I knew this might be challenging to find and it definitely was. Our GPS (a Garmin that came with our EuropCar rental) did not do the trick. We learned from hotel staff that GPS systems rarely work due to a change in address. I can't give actual directions, but we came in from the direction of San Sebastian (to the west) and there is a roundabout where the GPS tells you to turn, but you have to continue on through it. You will come to a light and have to make a sharp left, which takes you up into the "medieval section". Continue up a hill with only one lane (there may even be a car coming in the other direction) where a metal cylinder blocks the road. Just to the right is a gate - ring the bell and they will open the gate for you to park.

Once we finally got to the hotel, we could not have been more charmed. The rooms were not fancy, but were very nice. The common areas were beautiful and we enjoyed drinks on the terrace (a lovely view) and breakfast on the patio. The area immediately around the parador is cobblestone streets and a quaint place to take a stroll. Much of the area seems residential, so you have to take the elevator down to street level to do any shopping.

The hotel does not have air conditioning, but this wasn't a problem for us. In spite of a very warm day (mid-80s), it was comfortable at night. Some rooms have ceiling fans as well. We slept with the windows open and if you are a light sleeper, the noise could be a problem. While falling asleep, I heard traffic, dogs barking and planes landing. It wasn't incredibly loud, but it is something to be aware of. We had the breakfast buffet, which was not too bad. As far as our Spain buffets, it probably ranks #2 out of 5 (the buffets in Spain have a lot of cured meats, cheeses, breads and cold egg frittatas).

The staff was very friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Our 14 and 15 year old daughters also thought it was fantastic. So, in spite of some difficulties, I would absolutely go back to this hotel. You won't find many like it.

I recently spent 3 nights in this beautiful fortress. The rooms are all nicely sized and comfortable and have either a harbor or courtyard view. I recommend harbor as the courtyard can get quite noisy if sleeping with the window open. The back patio for cocktails can't be beat for the beautiful view and push-button bar service. What a nice place to unwind after a busy day of exploring the area. The parador is located on a quaint cobblestone square with ample food and beverages available. Are those cannonball holes in the side of the building? We forgot to ask.

Room Tip: Inside rooms can be noisy due to courtyard sounds echoing upon the stone walls.

Parador de Hondarribia is a fine hotel located in the old city of Hondarribia. Despite its excellent location the hotel has some drawbacks. Rooms are small, and parking is difficult and expensive if the hotel lot is used. Furthermore, the parking lot is at a distance from the lobby and up a long flight of steps and no help if offered to get luggage to reception. The hotel is also quite noisy. We moved after one night to a superior hotel close by in Hondarribia and we were not disappointed. Breakfast was only average and not included in the room price.

We have stayed at this Parador several times and it never disappoints. It is clean and very comfortable. Set in a medieval walled town, it is just beautiful. Although the Parador doesn't have a restaurant there are several just a stones throw away. We always go to the bar/restaurant opposite which s pretty good. Obviously this is not a cheap stay. The steps up from the car park are the only negative. We took friends who had never been there before and they loved it too. We thought breakfast was pretty good. Walk round the old part of town, take the lift at the back of the hotel down to the modern town and have a good explore. It is well worth the visit.

Room Tip: You have views over looking the bay which is magnificent or rooms over looking the inner courtyard w...

We stayed in Hondarribia in late May and can attest to the very rainy weather detailed in other recent reviews. We also agree that the luggage trek from the lower level parking lot to the lobby is no picnic...especially in a downpour. However, we found this Parador to be one of our favorites out of the five at which we stayed. The reception staff were informative and pleasant. Our breakfast buffet was delicious. Our room was just the right size with a modern bathroom and a view to die for. Even on a cloudy day, the panorama of the lower town, the seaside, and the tiled roofs of the French homes across the bay was beautiful. Yes, the bar only serves snacks, but we simply had drinks in the bar until the rain slowed, then hurried into town to eat at one of the extraordinary local restaurants. For eating (and shopping) Hondarribia is hard to beat. Please don't let some of these more negative reviews dissuade you from staying here. The four of us all agreed that we would rather spend a rainy day at the Parador de Hondarribia than a sunny day almost anywhere else.

Room Tip: Go for the ones with the view of the bay and France beyond.
