Go to Azores and not visit is a shame, so please do, very interesting process and also the Cozido that is cooked inside of the earth is very tasty. Try!! Nice waters and say the experts that they are therapeutic!! have fun!

“A magical experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

Absolutely loved the opportunity to swim under a warm waterfall and in the hot pool below, surrounded by lush vegetation. The water is rusty pink from the iron content. There are changing rooms, though not that many, and the hot pool is not large so can feel a little crowded. Very relaxing and so different.

“Perfect alternative for poor or average) weather”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Since the weather was not perfect for hiking, we decided to visit the Caldeira Velha. After we've seen the pictures of the waterfall on the plane to Sao Miguel, it was clear: that is a 'must see'.
The former reviews mentioned the reconstruction of the site. This now is finished, there are facilities like changing rooms, showers and toilets as well as a small visitor center. The valley and the pools remain unchanged.
There are two options to go into the water: The pool below the small waterfall and a 2nd pool near the visitor center. The (bigger) pool at the waterfall cantains cooler water, I would estimate it around 25°C. Here, you will not stay too long! ;-)
The smaller pool below contains the same water, but heated by further furmaroles. Here the temperature is much higher, maybe 30°C (or even higher). You can not swim in that pool, but it is perfectly relaxing! But be prepared: when you (like we) stay for half an hour or more, you will be at least as tired as after a sauna visit!
You now have to pay for the visit. But this is just EUR 2 (plus tax), so not a reason not to visit. You should come early. At 10AM on a sunday, we were the first and only who had a bath. As we left at around 11AM, there were several people bathing. Together with the crowd in the small pool, you will not have the same perfect 'jungle feeling' like we!

“Don't bring your soap...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Great spot! Try to avoid peak times and enjoy the wonderful, warm waters.
Forest, waterfalls and warm water - we visited in the rain, which seemed to add a certain mystique. 37 deg C is like sharing a bath outdoors!. There are WCs and changing facilities.

“Bring an old swimsuit!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

This park used to be free to enter, but now you are required to pay an entrance fee per person. With that being said, hopefully the funds will allow the groundskeepers to spruce the place up a bit. Not a very relaxing location as it's so overcrowded! No charm, just another tourist stop.
